Crack in 10 gal. Can I still use it?

Recommended Posts

So there’s a small crack in my 10 gallon, that’s completely covered by the silicone. I’ve only just put water on it now for 5 minutes so idk if it’ll actually leak or not. But do you think this tank would be ok to use? I’d probably just use it for a quarantine tank now so that way it’s not constantly set up but idk if that would be ok even or if it’d be likely to break, thanks for any advice

So…. my _advice_ is NO. Replace the tank. 10-gal aquariums won’t break the bank, especially if you can get onto a dollar-per-gallon sale.

HOWEVER, my _example_ is not consistent. I have three or more tanks worse cracked than that that we’ve used for years. I’ll upload photos in a little bit.

Look at it this way. With the crack there is an increased risk of a leak. What will be lost, both in the tank and outside the tank, if/when it leaks? Even if the forum was 100% telling you it is all safe, the risk is all yours. None of us will be there helping clean up the mess or helping you repair the damages. How much risk do you want to take?

I agree ☝️ completely. Best thing to do is replace. My kid shattered a 5.5 gal tank a couple years ago, destroyed furniture… very bad. Every gallon makes things worse.

BUT

I’m living on the edge with these three tanks 😳😬

On the edge is right!  Whew!  It makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck just looking at these! Legit started to get goosebumps and not in a good way!  Had to tell myself, “It’s not my tank.”  I have a chip on my back up 10 gallon that only gets used in emergencies.  It doesn’t go into the seal or anything, but it still gives me trepidation to use it.  @Fish Folk I never knew you were such a risk taker, dancing with the devil like that.  😈 😝 😆 😂 🤣

I would agree with these guys if your a millionaire or don’t have a piece of glass to use. If you do have the glass remove that side and replace the whole side. If you can’t get a 10 gal right away it will probably hold until you can a new one if you are worried about a leack set the tank in a bid like this or if you have a bid that is about the same size as the tank you move everything in the bin. I have bids that are used permanently as angelfish breeders. In the pic is a bid a 10 gallon will fit in I got this one on Amazon I think or Alibaba.com but it fits ove the top of the ten.gal.  I can use the broken 10 gallon to put hermit crabs inACB9A29C-8718-46FB-983A-D39628A687E0.jpeg.901959d86d2fa5e97ffa1573aee1e8a2.jpeg

That crack is low enough, you might consider coating the outside with something like flex seal. Then put a supporting frame around the lower portion of the glass. If you use deep substrate you won't even miss anything.

You could make that side the back, and cover it all with black flex seal for the extra waterproofing.

The risk is all yours.
