  1. Gars have such funny looking snouts, I love them
  2. You're fine! I didn't really know the term for marginal plants until relatively recently lol
  3. Uhh pretty much just look up "marginal plant list" and you should be able to find some? Marginal plants are plants that take root in water but their stems/leaves and such grow outside of water.
  4. Ended up just buying a pump that was more suited for outdoor use. I'm super excited because the lotus I want to put in the pond germinated properly- I was worried at first that I messed up scarrifying them but nope most of them sprouted just fine!
  5. Ooh! Exciting~ You could probably look into some of the smaller types of marginal plants if you want to hide the filter on a pond this size!
  6. oh man i missed so many rounds over the weekend 😭
  7. Hm, does anyone have any tips on weatherproofing an air pump for long term use outdoors? I was planning on running a sponge filter out there but would the ambient humidity and possible temperature swings mess with the pump powering it? I was planning on just kinda sticking the pump in a box with holes drilled in it or buying a Sockit box but I'm concerned that's not going to be enough.
  8. I'm planning on trying to add pickerel weed, lobelia cardinalis, either some vallisneria americana or dwarf sag (or both) on the very bottom, and american lotus. Possibly limnobium spongia if the lotus doesn't work out? Both lotus and pickerel weed seem to get pretty big so I'm worried about them crowding each other out. (Actually I'm worried I'm overcrowding with my plant choices in general, so if this seems cramped someone please tell me). I'm focusing on plants native to my area so if my plant choice seems unusual that's why lol. As much as I love water lettuce I live close to a waterway so I'm a bit paranoid.
  9. Yeah I'm lucky medakas are generally cooler water fish. I'd heard they can overwinter so long as you keep a top on the pond to keep things a few degrees above freezing? So here's hoping.
  10. I'm not entirely sure tbh, I'm probably gonna go with what's available in my area- and then failing that what I can get online.
  11. Figured I'd start talking about my journey here since I recently gathered most of the supplies I needed! Hopefully I don't forget to update this thread lol. I ended up getting a 40 gallon stock tank instead of the 110 since I misinterpreted the dimensions and it turns out there was no way the 110 gal was fitting in my dad's car 😔. Maybe someday lol. I have the gravel ready and most of the plants... just need to get the thing set up and running properly before I can add fish.
  12. Contributed to the airline spaghetti in my room lol Currently seeding a sponge filter and providing a little air via air stone for some plants I'm quarantining on a USB nano air pump. I figure once I'm done with both of those I can put away the USB pump and have it as a backup.
  13. Yeah usually with my plans I just wing it but on a whim this time I decided to make a diagram; and then I ended up finding it really useful for organization purposes. It basically became a visual checklist for the stuff I needed to get to build it and it helped me sort my thoughts surrounding what I wanted to do. Edit: updated pond plans, in case anyone was interested in them I might plant either the lotus or the pickerel weed separately because both of them get BIG from what I've seen and that may be a bit too much for an 100 gallon pond lmao
  14. Admittedly my attempts to stay in-state are for shipping time/cost reasons, not sourcing but yeah if you know anyone with a pond/aquarium/etc. they might also be able to get you the hookup @FLFishChik! I just don't have too many local aquarium keeper friends yet so I forgot to consider that 😭
  15. I have exactly one (1) fish, and have not kept any others so I'm not going to lie I've been mostly voting based on like. Aesthetic interest lmao
  16. Oof, that happened to me with my betta. Searched all over the tank for him- under wood, in the plants, in the floaters. I was terrified he'd jumped out despite the lid but then the next day he was back again lol. I think he was hiding in the hollow base of an artificial decoration I'd put in- I found him there one time on a different day. Today the wetland plants I ordered off etsy came in! I'm planning on putting them in a container pond when it's a little warmer out- so for now I just spent time planting the ones that needed planting and putting the ones that needed to be in water in temporary setups.
  17. Oh sick What I usually do when I want a plant is search etsy, ebay, etc. for the specific plant I want and then try to narrow it down to either my state/region or adjacent states/regions. Though duckweed is easy a lot of people online'll give it away for free. Hell, I got mine for free as a hitchhiker on some unrelated aquarium plants. I guess if you're really persnickety about like, duckweed species then that's a bad idea but I think most of the stuff out there is common duckweed anyway? And if I want to go to a store in person I kinda just search google maps with a few keywords, like "aquarium plants" or "pond supply store" or the like. Granted, I live in a decently populated area so these kinds of stores are a little more common- if you're super rural this advice might be unhelpful.
  18. My region actually has an official water gardening guide so I'm wondering if they have one of those for where you are- I'm not gonna go and assume such a thing exists because different regional governments have different policies etc. etc. but sometimes the resources out there can surprise you. They listed some floating plants that were native to my area.
  19. havent actually built one yet, and a lot of things have changed since i made this (including size/dimensions of container and plant selection) but here's the mini pond diagram i made when i was spitballing ideas for what to do! might prove interesting to you (the purple plant was meant to represent pickerel weed since that grows native in my area and i wanted to use native plants for this but then i forgot to add it to the key lmao)
  20. ooooooh i do not need this temptation right now lmao i blame my mom for imparting on me a love for sales, i dont even plan on keeping any fish indoors any time soon and yet. my brain is like "holy crap 50% off!!!"
  21. have an assortment of snails from across my two tanks! can you believe i got these cute little guys for free lol?
  22. I plan on buying medaka eggs directly from Japan to hatch out; as they're expensive (at least relative to my income) I'm a little nervous about hatching and raising them since this would be my first time hatching fish eggs. I've been able to gather the basics off of youtube videos; ex. keep the water clean (50% water changes every day until they're a certain size), feed fry a variety of foods more often than you would an adult fish (3-5x a day) bc they have small bellies and quick metabolisms, use one (1) drop of methylene blue per (variable) no. of gallons of water to keep the eggs from fuzzing up (and, failing that, use tannins from botanicals), etc. etc. Is there anything I'm missing or have I mostly got everything down? Is taking my first try at hatching eggs with ones that are so expensive a bad idea? I plan to order them late March/early April to make sure shipping temps don't dip below freezing in my area, is this a sound idea? A little worried about temps in my house but I've heard medaka eggs just need to reach a certain number of degrees across multiple hours to hatch. Apologies if this is in the wrong section, figured egg hatching was bundled into breeding.
  23. .... Huh. It doesn't look very efficient but I'm a novice when it comes to diy filters. I'm assuming the water comes in through the end with the joints and comes out through the end with the valve? It doesn't seem like the water would spend very much time being pushed through the filter media but I could be wrong. Every bucket filter I've seen has had the flow coming out at a different level than the intake so you can control where the debris goes/how much of it comes out and having the pipes around the same level strikes me as odd. Anyone with more experience than me feel free to chime in!
