Sandra the fish rookie
So I have seen pictures of tanks with Pothos in their tank filters, or just outside the tank. What is everyone's take on this? Have any of you done it? I have SO many of these plants.. I often trim them and put the cuttings in a mason jar. But wondering if they would be a good aquarium plant to. Would love to hear what people have done. If they like it, or if its a pain to maintain etc.. I have a Aqueon quiet flow 10 hang on the back filter (see below). ps. Excuse the filter media, I have a carbon filter in my extra slot to rid the tank of deworming medication.. Happy Friday Eve everyone!
darkG
I have not yet decided how to go about this, but for now I have a Pothos cutting and two other Epipremnum offshoots and a Streptocarpus. But not mounted or fixed. I don't expect it to be hard to maintain, if it gets out out control I suppose they can be thrown out and replaced just like that. I will probably add spider plants too. I have a foam background that I consider mounting some onto (planting into), but I also will probably make some kind of hooks to hang on the rim. For now, they are doing well 🙂
Will Billy
I was wondering about that too. I found this blog article on aquarium co op website about it. https://www.aquariumcoop.com/blogs/aquarium/pothos i see that you want to place it on the opposite side of the motor so that roots dont stop up the impeller. My question is should you remove sponge filter media? Or just let the roots grow into the sponge filter media is ok?
Sandra the fish rookie
@Will Billy That is a really good question. Once my carbon filter is out, I will have some room where the filter media is.
Sandra the fish rookie
Another thought... If people put these on their hang on back filters, do they just live without the cover? Is anyone worried about dust ect getting into the filter? does that matter? If I put a Pothos on/in my hang on back I will not be able to put the cover back on it. MDoc
15 minutes ago, Sandra the fish rookie said: If people put these on their hang on back filters, do they just live without the cover? I tried adding pothos right into the filter, but couldn't bear not to have the cover on it. I tried weaving the roots down in the cracks, but that didn't work very well, and ended up being a pain. Eventually I decided just to kind of wedge the plant between the side of the filter and the lid. It works decently, and the roots get down into the tank nicely. Only downsides are that you need to be careful if you ever have to remove the lid. Your pothos will slip down into the tank or fall out behind depending on the balance. Overall, it's worked for me, but everyone's going to be different. Overall, I love having the pothos. I don't know how much nitrates it's eaten up for me personally (woe is my testing), but I love the look of the plants coming out of the top of the tank.
Sandra the fish rookie
@MDoc WOW.. that looks so nice. I am total green thumb, but a rookie to fish keeping. I am so afraid to something to harm the fish or tank (more than I already have 😞). I really love the look!
MDoc
I've also heard of people using airline tubing suction cups on the stems to keep the plant in place... but I just haven't gotten around to trying that yet. 😅
Sandra the fish rookie
OH WAIT.. What about using something a bit wider.. like an old syphon vac hose? wonder if it would be a bit wider, but pretty stable.. and getting heater suction cups to hold it in place???? hmmmm that way it would be easier to take out when cleaning the tank...
stephk
There is something I found on Etsy called Poth-o-carry. It is a little plastic holder with a hook to hang on aquarium that you just set the pothos on. I was thinking of trying it. 1
Koi
I have pothos and a Japanese peace lily sitting on top of my tank. The only real problem I have is I haven't found a permanent spot to hang the pothos so I do take off a few leaves here and there during maintenance.
MickS77
I had this sad looking Pothos at my desk at work. I brought it home and put a cutting of it in each of my fishroom tanks. Its taken off quite well and is even more filled in now.
Will Billy
This thread has me tempted to snip a piece off my wife's hanging pothos plant in our kitchen and try it out. Ive also heard of people putting lucky bamboo in their hob filters. Hmm...🤔
Brandy
Doo eeet!! Easiest way to scavenge nitrate...There was a cool old mom and pop hippie run LFS in oregon in the 90s that had all their tanks rigged on a filtration system that had the water hydroponically growing various houseplants in PVC troughs at the back of every rack. I miss that place soooo much. At the time I could barely believe it was worth it--now I KNOW it saved them tons in terms of water changes. 2
Aubrey
I've never put it in a hob, but I have just let it hang off the side of the tank. The roots can get pretty crazy. I had to trim them more than the vine. This cutting had a nice curl in it that allowed for it to "clamp" on to the side of the bowl.
Sandra the fish rookie
@stephkI ordered those Poth o Cary things off Etsy. I will let you know how they work 🙂 1

Jungle Fan
MD Fish Tanks did a tutorial on how he placed Pothos and a Monstera around his Amazon tank. he describes adding a shelf for the Monstera fairly at the beginnin. The installation of the Pothos is described starting around 53:05 into the video. Hope this helps. 2
Will Billy
With my wife’s permission she let me take a snip off her pothos plant. Using inspiration from @Sandra the fish rookie post above. I used a small piece of pvc pipe and an old heater tube suction cup to hydroponically plant the pothos. Here are pictures below.
Sandra the fish rookie
@Will Billy that's AWSOME!!! What a perfect idea!! and I have seen where on Amazon you can get heater suction cups too.. which is cool! Love this idea!
Koi
@Will Billy the pvc is really clever i need to do something like that so I can get my mini bar clamp back haha. In case you didn't know, cause I can't see how long of a cutting of a cutting you use, those little nodal bumps are where the roots come out of.
Will Billy
Yes, i cut it right past the nodal. The stem only hangs down about an inch and a half. No doubt i will need to keep up with water top offs until the roots come in to hang further down.
Jungle Fan
Silicone gear ties would work as well to hold the plant roots and to shape them into a hook for the tank rim, and they are available in a bunch of colors to blend in with your tank's background. CT_
I've been thinking about pothos too! it seems like a really great way to absorb nitrogen fast. ironically i started getting plants to help fish, but now i like the plants, so i just started ferts to add more nitrogen! maybe the solution is to buy more fish so i can get more plants.
