  1. Lumens and light temps aren’t really the factors that you need to look for when growing plants. It’s PAR that grows plants and algae. Any light no matter the color/temp will have PAR values. You grew algae because you have enough PAR with three plant lights and no plants to compete with algae for nutrients. You can remove the algae manually and raise your light to reduce PAR. If raising the light isn’t an option, you can also dim the lights if possible or use floating plants.
  2. I did watch this video when I got my grindal worms. I might try this when I finish all of my coco coir. I got so much for $7 and I do like the more natural substrate for them. Maybe I’ll get tired of dealing with it eventually but it’ll do for now. What brand do you feed? I feed mine omega one. I just checked the original culture and it looks like I didn’t take some out to start a new culture. There’s still so much worms in there
  3. I was able to get this photo. I also posted on apistogramma groups on Facebook and Reddit. The general consensus is female but the seller is insisting that it’s a juvie male
  4. Mine exploded in population with fish food. I was shocked at how many I had that’s why I split the culture. I did the same thing you did when I started the new culture in a bigger container and I still had so much left from the original. Haven’t tried feeding cat food or other types to compare but I’m really shocked at how fast they multiplied with fish food.
  5. I got a small culture of grindal worms 02/09 and was able to grow that culture. I was able to split the culture into 4 because of how much the population has exploded from the original one. This is my first time doing a live food culture and I’m glad that I was able to keep them alive and thriving. Currently feeding them fish food that I don’t use cause I’m a fish food hoarder 🫣 Would I need to eventually replace the substrate of the original culture? I noticed that the coco coir is starting to look a bit different already from when I first received them. I have also taken out some of the coco coir from the original to seed the other cultures and replaced it with some new coco coir. Will that help to increase the life of that culture? I read that cultures usually last a month and then they start crashing. What’s the best way to harvest them? I just cut up the lid from one of my betta cups and poked some holes in it but wanted to see if there’s a better way.
  6. Looks like stag horn algae. What color is it? It’s usually caused by unstable co2 levels, ammonia spike or other tank instabilities that can stress out the plants. I usually spray it with hydrogen peroxide during a water change. You can also do spot treatment if you don’t wanna do a water change. Just make sure to have the filters off for a few minutes. Once the algae turns pink that means it’s dead. If you’re planning to remove them manually, take out the whole leaf instead of pulling the algae from the leaf so it doesn’t spread.
  7. Alright! Gonna try that and do some cleaning today. Thank you so much 🫡
  8. Our floor is actually this weird material that’s probably not weird and I just don’t know what it’s called. Some parts have been damaged by water but we’ve been able to prevent that. This is what it looks like with the damage. We have a few small spots but nothing too noticeable. Would the hydrogen peroxide still be safe to use for this type of floor? I have the hydrogen peroxide but not in a spray bottle. Can I just use that and put some in a spray bottle?
  9. Is there a disinfectant spray that’s safe to use around tanks? I like to do some general cleaning at least once a month and was wondering if there’s a spray to clean the floor. I can also use a bucket and mop to be safer but just wanted to check. Sometimes my roommate cleans too and he doesn’t like using a bucket. He just wants to spray the floor and then mop.
  10. I’m planning to buy a male apisto agassizii for my lone female but the ones I’ve seen in my lfs are only sold in pairs and they won’t separate unless there are some deaths. I found a seller on Reddit that’s local. He said it’s a male juvie agassizii and sent me this photo only He said they’re hard to capture in photos so he just asked me to come and checkout the fish. I don’t really wanna travel specially if there’s a chance that it’s not agassizii. Was wondering if anyone can help ID this apisto and confirm if it’s male. Would appreciate the help.
  11. Thanks! Their staple is north fin pellets, NLS pellets and Aqueon nutrinsect pellets. I also rotate some spirulina flakes, fluval bug bites flakes (color enhancing and spirulina), sera nip o tabs, repashy, Vibra Bites, live black worms and grindal worms, and a mixture of frozen food (krill, brine, spirulina brine, mysis, daphnia) I don’t have a schedule on what I feed but they get pellets 3-4x/wk and everything else gets rotated in randomly. Sometimes I fast them during water change day and sometimes I don’t.
  12. I’d rather do Pseudomugil Luminatus or Gertrudae for that size tank. Forktails get a bit bigger, a bit territorial and are pigs. The Luminatus or Gertrude aren’t as voracious when it comes to feeding time so the CPD’s will still be able to get food. I currently have all three rainbows but the forktails are in the bigger tank.
  13. Are you gonna be in both areas? Some stores you can check out: SD area: Pet Zone SD (the only place I know in San Diego but you can use yelp for other stores) LA area: CK fish world Nature Aquarium (my personal favorite) Pet Town Golden Guppy Allans Pet Center (They have two locations) Age of Aquariums 405 Tropical Fish Strictly Fish Carson Tropical Fish Tikis Tropical Fish Bobs Tropical Fish Nautilus Tokyo Aquarium Sunset Pet and Supplies Pet Supreme Nolans Aquarium Aquarium City
  14. I currently have 5 pairs in a 40 breeder 😂 They do chase but not to the point of hurting other fish. I’d keep a pair or two in a 29g easily as long as there’s enough space for them to claim territories. All their tankmates are nano fish with the exception of the pearly gouramis, which usually stay on top so they barely interact. I found that once they establish a pecking order, they don’t harass the others as much. It also helps that I have 10 of them so the mild aggression is still spread out. If you just want to keep one I suggest getting a male because they look amazing once full grown. Some photos of my males and with other females.
  15. I just checked today and they’re still moving. I understand the chlorine could’ve evaporated already but the chloramines are still there
  16. From Malaysian trumpet snails? I’ve read that certain snails do carry diseases but I’ve never experienced it with pest snails. I wasn’t trying to quarantine them. I accidentally left them in non de chlorinated tap water and they’re still alive. Actually even until today they’re still moving.
  17. Not literally but I just found out they’re insanely hardy. I rinsed some small rocks in tap water and a few babies fell in the cup during the rinse. I forgot about them for a few days and when I checked they were still alive. I thought I might have used tank water to rinse the rocks but I was 99% sure I used tap. So I changed the water and I’m 100% sure that it’s tap this time. It’s been 4 days and the snails are still alive. I live in the city so our tap definitely has chlorine and chloramines. Just surprised that these snails can handle that.
  18. Yeah I know. That’s literally what I said? 🤷🏻‍♂️ I posted the photo of my Bolivian rams for comparison in response to the person that said they were Bolivian rams. I’ve kept both and I know the difference.
  19. i currently have my setup like this and it works. Plus if you decided to remove the mesh bags they won’t mix with the sand. I just removed a few bags on my tank and it came out clean
  20. My fish act the same way when I introduce new food. After a few days they were swarming it. Maybe try it for a few more days and then let us know if there’s any improvement.
  21. Rotala ammania bonsai (other roatala have small leaves too but the bonsai is the smallest of all the species I kept) , pearlweed, DHG, montecarlo, AR mini, Mayaca Fluviatilis, micro sword, crypt parva, hydrocotyle tripartita mini, ludwigia arcuata Not sure what your setup is but these are some of the plants I kept that stay small or have small leaves
  22. So today is day 2 but I won’t get to observe them until I get home from work later around 6pm. If I see that there are no cysts I’ll do a 30% water change and then do another dose. Does that mean I’ll skip the dosing on day 3?
  23. They’re actual GBR. They do look kinda different and they actually resemble the look of the wild caught blue rams I had before. If they are closer to wild caught then that might explain why they were able to handle the ammonia in the tank. I read somewhere before that wild caught rams are hardier. Here are some Bolivian rams for comparison
  24. Alright then I’ll let the ich-x work for now since I just dosed this morning. Bottle did say that I have to do a water change every time I add ich-x so that will be happening tomorrow after work. I’ll keep observing and update this thread if there’s anything urgent. Thank you for responding so quickly ☺️👍🏻
  25. I already dosed the 3 teaspoons tho. Should I do a quick water change or just let it be? If I stick to ich-x for the fungus what should my dosing schedule be?
