  1. You should be testing your water before doing anything and seeing where your nitrates are.
  2. If thats the case the only thing listed there that would need the extra nutrients in the soil would be the sword and you could just heavy load it with root tabs before you leave the rest will be getting most of the nutrients from the water column so it would just be put X amount of squirts of easy green per week.
  3. Honestly it really boils down to how much work you want to do if you want to make it easier on yourself than just the tap water (assuming you have tested your phosphate levels?) that being said you could then do a phosphate absorbing media or filter pads and try purigen for the other unwanted materials you talked about.
  4. The simple answer is more water changes but if you dont want to do that the only other thing I can suggest is putting more of a cap on the stratum. Crushed coral might be an option also.
  5. Honestly my best first question he would be what plants are you planning on keeping is a better place to start rather than starting with substrate.
  6. Go to Amazon and search for Landen they will probably have what you are looking for. Also Waterbox box aquariums .com
  7. If that is aqua soil I see and you are doing infrequent water changes and still adding buffer in between pretty sure thats what your issue is and explains your GH rising.
  8. It feels like you have something else going on with the tank I'm also not familiar with the salty shrimp product I personally would use equilibrium that all being said can you post pictures of the tank? I think that would help.
  9. Eco would never properly cap a dirt layer unless you put at least a couple of inches on top and at that point there would probably be not much benefit from the dirt itself. From my own experience I will never do dirt again its just way too much of a mess both to prepare and if you ever break the tank down its yet another mess my suggestion would be to get some aqua soil like Fluval Stratum and mix that with the eco and root tabs and you should be all set.
  10. As suggested either turn down the intensity on the light or go for a shorter duration maybe down to 6 hours. You don't have a ton of fast growing plants in there so the plants are getting out competed by the algae and don't stop dosing that will just kill your plants and make it worse. One other suggestion would be to take a toothbrush or anything similar you can use to get as much algae off of the leaves of some of those plants or trim off any bad ones.
  11. I would have to ask what is your goal? Is it to carpet or just having some thrive? If its to just have some thrive here and there you will need a pretty bright light, keep doing the root tabs and add a bit of liquid fertilizer.
  12. That seems a bit borderline to me at least for long term. If you have a good lid, light and some kind of electrical filtration should raise it up to a more (in my opinion) acceptable range.
  13. Inside glass I use the coop branded magic erasers outside glass I wont ever using anything besides the Fritz I absolutely love that stuff.
  14. In my opinion the light is fine for what you are growing judging from your pic everything seems to be doing well and adding crypts will not require more light so I wouldnt worry about that.
  15. This. I had the same or similar I used them just for this purpose It would have to be less than a 5 gallon for me to even think about putting a tank on one MAYBE!
  16. Some really good suggestions here but I would not recommend Platys for those size tanks because one of two things will happen....all the babies will be eaten or you will get overrun very quickly! I personally would do Endlers and Cherry shrimp.
  17. Yeah that would be why you didnt have any luck with Monte Carlo or S Repens and would advise against hair grass. My personal recommendation would be crypt lucens or crypt parva or both! Also I would invest in some root tabs if at all possible.
  18. Would be best to provide more info: Lighting Substrate CO2 etc.
  19. Honestly since I've moved and setting things back up from scratch I really really thought about just going back old school with some scotch tape and just a black background lol! Just easier to deal with, swap out or if the glass gets scratched etc. would make things much easier just obviously not quite as nice aesthetically.
  20. While I really hate to see some species of fish for sale at LFS and think they just shouldnt be sold I've tried to adjust my view to be more that an ethically run store should advise the customer on that fish before selling it but the bigger problem is not just with fish but with most pets my thoughts are they are purchased without doing the proper research of which I am also guilty of doing in the past.
  21. This has been a big issue for me moving back to Michigan from Ohio so I know exactly what you mean and I hate it lol! It doesn't even need to be "Aquascaping" proper but these places barely have any hardscape whatsoever it really boggles my mind. And don't get me wrong it wasnt like that in Ohio but all the LFS at least had a good choice of different rocks and wood and really dislike having to order online sight unseen.
  22. @Mynameisnobody Awesome! Yeah I havent seen them on black I'll have to take a look around and see what it does to their colors I've only seen them on white I think.
  23. Please share when you get your setup I'd love to see it I'm very interested in keeping some of these!
