  1. I am feeding live daphnia. They swim for quite awhile in the planted tank with the fish chasing after them. The extreme nano pellets sink after a few minutes unless caught up in the floating plants. The frozen brine shrimp seem to float about in the filter current fine not sure if they are too big for the fry.
  2. I alternate feeding extreme nano pellets, flake and daphnia for my danios and cheery barbs. The bottom feeders get wafers and repashy at least once a week.
  3. I have a fish tank corner in my basement office. All of my frequently used equipment (nets, pruning tools, scrapers) and food is under my tanks in cloth bins or hanging from magnetic hooks on the metal tank stands. The 5 gallon is my daphnia & snail tank. All the rarely used stuff is in a bin on a shelf next to the python and water change buckets in my utility room.
  4. You forget what you have running after awhile. At least until something breaks. 😄
  5. I could not sync my account until I disabled all privacy applications (privacy badger, uBlock) for aquarium co-op site. Everything worked right after that.
  6. If you spawn a clutch or two of mystery snail eggs you will have hundreds of snails. I have a large number of yellow and ivory snails in a ten galleon tank that have grown relatively slowly. The few I picked out for my other tanks exploded in growth when moved. I feed the small tank rather aggressively with a high calcium repashy mix, use crushed coral and wonder shells (my tap is rock hard) but obviously there are some limiting factors. I did cull quite a few for another fish keeper who has pea puffers. Probably will cull or sell more soon.
  7. If anything happens I will update this thread. It is still floating at the moment...
  8. Manny, I tossed mine in a jar with some substrate to see what if anything happens.
  9. I was wondering if it was the dwarf lily but I could not find any pictures of it propagating. I have had a fly in my other tank (no lid). Fish ignored him so I ended that incursion. I don't eat sunflower seeds so I am feeling pretty safe on that one. 🙂
  10. I am the only one who cleans the tank and I have not changed anything in this tank in months. I was removing the lid to maintain the tank and I saw this floating. Tank has a dwarf lilly, sword, crypts, java fern, vals and Pogostemon Stellatus. This is a seed pod of some sort but what?
  11. My less than a year old aquaclear stopped working the other week after a water change. When pulling it off the tank to inspect the filter I accidentally dropped it onto the tank lid and it restarted. I'm thinking I might get another aquaclear HOB spare just in case. I have a UPS (spare from a former work PC setup) so restarts after a power outage should be an non issue.
  12. I currently rinse my filters in the tank water after I gravel vacuum as the sink is up a flight of stairs. After I pop the filter back in the tank, I toss the water in the yard. Saves me time though I probably could use the extra exercise.
  13. Might be nice for a wet and dry tank. Fairly deep for fish but plenty of room for a platform well under the lip.
  14. Just to wrap this effort up... The sick danio did not recover. Gill flukes or gill disease he never did start eating again. One full course of Paracleanse and Maracyn had no obvious effect. Tried epson salt baths for about a week in an effort to address the bloating and bladder control issue. Rest of the fish in the main tank seem fine so hopefully that stays the same. @Colu Thanks for the suggestions.
  15. My Sterbai are fearless and hang out in the front of the tank. They are non stop eaters of everything. I break up the algae wafers and snello into small portions and scatter around so the snails and my cowardly amano shrimp get some. My danios and cherry barbs mostly hide in the plants and behind my large rock unless it's feeding time.
  16. The tent would help to keep your tanks free from any air-born dust from your work area.
  17. Same experience here. First month the vals mostly melted. Second month the started growing. Third month they spanned the entire top of the tank ( before I started trimming). I do have a substrate, fertilize and use root tabs. I think that gives the plant more to work with.
  18. The main tank seems fine at this point but I will keep feeding until I completely use the one package of paracleanse. My sick Danio unfortunately is not improving. The red gill has not gotten larger but has not improved either. His swimming bladder is still impacted as he swirls all around. I am planning on a course of maracyn at this point to see if that helps.
  19. I have black eco-complete (topped with gravel) in my planted 29 gal. The PH spiked to 8.5 (tap is 7.2) at first but I was cycling the tank with plants only so I didn't mind. Growth was excellent in the first month by which time PH had dropped to my tap water level. Three months in my PH range is 6.8 to 6.4 (KH range of 80-40) depending on how many days it's been since my last water change. I just started to use root tabs monthly to keep up the growth for my root feeders. Maybe the the black gravel top layer helps but I have not had issues planting stem plants in the tank. Scarlet temple is not thriving but my sword, vals and Pogostemon Stellatus are growing well after some initial melting.
  20. I just found a clutch of eggs on my tank Wednesday. Not sure how many snails I want in the tank so I am thinking of letting nature take over and see how many make it.
  21. Thanks. Now that I read up on gill flukes it would seem likely. His other gill is fine at the moment and from what little I can see of the other danios they seem fine. I can easily medicate him in my 10g QT tank with paracleanse. Would you be inclined to feed the main tank with medicated food or treat the other tank proactively?
  22. I seem to have cursed myself when I mentioned all my animals were doing fine in another thread. My dither fish have stopped dithering and are all hiding behind my large rock where the plants are the densest. When I poked them out of hiding I noticed one of them moves extremely slow and is resting on nearby plant leaves. I have never noticed that behavior before with regard to the Danios. No signs of disease or obvious damage though his gills appear to be slightly red. He is definitely not well, hiding and the others appear to be hanging around him. I did move some rocks in the tank the day before but at the time the only fish that kept getting in the way were the corys. Fairly minimal soil disturbance but there was some. Water parameters seem fine. Corys, cherry barbs, hillstream loaches, other danios and snails seem fine so far. Shrimp seem as active and skitish as normal. PH is from 6.4 to 7, KH ranges from 40 to 80. NO2 and ammonia are 0, NO3 ranges from 25-50, GH is 300. Temp ranges from 73-76 degrees F. Any suggestions? *Edit* He swam slowly along the top of the planted tank so I was able to net him out into my QT plant only tank. He is definitely not swimming well and seems to be mostly resting.
  23. No CO2. Substrate is eco-complete under gravel. Easy Green 3x week, Easy Carbon weekly, Easy Iron 1 every two weeks and flourish potassium 1 month, No significant change in plant mass lately. I tend to prune ever other week when I change water. The tank was running fairly consistently from May through July with my Valisnaria and dwarf lilly having filled out late July when I added root tabs for them. No significant algae issue other than some minor hair algae on the Vals.
  24. I recently noticed in my 29 gal planted tank the PH was dropping from 7 to 6.4 and my KH was dropping from 80 to 40 in 7-10 days. The prior month it had been fairly stable with PH of 7.2-7.0 and KH of 80 (climbed to 120 when I was on vacation & no water change). NO2 is 0, NO3 is 25-50, GH is 300. Tap water is 300 GH, 7.2 PH and 80 KH. The fish don't seem to be in stress but I was confused as to why all of a sudden this was happening. I have been keeping a spreadsheet of various aquarium activities by date since I started the tank in May. Looking back it seems my PH and KH have been dropping since I started feeding a home made 'snello' for my snails and shrimp. I generally feed the "snello" once a week after a water change with the exception of last week where I made a mistake and feed twice (PH hit 6.4, KH 40). This jello mixture has quite a bit of Calcium Carbonate in it which I am assuming is lowering the KH. I am thinking I will change the feeding schedule to be two days before the gravel vacume/water change to limit the time the remnants are in the tank. That make sense or am I still missing the culprit?
