@Theplatymaster thanks I guess I was just wondering if flow matters in a planted tank, the plants and substrate would give enough filtration for the fish I plan on keeping but i was wondering if having good flow really matters? and if I get mulm in spots cause of low flow will that cause algae problems? also what substrate would you recommend for a tank that I want to have going for many years? the plants I want to use are lots of crypts and swords but also some fast growing stems, i want a substrate that will let the heavy root feeders get really big and not starve out but last many years unlike some aquasoils. what would you do?

How much flow do planted tanks need?
Jacob Hill-Legion Aquatics posted a topic in General Discussion
How much flow do planted tanks need? I've seen many different ways of doing planted tanks and I was wondering how much flow/circulation do planted tanks actually need? I see lots of people who have planted tanks with big canister filters adding tons of flow and the have success but I also see people with very little flow like a sponge filter or sometimes just an airstone like Ocean Aquarium San Francisco or The Secret History Living in Your Aquarium what has your experience been? what works better for you? I want to create a low maintenance natural aquarium but I don't know what kind of filtration would be good in this situation? -
Lighting recommendations?
Jacob Hill-Legion Aquatics replied to bryanisag's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
I agree the co op lights are amazing! my plants have gone crazy after switching to it and the build quality is great and I love how easy the set up is. I'm probably gonna be only using co op lights for future planted tanks. -
Live food with fish?
Jacob Hill-Legion Aquatics replied to Jacob Hill-Legion Aquatics's topic in Fish Breeding
Yeah the idea would be to have a culture of cyclops or something in the tank. im not 100% sure but I think saltwater guys do this kind of thing in reef tanks -
I was wondering Is it possible to keep a live food with fish in the tank so the fish have a constant food supply without the fish eating all of them and destroying the population? if so what live foods would work?

Ammonia after rescape
Jacob Hill-Legion Aquatics replied to Jacob Hill-Legion Aquatics's topic in General Discussion
It’s brand new substrate with aquarium co-op root tabs that are deeply buried. I'm also not dosing any fertilizer -
I recently rescaped my tank and reused a couple plants and reused the hob filter but everything else is new. After testing my water I have ammonia, I’m changing water every day and dosing seachem stability. My ammonia is slowly going down and my fish haven’t been acting weird or anything, they are still eating and even showing breeding activity. Should I just continue what I’m doing or is there something else that could help? Water parameters: Ph:7.6 Ammonia: somewhere between 0.5 and 0.50 Nitrite:0.25 Nitrate:0

Cold water fish?

I haven’t but I’ll probably just bring fish in for the winter like a usually do but it would be cool if I could leave something outside all year.- 7 replies

I was wondering if there is any fish that can go all year in Calgary Alberta? The winter temps easily get as cold as -20c (-4f) but usually somewhere in between-20c and -30c (-22f) sometimes it could even get colder every once in a while. If I insulated the pond and added a top during the winter is there any fish that would do fine in such extreme temperatures?

Whats your favorite filter?
Jacob Hill-Legion Aquatics replied to Jacob Hill-Legion Aquatics's topic in General Discussion
I’ve heard undergravel filters work well and I’ll probably try one someday. They just seem really easy and like they last forever -
I've had a stiphodon goby in my tank for over a year and i pretty much don't feed it and its belly is nice and round. i think it just eats biofilm and left over food from my other fish but I wanna get more of them cause I love watching them hop around the tank and stick to the glass, rocks and plants. what should I feed them? I'm probably gonna get like 2-3 more for my 10 gallon is this a good number or how many do you think I should get?
