  1. Thank you Teenage fish! Your adorable! I’ve made a few changes and I’ll update soon. There is a lot to know and we learn by our mistakes. I’m certainly making some. Lol. So much encouragement on this site. 😘
  2. Thank you everyone for your patience and knowledge. I’m learning to quote and tag. Never been on a forum before. 😳🤗
  3. Thank you! Boy did I need to hear that. It’s funny I never use pesticides on my garden and try hard to companion plant. But aquariums scare me as I read all the issues and fluctuations that happen. I’ll head to the store tomorrow and get some new friends! 😊
  4. I’m learning a lot. It’s serious business this aquascaping! I got a water testing kit but it started badly. The PH reagent was faulty. Twice! The aquarium supply store was baffled. I don’t really trust the kit at all now. It was reading 5.5. Even for my tap water. I am planning on removing the Cuba as it won’t do well without Co2. All other plants should be fine. Brandy you are right I need to add some clean up crew. I may be moving in January so worried about adding more inhabitants and moving the tank.
  5. Thank you everyone. I know some critters are not harmful, just surprised how quickly things went wild. My work is about to go back to 14 hour+ days. I have a manual Co2. Think it will be best to go low tech and remove it. Switch out the shrimp and get a betta. Nitrates etc. Are normal. It’s a Fluval flora and the light is very powerful! I dialed it back substantially to control algae, plants seem fine. I’m new to this and got scared things were going wrong!
  6. Brought home some blue velvet shrimp and tiger snails. Within a week I’ve got pond snails, hydra, copepods and seed shrimp. It’s a new 14.5 gallon aquarium that I cycled for 6 weeks. Lots of plants, spiderwood and dragon stone. Water parameters were normal. Suddenly I’ve got lots of hair algae as well... What to do? I feel like starting over is an option? Should I remove plants and treat with peroxide and replant in a bleached tank? Ugh. Not sure how to salvage with so many pests.
  7. Took my tap and tank water with new PH bottle back to aquarium store. API tested my tank at 6.8. Again they tested their water with my Fluval PH and was reading at 5.5. Everyone is stumped. 4 of the 6 shrimp I put in yesterday are dead. What on earth is going on? Ugh!
  8. It had an expiration date of 2024. I replaced it and still got the same results. Weird hey? 😐
  9. New Fluval test kit has PH reading 5.5-6! As did my tap water and bottled water. I exchanged it for a new one today thinking it was faulty. Aquarium store also tested their water and got same results as mine. Tried again. Same results. Local city water tests at 7.2 to 7.8. My research says chlorine can throw off results? What is going on with this reagent? Any ideas? First pic is first test. Second pic is new kit with aquarium water on left and tap water on right.
  10. Thank you B28ans. Yours is gorgeous and so clear! I need more background plants like yours. What fish are you planning?
  11. Thank you Bill. I’m all about plants but they can be complex like relationships! Once I get some fish in there I’ll chill out. Or maybe not. Aquascaping is amazing. I had no idea. Glad for this forum, so much knowledge out there. Happy growing Bill.
  12. Hello everyone. This is my first aquarium. I love plants so this seemed an obvious progression of my obsession. Haha! There is so much to know, so I’ve been studying this forum. The knowledge here is epic and very helpful. I’ll lay out what I have set up and some issues I’m encountering. Of course I would delight in any insight you all may have. Thank you! Fluval Flora 14.5 gallon tank- Fluval nano light - Co2 45g kit - Aqua Clear power filter - Fluval M50 heater Substrate- Tropica soil powder - Nutrafin plant gro fertilizer - Plants- Hemianthus Cuba -Littorella - Eriocaulon cinereum - Microsorum windelov - Alternathera - Vesicularia Christmas - Ludwigia Repens Rubin- Dragon stone - Spider wood I did an emersive planting for the first 10 days. Seemed to go well except for the Ludwigia which I delayed until I filled ‘er up. -First week - a bit of melting which I expected. Then a cloudiness on the 7th day. 50% water change -Second week - Started to see a tiny bit of algae. Clear goo blobs appearing on tree bark. (Boiled for tannin removal) Read they can be fungus or from tree sugars/sap. Scraped off goo. Clouding bloom gone. Pruned Ludwigia and Moss. 40% water change. Trying to figure out best placement for Co2 and heater. Need longer hose for Co2! - Third week - Realized I had the lights way to strong! Used the pre-program ‘Plants’. Then I discovered Bentley Pascoe! Thank you Sir I now have your Day SIM Red Late as my Pro setting. The goo seems to be subsiding. But the algae is appearing on the sand. 😞 Some dark spots appearing on Windelov and Ludwigia. 😳 Questions- Should I introduce some shrimp at this point? Would help the inevitable new tank algae? I plan on having a Betta and perhaps some Neon Tetra also. Maybe a snail. Is it best to establish one at a time? Water test kit on its way and don’t want to add until I know water is safe. I live in Vancouver, Canada and the water is a neutral PH. What kind of fertilizer do you recommend? Using the Free sample Size Nutrafin. Should I get separate micro and macro nutrients? I’ll stop now. It’s a lot. Haha Thank you all!
