  1. I've got 2 completely green 5 gallon tanks and a 20L that leans green all the time, sometimes worse than others. And my 55-gallon has been murky for 2 weeks and I'm wondering if it's going green too. So...I'm a little frustrated and want to find a way to clear it.

Have any of you ever done this? Added daphnia to a tank that had green water? Did it work?

I'm thinking I wouldn't need very many and then the fish will enjoy them as a treat too.

Any advice on trying this method of clearing the water?

And I do have a reserve of green water brewing in another bucket, and will be setting up a tank for green water eventually.

    Thanks everybody.

  2. If I wanted to start a green water tank, and I had a 10 gallon just sitting around, and I added the water from the water changes to that tank, what's the best way to keep it green?

Can I grow tiny things in that water on purpose to feed to my fish? I'm being deliberately vague because I've never paid attention to the names of tiny little creatures that are grown for the purpose of feeding. I really didn't want to go there. But when you have lovely green water, is that a good starting place? Or is the green water the end goal?

I will go do my research too, I promise! Just thought I'd throw out a few questions to know exactly what to research.

I recently had an issue with green water in the same tank. Unfortunately, had to break out the old UV sterilizer. As much as my fish were enjoying it, it was a bit too unsightly for a work display tank that other people had to look at.  They sure did a lot of dancing around in it though!

Well, that's interesting, @Lynze! I've never had this tank go green on me before, so it makes me wonder what I did differently this time. I think I'll probably do a water change in both tanks before we add new meds. I just feel the need to SEE the fish when I'm dosing with meds! I want to make sure they are all doing well during the process.  Well, that...and...I also dropped in 4 blue shrimp into the Sparklers tank and I've not seen them since I let them out of the net! 😲 I really do need to know how they're doing too.

  4. Hey @Drummer230, so glad to have you join us here at the forum! I'm from FL, but I'm sure there are folks here from TN too. Just read through posts and you'll figure out where people are based. As for guppies, there is MUCH wisdom to be found here on that subject, so delve right in. And in no time, I bet you'll be adding your comments and questions right along with everyone else. 🙂

  5. Hi @Crysti, so glad you joined us here on the forum. It sounds like you've got your hands full with turtles and guppies and minnows. At least you have a way to control the guppy population! LoL!!!

As for your questions, @James Black gave you good answers and awesome videos to watch! Keep hanging around here and you'll learn all kinds of things...at least I know *I* certainly have! It's a great place for educational input. And we're happy to have you here to add your expertise about turtles to the rest of the knowledge base! 🙂

  6. Welcome @stephk! Glad you joined us here on the forum! Since you're still doing research, I'd suggest reading everything here that looks interesting to you. Especially check out the photo forum thread to get an idea of how different size tanks look and work. And by all means, if you have any specific questions, ask away! 🙂

  7. Hey @Tankgirl413! Welcome to the forum!

I have a 55 too. It had only guppies for the longest time (several hundred of them, actually!😲); but we've moved most of them to ponds outside. Since then, we've added chain loaches, Siamese algae eaters, white clouds and a mystery snail. We've also got 6 honey gourami in quarantine and will be adding them to the 55 too.

I'd love to see a pic of your 55 with it's collection...it sounds great!

Not exactly related but I have to chime in. I live near Chicago but I have been in Orlando for the last 8 days or so for work, what you guys consider a cold spell, is what I consider shorts weather!! Loving the fresh seafood!!

@Alesha Got any recommendations for fish stores? I have checked out a few but everything is salt water down here. WWC in Orlando was neat to see as they apparently are the biggest coral farm in the world. The guy was nice enough to spend 20 minutes talking to me about corals and the hobby in general when I told him I wasn’t from around here.

Hi @toothgrinder. Yeah,  we Floridians are pretty wimpy when it comes to cold weather. LoL!

I don't know of any good stores in Orlando, sorry. I don't get up that way often.  I know of an awesome fish farm in Lakeland, called Imperial Tropicals.  They used to do tours of their farm before Covid-19. You could shoot them an email,  if you are interested. They *might* let you visit.  It's about an hour drive from Orlando. They are incredible. We always buy from them if they have what we want in stock.

  9. You've gotten good answers here @FishStix. I have super hard water, but the KH tends to swing if I don't include coral AND a Wondershell. Some of my tanks also need occasional doses of Alkaline Buffer, too; but I don't do that until they start to swing to an acidic pH.

And yeah, I agree that the cloudy water is your cycle reestablishing the bacteria.  So, be patient, check your parameters often, do water changes if the ammonia or nitrite get high. But otherwise, just let it do it's thing.

Sorry for your fishy losses. Hoping it will do better after this cycle is finished.
