  1. I'm going to give this a try with the Igapo mix.
  2. I might try this with silver dollars and some tougher plants like anubis.
  3. I do feed them emerald entree once a week. I like to try and give all my fish some kind of veggie. Mostly spirulina flake except for the bigger fish like the Buenos Aires. So I have inadvertently made mine not eat my plants because of what I feed them. That's pretty cool to know. I wonder if that could be pulled off with silver dollars?
  4. That's so crazy how ours don't touch plants and yours nearly destroyed a tank full. I've had mine for about 3 months and my friend has had his for well over a year.
  5. Where did this notion that they eat plants come from? I have them in 2 planted tank. Both schools of 12. My friend also has a school of 25 in his 125 planted tank. Not a single plant in either of our tanks has ever been touched. Between the 3 tanks there is every kind of plant you could think of. Swords, stem plants, floating plants, crypts, ferns, moss. Seriously a smorgasbord of plants and none have been touched. Any thoughts? Also our fish are from different suppliers if they makes any difference.
  6. Just wanted to share a few pics of my planted 20 gallon. It's a little foggy and looks grainy in the tank but I just put brine shrimp in the tank about an hour before these were taken. CO OP brand baby brine of course. I like the upward shot, even with all the water spots... I really need to clean my glass lol. And yes, there is a snailsplosion in the tank. I love snails and just let them be. Malaysian trumpet snails and bladder snails. Edit: The zip ties are to keep the anubis attached to the wood. I don't like to use glue so I use zip ties until the roots of the anubis grow around the wood.
  7. Thanks for the ideas!! I like the chili rasboras and the betta but I already have tanks with both of those fish. I really like the catfish idea because I absolutely love catfish. As for the sponge filter that is a guaranteed lock. I have CoOp sponge filters in everyone of my tanks big and small.
  8. So, I recently procured a nice 10 gallon tank from a client for just 5 bucks. I would like to fill it halfway with water and have fish in the bottom and driftwood sticking out of the water with terrestrial plants growing on the driftwood. I'm fairly well versed in the plants but, I don't know what to put in 5 gallons of water. I would prefer something that schools or shoals. Any ideas?
  9. I have what I think is a great idea for a sticker. A Murphy and Ladybird "lovebirds" sticker. I know they are not in real life but, I thought it would be cool to have a sticker like that. Ladybird could even be portrayed on the sticker with a chipped tooth. Anyway, just a thought I had.
  10. Out of the foods you see in the picture; what food do you think Bolivian rams would go crazy over? The live baby brine perhaps, or maybe the cichlid flakes and pellets, the frozen or freeze dried foods maybe, possibly the catfish pellets? Nope...... The bug bites pleco formula.... Don't get me wrong, they gladly eat the other foods, but they freak out almost into a frenzy when the pleco sticks go in. I don't even have plecos in this particular tank. I tried them one day to see if the gold lasers might like them and the Rams went crazy and do so every time I feed the pleco sticks. Also a pic of this tank full of tannins.
  11. So, about 3 months ago a LFS gave me a bag full of trumpet snails. I put them in my tank and for the first couple weeks it was cool. I would see them from time to time popping out of the substrate or cruising the glass. Then..... Nothing. I thought they must have all died for some reason. Then today I'm passing by my tank and I see a couple tiny white spots on the glass. Upon close inspection I notice its baby trumpet snails. Then I start looking closer and realize an explosion is coming out of the substrate. I counted 35 in total before I stopped. I guess they didn't die after all. Do they breed in the substrate or something? Sorry the pics are blurry. It is very hard to get my camera to focus on something that small.
  12. Awesome! Thank you for the information. I'm going to grab some jars tomorrow and start a couple more.
  13. I recently made my first infusoria culture. I used tank water, a piece of hornwort and a piece of acorn squash. It just cleared up and all I can say is, WOW! It is so cool to draw that water up in a pipette and see all the micro minis in there moving all around. Anyway, I am attempting to breed bolivian rams and orange laser corys so that is why I made the culture. My question is how long do I have before the culture needs to be "refreshed" as far as taking out the old piece of squash for a new one or even new water?
  14. Thank you! The caves are for my clown plecs and they are closed on one end. I made them out of sculpey. They seem to really enjoy them as they are always in one of them.
  15. This is by NO means a show tank. I have background plants up front. Swords stuck all over. I just like it to look like a jungle. It's recently trimmed so it's not so jungly. The pic of the small orange platy by the Ludwig is the fish fish ever born in my tank. Im keeping that one for the long haul. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the pics. The stem and roots in the back left corner are a jade plant I have growing out of the top of the aquarium. Thanks for taking a look.
  16. I upgraded my platy tank from a 10 to a 20 and got a bunch of fry. There are 30 - 35 by my count, but it's hard to tell because they keep moving. These are currently in a breeder box.
  17. Just messing around with my lights and taking random pictures. I fell in love with this one. Sorry for the poor quality. Cell phone camera. I really need to get a decent camera if anyone has any suggestions.
  18. Sorry it took so long to reply. That plant is aponogeton ulvaceus. They start as bulbs. I got them in a pack at petco. I think they are called betta bowl buddies or something like that. Aquarium CO OP might sell them also but I'm not sure on that.
  19. Just wanted to share a picture of my 10 gallon. Planted with 5 platy. 1 male and 4 females. I'm no aqua scape genius. I just like the tank to look all jungly. Set it up about 2 1/2 months ago. I can't remember what they are called but the grass like bulb plants are always pearling like crazy. There is a little bit of algae in there but I keep it off the glass and the rest doesn't really bother me. Sorry the pictures aren't awesome. Crappy cell phone camera.
  20. I have a 10 gallon with 5 platy. 1 male and 4 females. I am 1000% sure without a doubt only one is a male. The issue is he is super aggressive to all the females except the one he keeps trying to breed with. She has been receptive to him and I'm pretty sure she is pregnant. Her belly has nearly doubled in size in a week. Why would he be aggressive to the other females? They are all mature enough to breed. The tank is very heavily planted and has driftwood. Plenty of hiding places and line of sight breaks. He's not overly aggressive to any particular female. He just not "nice" to any of them except the one. Any ideas what is going on with this guy?
  21. Just wanted to tell both of you who replied thank you. The CO2 from the water department must be what is going on. The water hasn't set for 24 hours in the bucket yet and it has already made its way from 7.2 to 8.4. I imagine it will make it to 8.8 after the full 24 hours. I've got some neutral regulator on the way. I was hoping to run this tank without any additive other than dechlorinator and ferts but I really want cherry shrimp in it and I don't think they will do well at 8.8. Anyway thanks again for the advice.
  22. Thanks for the advice. I've got water in a bucket bubbling with an air stone right now. I'm going to test it tomorrow. I tried the vinegar trick and got no bubbles. Thanks for telling me about that. I tested the water before I started bubbling it and got 7.2. Do you think seachem neutral regulator would be a good option for keeping the ph neutral or close to it?
  23. My water comes out of the tap at 7.2. The only thing I add to it before it goes in my tank is dechlorinator. Just regular bagged gravel from Lowe's as the substrate. I rinsed that extremely well before it went in the tank though. Why then in the tank is my water showing 8.8? This is a 10 gallon tank that has been set up for about 4 weeks now. There are some moss balls, a couple dwarf chain swords, 2 java ferns, and 2 dwarf Lilly bulbs. No fish. I do use seachem flourish in the recommended dosage once a week. Im not convinced the tank is cycled though. Ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate 5. I want to eventually add cherry shrimp but at a ph of 8.8 plus I don't think I'll be able to do that. EDIT: I also use aquarium co op root tabs.
