  1. So I lost my very favorite goldfish, Buddy, the other day and I have decided to downsize my hobby to a singular tank. I've drained Buddy's former tank (mostly, give or take the last .25" of water beneath the sand substrate) and I am trying to come up with a clever way of clearing it out before I sell. Previously, I would just scoop out old sand/substrate but I've been having back issues lately and can't really stand the thought of lifting wet, heavy sand out of the 75 gallon tank over and over. Especially since my roommate took our tall stool. Has anyone tried to use a shop vac for something like this? If I was strong enough, I'd just take the whole thing outside and dump it... but its a 75g with atleast 30 pounds of wet sand in the bottom.... not liftable. Any ideas?
  2. If there hasn’t been any issues then I wouldn’t worry about it… but knowing there was weird algae would have me cleaning it really well. If you are nervous about contaminants or something coming over from the old tank I’d just give it a really good rinse and replace all the media and start from scratch. Safest option is always to clean everything really well. I know in past experience I buy new tubing because they're more difficult to clean.
  3. So I recently bought two cheap fantail goldfish for my 75g that was sitting empty. They both had interesting colors that I hadn’t seen on a fantail before so I pulled the trigger. The dark one I am confident is a fantail— since he looks just like my OG goldfish in my other tank. The white one is who I’m doubting. I thought his tail fin was just clamped up in the store and figured it was just stress but its been a couple weeks and the closer I’m looking the closer it looks like a single tail fin. Really odd since he was in a tank w/ all the other fantails and his body shape looks like a fantail to me too. He swims fine but does swim SLIGHTLY “crooked”. What is this imposter?
  4. To aerate the water / surface agitation for my goldfish. My canister is too powerful to aim at the surface, so I aim it at the back wall to soften the blow and use the bubbles for extra O2 and surface agitation. I see a noticeable difference in the fish's behavior when I have it vs don't
  5. ABOVE THE WATER LINE. Maybe that was also a contributing factor.... moving the new ones now... lol.
  6. Pretty much exactly that! Its *meant* to keep water from moving toward/into your airpump.. but had it not disconnected for me it would have saved me in this instance as well. Highly recommend you pick some up!
  7. Yeah, Ill have to look extra close and make sure I get barbed ones in future. Just bizarre because this tank has been running as is for over a year. Crazy how things like this just ✨ happen ✨
  8. The airline I was using was a cheaper black one, felt very malleable… I’m thinking that was a contributing factor as well.
  9. Yeah I’m thankful, but also annoyed. Tank is full and no leaks from the tank.. got one of the canisters up and running but unfortunately the larger of the two canisters is completely trashed. I have a 307 laying around but it isn’t nearly as big as this sunsun 704b.. Im moving the media over and praying.
  10. Yeah I had a check valve, but thats where the airline tubing slipped off. Maybe the airline was just old or poor quality or something.. I’ll definitely be replacing. So bizarre. I’m refilling now with my fingers crossed its not a silicone leak. Thankfully my goldfish are OK, but Im hoping to get the original tank up and running. The other tank I threw them into has only been running two days so it isn’t ideal for them.
  11. Title says it all, but I can’t figure out how it happened? I was woken up by the sound of my canister filters grinding from running dry and when I walked in my two goldfish were swimming in about 4” of water in their 75 gallon tank. Quickly unplugged everything and threw some towels down and started investigating. There is no water in the stand, where the canisters sit, there is no water on the side closest to the door so no leaks on that side, and I don’t see any cracks or anything unusual on the glass… The only weird thing is that the airline tubing I have that is attached to an airstone came loose from the check valve… and there was some water in the airline.. is THAT what caused this? If it had been syphoning water like that all night? UPDATE: Was 100% the airline tubing syphoning water out after it detached from the check valve, shoutout to the folks below who told me to get a barbed check valve and to zip tie the connections... everything is locked down now. I have refilled the tank and there are 0 leaks on the tank or the canisters. I did lose my largest canister filter because it was running dry for so long and burnt out, bummer. I had a fluval 307 on hand which is smaller, but will get the job done. My #1 favorite goldfish is ALIVE so I am super thankful. Every towel I own is currently in the washer, the floor is dry, and all is well. 😀
  12. This may seem like an odd question but in my current living situation space is limited and I am having a hard time finding a way to store my 50ft python water changer without getting a bunch of bends and kinks. Usually if I run warm water through it, I can wrap it up nice and neat but the water has to be pretty warm and none of my tanks require anything outside of cold or room temp. I also heard that running hot water through it is not good. How do you guys store it? How do you keep it wrapped up without it getting all bent up?
  13. Came back here to amend my statement of my sunsuns being fine, lol. Overall they have been great for me for a little over a year.. but right now I am getting a ton of noise in my 704B.. I've ordered a new impeller and hope this will solve but thought I would bring it up here incase you were still considering. When I researched it, it seems many people have been having this noise issue after a year of use. (Though, they've been able to solve) Also someone mentioned that there won't be many plants in a goldfish tank--mostly true. I can do plants if I guard the base with small rocks so they don't dig, but pothos and floating plants are a great option too.
  14. ammonia 0 nitrites 0 nitrates 20 (easy green for a couple plants I have in there), very well established healthy tank with 0 issues thus far. I do have rocks in there.. but I have a hard time believing he knocked into them and that is the cause considering he is the only one who has this issue and it is in both eyes.
