  1. Yes, I have read that epsom salt is used for internal parasites that cause bloating. It's a laxative. But for swelling of organs from bacteria I don't think it helps. There is a youtube video of a goldfish, I don't remember the specifics but he opens up a goldfish with dropsy. Look for "the fish doctor" That publication is interesting. Seems salt is good overall for stressed fish. I don't know what it would do for dropsy though??
  2. I would imagine because it doesn't work to cure it, but as to why it would make it worse there is probably info out there but not just about dropsy. I mean why too much salt would be bad for the fish or possibly make internal infections worse. Hmm, don't know but one could look for studies. But at the same time that sentence that salt hurts is probably just wrong.
  3. try this https://aquariumscience.org/index.php/11-4-dropsy/
  4. unfortunately API can say and advertise anything they want. Take that how you wish. I wouldn't use it. Their data sheet shows less than 1% (<1%) nitrosomonas eutropha and nitrobacter winogradski. To me this means could be zero. It also shows greater than 60% water (>60%) , this could mean 100% water. https://apifishcare.com/pdfs/QUICK START SAFETY DATA SHEET_1612535979.pdf I also saw a chart showing it reduced ammonia and nitrite through a cycle. This chart was a product from their own company. Just being real here.
  5. Try loosening the bolts then tighten with the weight of the aquarium on it. I bet it will be ok.
  6. GFCI with a ground in the water is a good idea. I don't think I would worry much about sticking my hands in the tank, unless I'm holding onto a water pipe or standing in a puddle. 🙂 Can you explain the dangers of swimming in marinas? Thanks.
  7. I see you have a carbon filter. Do you add de chlore anyway? If not I would at least test for chlorine.
  8. The motor looks like new. I wonder if it was replaced. Cool find.
  9. I had a Yoyo a while back and that crazy fish never stopped moving. (or eating) I think it's normal for them to be very active during the day. I only had one so I don't know what they do in groups. Maybe you should test the water and make sure everything is ok. You should have zero ammonia and zero nitrite if it has cycled. If not you don't have enough biofiltration.
  10. You can't get good flow though the UG and sponge at the same time. You know what I mean? You need good flow for either of them to work well.
  11. Yes, please wait until the nitrites and ammonia are gone, best way to go to be safe for the fish. Being you have ammonia you are well on your way. Assuming you didn't put it in there 🙂 My tank I have now I did a fishless cycle feeding it fish food to cycle, it took what seemed to be forever (even to get ammonia). This one did not get brown algae for quite a while after it had cycled, they are all different. It now has very little brown, I think the pleco and Hillstream help the most. Oh, I do run UV, that should help too.
  12. Luckily brown will usually calm down over time. I'm sorry to say you can't really water change your way out of brown algae. It is what it is, normal. You can get some of the phosphate and nitrate out that they like but don't count on that working either. I combat it with easy plants like anubius and with fish like love to eat it. I have a bristle nose pleco and a hillstream loach. They don't get very big and they go to town on the brown stuff. I seriously doubt my little amount of plants does much. Are you going to get fish? The python system has been good to me over the years. I do use a this one now because my tank is so tall it's hard to get a syphon going with the super tall python. This might be good for that smaller tank too, it's different tubes for length and the little trigger to start the syphon is pretty cool. https://www.amazon.com/Aquarium-Cleaner-Changer-Air-Pressing-Controller/dp/B083NRD2HJ
  13. I think it might even be illegal to sell/give away plants without some kind of license probably because of evasive species getting spread around. At least doing it here might be. But to ask someone local why not? I would ask them how much just to be sure they don't mind giving away the cuttings. I'm not positive what "is is kosher" means though. lol
  14. exactly! I've been infested with trumpets that must have come in on a plant. I never saw the little booger or eggs but it sure has multiplied! When I get up in the AM I see virtually none, then at my first feed they come to the surface and it looks like some kind of snail horror film in there!! lol It makes me feels better if I think about how they are cleaning my sand through and through. Part of the tank's little eco system I tell myself 🙂
  15. Please don't tell us the site of that made you hungry! 🤮
  16. Does it change so slow that chlorine is not a problem? It would scare me to not filter it though.
  17. I would follow @Colu meds in the FOOD. What does the water look like? Is it super clear or kind of cloudy? If it's not super clear I would question the bio filtration. Check out Cory's video on using course foam only. Look for optimizing the HOB or something similar. The more foam and bigger filter the better to prevent these bacterial problems.
  18. @Odd Duck so the question was...basically....will moving my fish from a (probably) 6.5 pH to 8 harm my fish. The answer is no. There is lots of research on this, here's some. “Effect of Varying Water pH on Hormonal and Haematological Parameters of Discus (Symphysodon aequifasciatus)”. S. Swain et. al. 2019: https://wkrec.ca.uky.edu/files/interactionsphetc.pdf “Phytoplankton Photosynthesis, Micronutrient Interactions and Inorganic Carbon Availability in a Soft Water Vermont Lake”, Allen, 1972 “Evaluation of pH Shock on Hatchery-reared Rainbow Trout”, Witschi et. al. 2011
  19. There is a saying when it comes to science. Correlation is not causation. There are studies on temp and pH with fish. The changes have to be huge to cause any effect. Now I would not do that on purpose to fish, heck, I even try to get my temp as close to the tank as possible when I change water. Anyway, these things are just not as important as we all have been told over the years. Funny, I looked into temperature a while back. I found a study that found varying the temp on the fish actually made them live longer. My guess is because it's like that in nature, which makes perfect sense. We have all been taught that temp must be stable and it just isn't true.
  20. interesting, so what temp and/or pH did they go from then to when you saw this? It must have been a VERY big difference huh?
