  1. So I have some fry I'm raising up and I want to get them on blackworms at some point. Anyone have any tips for culturing them? I've been doing my own research on other parts of the internet and I read this thread on the matter on this very forum but I was wondering if there was anything else I could learn before I start. Right now I have a plastic bin with a layer of gravel and about eight inches of water in it. I'm seeding a sponge filter to cycle it later and I have a place where I can buy starter blackworms. Admittedly I kinda want to keep this on the lower effort side because the culture's going to be in my basement for temperature reasons and I don't yet have an easy way to do water changes. (Aside from carrying a bucket up and down the stairs lol)
  2. Realized I haven't posted an update on the actual pond in a while, here's the most recent pic I've taken of it- I added more plants and the pickerelweed has grown, but it's still far from what I hope it'll be.
  3. I'd read that medaka eggs are super low maintenance so I've just got them in a sterilite shoebox full of dechlorinated water and some floating plants from established tanks. I don't have air running or anything and about 10 have hatched already. For feeding I've just been tapping a paintbrush loaded with Hikari First Bites on the rim of the box to get the powder to settle on the water's surface.
  4. I'm also very new to this, admittedly- I was planning on feeding Hikari First Bites since I think that's small enough? I need to look into other food sources for variety, though. Edit: Oh, right! And I have frozen baby brine- so I'm going to be feeding that as well.
  5. Okay I lied, here's an incredibly crappy photo of the baby 😭
  6. The fish eggs got here, they've been set up in a sterilite shoebox for the past two days and one of them already hatched! I tried to get a pic of the baby but it was too hard so here's one of their siblings instead.
  7. Ordered some fish eggs, they'll be here Saturday! Also gonna get some adults later so the pond isn't empty while those guys grow out.
  8. I haven't used stratification, just scarification. Unfortunately while I have been able to get them to sprout offshoots they haven't been growing leaves? Some of them are indoors and some outdoors, so I'm wondering if I haven't hit the right combination of warmth+sunlight yet.
  9. Oh! I said this bc I tested already, it's showing 0/0/20ppm for ammonia/nitrites/nitrates. Also I forgot to mention that I'd pre-seeded my filter for like a month beforehand, so it didn't totally come out of nowhere but I was still surprised how fast it happened That and there's an ammonia source in there already.
  10. No pics today but the pond is cycled already?? It only took four days haha I know cycling isn't the end-all be-all people say it is and it's going to be at least a couple days before i add anything but it's good to know it's at least fish safe
  11. got the filter in, here's hoping it clears up the water a little lol
  12. I don't currently have the fish, I'm planning on ordering them when I'm more sure the pond has enough beneficial bacteria to support them. My LFS told me I just need to give them a week's notice bc they need time to get the fish in anyway.
  13. finally was able to do the basic setup on my outdoor container pond! I'm excited for the plants to grow in and to get it cycled so I can add fish
  14. Aaaaaand it has been set up for now. I swear to god I rinsed the gravel lol
  15. So I ended up calling the electrician! Long story short, we're getting a new outlet installed. Plans are now moving ahead! It begins.........
  16. Oh, there's a thought. I will consider this, thank you 😮
  17. This will probably sound silly but my brain has this "out of sight, out of mind" thing going on where if something isn't in a place where I'll pass by it all the time I just kinda ignore it. It's not that I'm doing it intentionally, it's just how my brain works. So unfortunately I don't pass by the fridge in my house when it's feeding time for the boy, and I'm worried about just forgetting to use the food that requires refrigeration and falling back on the pellets anyway. It's why the bloodworms are only a once in a while thing- well, aside from them also being kinda fatty. As far as I'm aware, food specially formulated for bettas is mostly just high in protein and (ideally) low in stuff like carbs and plant matter. (I say ideally because not all food brands follow this lol) I assume it also has specific minerals and nutrients that bettas would need, but I haven't really researched that so take my assumption with a grain of salt.
  18. Pulled some water lettuce from my plant tank and put it in the temporary quarantine container I set up for some snails I ordered. They should be coming in today so I'm super excited!
  19. Progress has been halted for now as I realized the outlet in the yard is not working. 😔 Called an electrician but I still need to get a quote for how much it'll cost to get a line out there. I'd try using some kind of solar power bank but all the ones I was able to find that actually looked like they had build quality were about as expensive as just calling an electrician. Anyone got any recs in case I'm not able to get the electrician in?
  20. Admittedly I'm a little lazy and my betta gets Hikari Betta Bio Gold most of the time, occasionally supplemented with bloodworms. I need to get him more variety but he's my only fish right now so I'm worried about extra food going to waste if I don't feed it before it goes bad 😭
  21. Cut some of the plants in my "pest" snail tank and added fertilizer. There was a lot of hair algae but thankfully it mostly grows out of one spot lol
  22. it's been a while but i took another pic of my "pest" snail tank
  23. whoops, was busy the past couple days. i voted but that only brings it to 5 votes u_u
