  1. Yeah I thought that so I switched it with a brand new one I had in storage and they still are acting weird and the old one looked perfectly normal so I’m pretty sure that’s not it I kinda thought that might be it but I removed a ton of my hornwort and they are still acting weird and I’m running a powerful air pump on my sponge filter with an airstone so I don’t think I have an oxygen or flow problem.
  2. I'm pretty new to guppies, Ive only had them a like 6 weeks and I was wondering if its normal for them to not move much? because at the beginning they were super active and the male was chasing the females a ton and they were breeding a lot but now they aren't really that active, nothing has changed, the water parameters, the temp, the food, and everything else in the tank is the same what could it be? and its like this throughout the entire day even when the lights been on for hours, the only time they are active is when I'm doing a water change but then like 30 minutes after I'm done they go back to not moving much. I have 1 male 3 females and a bunch of fry but they make doesn’t seem interested in breeding anymore.
  3. Wow! Those look pretty cool, are they aggressive?
  4. I know this is more of a community fish forum but I was wondering if anyone had any small African cichlids that they would recommend for a 65 gallon aquarium? I just got the tank and I plan on getting some. The dimensions are (36L, 18W, 24H)
  5. Im 6’2 so it’s not a problem but it’s still pretty high and definitely will be harder to maintain than my other tanks @Ninjoma yeah I’m glad I went with the 65 because more gallons is always better and it allows me to have more levels of fish, taller plants and taller fish (if I ever wanted to try angelfish)
  6. I just picked up a 65 gallon aquarium, I was planning on getting a 40 gallon but this one was the same dimensions for the length and width but 8 inches taller, has anyone had one of these tanks? Did you like it?
  7. I got some Caribsea substrate that’s meant for reef tanks and I’m going to use it for a lake tanganyika tank and it says it’s coated in beneficial bacteria, would that same bacteria survive in a freshwater environment? Or will it die?
  8. I was trying to think of some cool stocking ideas for my 40g breeder and I came across a video of a lake Tanganyika community tank and it look’s awesome so I was wondering would this work for stocking without any problems? 4 julidochromis transcriptus, 4 neolamprologus leleupi, 4 neolamprologus brichardi and 6 Neolamprologus brevis. would this work? Would it not? Would you change the numbers? Let me know your thoughts/experiences with lake Tanganyika cichlids and stocking a community. thanks, (julidochromis transcriptus) (neolamprologus leleupi) (neolamprologus brichardi) (Neolamprologus brevis)
  9. @Galabar@nabokovfan87 great recommendations but I should have specified im interested in more "oddball" type fish for a 40g tank.
  10. I was wondering is there and fish that could go in a tank 40g or less that act like monster fish but are much smaller? because I really like seeing the aggressive eating that the monster fish do but I don't have space or money right now for a big tank. any recommendations?
  11. Yes I agree because if a heater ever malfunctions it will probably be killing a lot of money worth of plants and fish so that 30$ is worth it
  12. Congrats on the breeding! Hopefully you get fry to grow up but if you don’t at least you’ll know what not to do next time. Good luck
  13. I want to try breeding shrimp but I don't have any experience with shrimp so I was hoping someone on here could give me some advice from there own experience breeding shrimp? I was wondering what plants should I get? is just java moss fine? do they need any other structure or is just plants fine? I have repashy, algae wafers and flake foods that I feed my other fish would that be fine for shrimp? I want to do it in a 10g, Its already running, it has water, gravel, a sponge filter and a ton of algae all on the walls and a couple fish in it helping it stay cycled. My tap water is 7.6ph, 12gh, 7kh and the tanks temperature is 60f because it doesn't have a lid yet
  14. I bought a used 75 gallon that came with 2 yoyo loaches and I loved them! they were so fun and playful but I feel like they would have done better if I got like 4 more because they were still pretty skittish
  15. That’s what I’ve noticed since keeping them😄 yeah I haven’t had any of it get left to rot away even my stiphodon goby likes it and he normally just eats algae, biofilm and other micro things
  16. I don’t think I’ll use the fry food right now because it cost a lot to ship and I would prefer to order some when I do a big order so I get free shipping, I don’t really need anything right now so I’ll wait to try it when I need more stuff like a new light. I can get good foods right near me from my lfs. Do you think crushing up the xtreme flakes I got will be fine?
  17. I made a big journal post and I accidentally pressed hide under moderation actions, how do I undhide it because I really don't want to loose that post that took a really long time to make. PLEASE HELP! 🙏
  18. After taking down my first planted tank I decided with this one I wanted it to be easier to take care of and more focused on taking care/ enjoying my fish. So I decided to go low tech instead of high tech like my last tank and I've gotta say I prefer lowtech much more, it just seems more natural and I feel more engaged with tank and that I notice every little change making me feel like I understand my tank and the ecosystem that it is much more. The fish I decided to go with are guppies because I wanted something that I could easily breed and I hear so many people say good things about them. Now I understand why because I think they are my new favorite fish! They are just really cute and colorful and the are so much fun to watch and feed plus they breed easily, that's a win, win, win, win, win. This is the tank, its a 1 month old 10 gallon with crypts, anubias and hornwort. I'm using the new co op light and its growing everything really well! I still am not done with how I want it to look because I want to get a black background and I want the plants to fill in more. The plants are growing really well and surprisingly fast (for slow growers) in my opinion but I do have some hair algae. I've Dialed the lights down, removed as much manually and started dosing some liquid fertilizer and that has made it almost completely stop growing but I still do have some so I'll probably get some amano shrimp to eat it. As for inhabitants I picked up 2 male and 4 female guppies from a local guy for 2$ a piece, He also gave me a sandwich bag full of hornwort for 5$ so I would say that's a pretty good deal for fish that have been raised in my tap water and are guaranteed to be disease free. I also have a goby that I've had for a long time living with them and some pest snails. I've really come to appreciate the "pest" snails in this tank because Ive really noticed how well they eat the converting crypt leaves and algae on the glass. THEY HAD BABIES! after only a week of having these guppies they had fry! I'm really excited about this and if you have any tips on raising them I'd really appreciate it. I'll probably update this as the tank changes but if you have and tips or recommendations id love to hear them also one question for everybody, should I get a couple more gobies so my goby has some company? because I'm pretty sure they are fry safe. Also if you have any questions about the tank please leave them below. 🙂
  19. The other day I saw one of my guppies get stuck in the hair algae even though it was such a tiny amount so ill definitely get some amano shrimp to eat it up ASAP I reduced the light down quiet a bit and made the photoperiod 6 hours instead of 8 also I added some hornwort to help consume extra nutrients.
  20. Ive tried changing my light to less light and ive added more plants and it has made the green hair algae slow down in growth a ton! all my plants are growing well, but even when there is one tiny piece of hair algae it keeps coming back, slowly but still comes back. what do I do to get rid of it? or should I just leave it and just let nature do its thing? because Ive heard people like @Cory say algae is good to have in your tank. Ive done as much manual removal as possible but I cant get all of it. (btw the tank does have guppies so I don't know if they will eat it or not)
  21. Ive used window film before but this tank is already set up and I don't want to move it at all so the pvc will be the easiest to slide behind the tank.
  22. would this work as a background? its thin pvc sheeting, Its easy to cut. would the pvc have any problems if some water got on it like how acrylic can bow?
