  1. ill take a shot, aquasoil is a type of substrate. some folks use that or other soil type substrates, and some of us use gravel, they can both work well with plants. i would go ahead and use a dechlorinator with your plants. plants can definately handle chlorine, and ammonia better than fish but no point in stressing the plants out. many of us, myself included have adopted aquarium co-op's easy green fertilizers. they seem to work well, and as the name implies are easy to use.
  2. tons of people will answer questions for you. the basics for a planted tank are exactly like a non planted tank, just add plants. you do get into how much light, fertilizers etc. make sure to hit up the plant section of the forum or even general, and ask away. the other forum areas tend to get more action than this section does.
  3. nerites are great, dont get big, dont repopulate, but they do leave eggs in the tank that some may find an eyesore.
  4. have no fear, whatever you might do with a fish tank, right or wrong, someone here has done it before. we've all had stumbles along the way.
  5. less is more, especially with a newer not matured tank. for future reference, if this was to happen in the future again, i would suggest remove the wood along with a small water change. wait a few more days then do another small water change, etc. the newer the tank, and the smaller the tank=the less you can get away with when changing things.
  6. very hard to say exactly what colors would pop out, as you would really have to go back several generations to see the previous color variations, then take a wild guess at it. best way to find out, is let them breed, and see what pops up.
  7. a few degrees one way or the other during a water change isnt a big deal, but a big temp change will make them shut down, and stress's them out quickly. if you(or anyone) refills with just cold water, best bet to let the water acclimate in buckets first.
  8. 1. guppies oh look a squirrel..................😜
  9. i stick them in close to the roots, but not under the plant. especially with vals, they seem to not like being disturbed. for actually placing them, i just shove them down into the substrate with my fingers. as long as you get them down a little bit, they'll stay down. if you just get them under the surface, they will probably float up or at least be visible when the capsule turns to goo.
  10. fairly heavily planted, and want a big school.... id go with a big pile of ember tetras.
  11. prepared food for homosapiens makes me think c-rations, lrrps, and mre's.😈
  12. 2 months, ill bet its about ready to take off. its a fussy plant. put it in and it wont do anything for far too long, then bang its growing and spreading.
  13. have you seen some of the names, and spelling people give their kids??!!!😲
  14. being a sailor, many years ago i could cuss and swear in about 8 different languages, but talking fish is waaay over my head!😎
  15. you do not need to keep freeze dried food frozen.
  16. for me, id ask why did it die? was it old age, was it diseased/sickly. if it wasnt sickly, i myself dont have a problem with other fish eating it, as its kind of how nature works.
  17. they probably arent eating the sword. remove manually the ones you can, get some assassin snails to help control the population. reduce feeding (overfeeding makes snail numbers increase directly proportionally to amount of extra food), and as a last resort there are chemical treatments to kill them off.
  18. buckets are your friend. with the 20, and worried about mixing up the substrate, id drain the water and move it as it. dont mess with the dirt. a 20 with substrate is still manageable to move.
  19. thats not a lot of tank for adult sized bluegills. ive not bred them, but have kept them , and fished them. the short course on what do any of the sunfish prefer for breeding. they like a sandy bottom, with good weed cover. they will dig their own beds and move weeds out of the way. id say its not impossible, but will likely be very difficult to get them to spawn in a 75g tank.
  20. exact stand isnt super critical, main things being it is strong enough to support the weight, has a flat top, and wont bend or sag over time. 2x4's, blocks and boards, welded stand, etc. whatever tickles your fancy.
  21. its parasitic, and the only known cure is to have your hands removed!
  22. 5 gallon bucket, or rubbermaid tub , whatever fits the size. pour hot water in and let it soak.
