  1. Just your standard cherries. I would like to get them to the point where they are a deep red which means I need to cull them out. New to doing that so going to be a big learning curve.
  2. Ok. I have a 10 gallon that I picked up last year. Been sitting in my garage collecting dust. My main 20 gallon is over run by cherry shrimp. My plan is to move 50 or 60 over to the garage tank so they can keep breeding and help to support this tanks existence. The problem is my garage is not heated. It’s insulated but is still cold. My thought is to enclose it with rigid foam insulation and use a higher powered heater, 200W, to keep the temp where it needs to be (pictures included). Is this too much? As of today, doing a leak check of the tank. Added 8 gallons of water and marked the water line with removable ink. In the interim, created the enclosure of rigid foam and put together the sponge filter setup. Also have a large clump of Java moss to put in here once I start the cycle. I had an extra large ACO sponge filter laying around. Only thing is it’s big for the tank. So, I modified it to a shorter version. water and garage temp at 47 degrees. The main door doesn’t get opened often so hopefully the temp will go up. That’s about it for today. Will give a progress report tomorrow!
  3. My tank has become cloudy as well. Became very noticeable after my shrimp colony exploded. Currently using a coarse sponge filter. Reading all these posts has me thinking of adding a secondary fine sponge filter to clear the water. I really appreciate all the info from this group!
  4. What happened? I have noticed this on one of my shrimp
  5. One of the three Pygmy Cory’s in my 6 gallon
  6. I just noticed this fuzz on one of my Amano shrimp. Any ideas?
  7. I just picked up 3 of these little guys last week. I have them in my well planted 6 gallon with some cherry shrimp and a mystery snail. I’m thinking of getting 3 more to try and get them to school. They do hang around the upper half of the tank and among the leaves quite a bit
  8. Thanks! I will need to pick up the scraper for the float and give it a try.
  9. Has been a couple months since the last update. Everything in the tank is doing great! The 10 cherry shrimp I added has now grown to at least 10 times that amount. I added a photo of the shrimp enjoying a piece of Repashy. The plants are growing like crazy! There seems to be a buildup on the inside of the glass. It’s tough to remove with an algae scraper and the mag float. Makes it look like the water is a bit cloudy. Guess I just need to scrape it more often. The snail infestation seems to have died back. Reducing the amount of food has helped that. I was able to take some clippings of the background plants and plant those in the 6 gallon. Should help suck up excess nutrients in that tank.
  10. The tank is a 6 gallon cube. Here is a photo. Prior to the exploratory shrimp, there are 5 large Amano, one mystery snail and a betta. The betta is actually scared of the shrimp. When they get close, he swims away. So, no predation there. Also, the shrimp are about the same size as the betta. I am running a sponge filter with good flow. Just tested the water: ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate 20 They get fed on the daily. Either a little extra vibra bites, crab cuisine pellets or algae wafers broken into small pieces; all Hikari brand.
  11. Woke up to one of my Amano shrimp dead on the floor a few feet from its tank. The tank has no lid but does have a nice layer of pothos and floating plants. Any ideas why?
  12. My big boy albino catfish making an appearance. He usually is hiding in the back of the tank. Can see one of the large Amano shrimp just above him on the stick. Thank you!! Have really enjoyed this hobby.
  13. I have upped the dosing of Easy Green the last couple weeks. My ferns are doing much better. The pinholes have reduced and there is new growth! I added 10 cherry shrimp last week. They are so small compared to the monstrous Amanos. At the most, I have seen 6 at one time. Hoping the others are hiding in the piles of moss and rocks. The other fish seem to be leaving them alone. The only ones I have been concerned about are the Cherry Barbs. They were interested at first but have seemed to lose interest. I'm hoping to get some offspring with these guys. Have been interested in trying to start a nice sized colony.
  14. Wow! Your tank has really filled in within the last month. Looks great!!
  15. Thank you for the compliments. This hobby is definitely a trial and error on so many levels! I do like gouramis but would like to have some schooling fish. I have been looking into the nanos. The tank is doing good. Java ferns are still producing but have a potassium deficiency. Going to add an extra dose of easy green per week for a month and see how that does. Fish are good. Lost a Cory so now have just 3. The Amano shrimp are cleaning the heck out of the tank. 3 of them are larger than the cherry barbs! I’ll have to try and get a picture. The hitchhiker snails have exploded in population and are everywhere but they are helping to keep the algae down. Thank you! I love my Cory’s. Sadly, I lost one so now only three. I have been thinking of the rasboras or endlers since they’re smaller and I could go with a larger group of them. Guppies might be better since I have been thinking of adding some cherry shrimp.
  16. Thanks! I keep reading about imposters so I glad they are the real deal. Guess the larvae will be food for my other fish
  17. First, are these guys actual Amano shrimp? Second, it looks like they have some eggs attached. Any ideas?
  18. So, Amano shrimp need brackish water to spawn. Are they able to berry up without it? I have 4 large Amano shrimp and it looks like two have eggs. I tried to get a photo. Maybe you can tell me if this is truly an Amano or not
  19. Walked by my betta tank and saw my mystery snail with a couple things on it I haven’t seen before. Any ideas?
  20. @Axredx After reading this, I went and looked how the heater was sitting in the tank after it comes off the glass. I did notice that it had twisted 90 degrees. I then positioned the power cord so the heater was parallel with the glass before I stuck it back on. Scraped the glass and cleaned the suction cups with my fingers. That’s was 5 days ago and it’s still stuck to the glass. Hope this helps!
  21. Has been awhile! Tank is still doing good. Still have 2 cherry barbs, 4 cory catfish, 3 Nerite snails and a bajillion other snails that were among the moss I purchased a few months ago. Added 4 large Amano shrimp to help keep the algae down. You can see one in the upper left on the thermometer. I lost Frank the betta. Even the med trio couldn’t help him pull through. The Java ferns are doing well. So many sprouts! Have attached quite a few to rocks and positioned throughout. About time to do some more picking, again! Have been contemplating guppies. I saw some Endlers yesterday that I really liked. Any recommendations?
  22. I’m having the same issue. Cleaned the glass free of whatever and wiped down the suction cups. Still comes off the glass. Any ideas?
