  1. Welcome! Any special type of pleco or just a bristle nose?
  2. That sounds like the 29 probably has some nutrient excess that the diatoms use and when the plant was moved the diatoms starved. Here's a handy chart someone on here shared a while back:
  3. Welcome! Does you new 10 gallon have sand substrate? I've read that sand tends to cause a the to be a lot of silicates in the water initially which can cause diatoms
  4. Found "pennywort drink" at an Asian market Makes me wonder how many aquarium plants are used as food elsewhere
  5. The fish room must expand to meet the needs of the growing fish room!
  6. Lol I cleaned it out, walked back to the fish rack, set it down on my chair so I could adjust things, and then sat down
  7. The anubias next to the output is going nuts and pushing against the lid (and may not be getting enough nitrogen): The roots are taking off Pretty soon the cap on the back area may not be able to open soon
  8. I finally set up my ziss hatchery after my old diy 2 liter bottle hatchery got sat on accidentally. It seems to be good at hatching them but getting the shrimp out is tricky. I may try finding a way to attach an air line to the out spout. I'm pretty sure the Aphyosemion Ocellatum are spawning again. Her lip is beat up again... I may move her to the tank below the fry to let her recover and then move the male over with a mop to see if I can collect some eggs and hatch out another batch. The fry are all still chugging along and growing nicely. Finally got a lid for the shellies. They are doing really well and surprisingly the nitrates and still really low despite not really having any plants.
  9. I guess if I was paying attention I would have seen that in the title... Based on what you've said the only thing that you've done "wrong" is maybe overfeeding but with those parameters that wouldn't have killed them in 2 days It could have been stress from moving to a new tank. If you floated the bags and let them come to the same temperature before asking them to the tank then maybe there was someone going on with them before you got them. Hopefully the rest stabilize and you don't have any more losses
  10. That's an ambitious build! That will be interesting to see how the aquaponics setup goes
  11. I've heard that the flow on those marine land portrait tanks is pretty strong. Are you planning on slowing the flow somehow? I guess I'm assuming pea puffers like low flow but I'm not sure.
  12. Looks like it's coming along nicely Are you intentionally keeping the water level lower for some reason?
  13. Looks like you're off to a pretty solid start. That a nice setup you have there. Can you share a little more detail like: What size is the tank? What fish do you have? 20 pellets sounds a bit excessive but the parameters you shared look ok. It could be shock from moving or it could be over feeding.
  14. "I'll get you my pretty and your little fish too" Sorry... I just thought it was a funny typo Plants can be part of the nitrogen cycle. If your plants are growing and your but seeing ammonia or nitrates then your tank is probably established enough to start adding fish.
  15. This guy has a pretty good video where he breaks down most of the things you'll see in an aquarium:
  16. Yep it has the full setup: airstone, heater, light (from adjacent tank)
  17. That does really reduce the list Do you have a lid? Soft, slightly acidic water with lots of plants sounds perfect for killifish. Aphyosemion Australe may be a good bet. If you could lower the temp a bit you could do Aphyosemion Striatum. But you would need a lid
  18. Has anyone had this happen? Recently I've started hatching bring shrimp again and I'm getting a lot that hatch but just fall to the bottom. Even while the hatchery was running it has a pile at the bottom. Aquarium co-op eggs in a ziss hatchery. ~2T salt in 2L water. The light is just in for the picture. Adult fish still eat them up but fry are less drawn to them because they aren't moving. There are still some in there swimming around but it seems like the majority is on the bottom
  19. So I'm not sure if the frozen daphnia you but at the store will work or if it's too broken up. I've used the eggs that you mentioned and had a moina culture going. Ironically, it was their fairly shrimp eggs though. The fairly shrimp hatched, died off, and then there were moina and they lasted a while. I've also caught daphnia from a lake. I keep them in a ~15 gallon container in the back yard. A few weeks ago it froze solid and they all died. Now they are starting to come back. I was told that they can lay dormant eggs that can survive freezing.
  20. In 6 gallons I would stick with one species of fish and then maybe some shrimp or snails. I've had luck keeping pairs of killifish in them. That said I've also messed up or gotten lazy about water changes and had them get sick. I would avoid getting a pair of live bearers. That tank will get over populated fast
  21. Got she holey rock and a background for the shellies Still no light so a lot of glare... Old man sparky got moved in with the flag fish. He's about 15 months old now and still going strong: He seems happy with the extra space. Everything guy a water change and during the water change I noticed counted 6 fry in the Fundulopanchax Gresensi tank:
  22. Unless you personally raised it and separated it as a juvenile before they became mature it's not a question of "is my you pregnant?" it's "how pregnant is my guppy?"
  23. Aphyosemion Australe, Aphyosemion striatum, or Aphyosemion Gabunense They all love things in the cooler side and are amazing looking fish. You will need a lid with no gaps.
  24. Yesterday was "the home show" for the GSAS. I got to meet @Beardedbillygoat1975 in person and my tanks were a part of the show. I didn't win any awards or anything but it was still fun and it was cool to see some fish friends win some awards. My wife came with me this time. The first item in the auction was a set of 6 multis. They started bidding out at $4 and no one bid on them (in stores around here they sell for $15 each). My wife could tell that I was really tempted so she told me to go for it. It wasn't until the drive home that she learned it meant we would need a separate tank. Looking in the bag there was only one fish actually visible. When we got them home I put him and the shell in a bucket as a temporary holding place, still only the one fish. I pulled the shell out to make sure none were still hiding in it. There must have been a mistake and only one fish was bagged. As I was dialing the LFS to see if they would take him I told my wife "I'll check the bucket one more time, just in case they magically appear" They magically appeared... The tank is a work in progress. The next big thing will be to get them more shells. Currently it's just one one they came with, one from the ocean, and a few coconut huts to hold them over.
  25. Yet another benefit of being part of a fish club. You get really nerdy and dedicated people like the gsas club president who just decides to go and do a deep dive into how two identical looking heaters are different
