The Compelling Argument for Architects to ALWAYS Include a Fishroom

Instead of creating a journal for each of my tanks, I am going to put everything except the Walstad 10 gallon in here, and rant about why every domicile should come with a fish room/grow room, period.🥰

Imagine how much nicer everyone would be, if no matter what their SES or ability, they had a little nature inside their home, to touch daily? I grew up thinking it was normal to live for months at a time on a boat, either up at Kerr Lake with one of my parents, or sailing between Oriental and the Bahamas with the dolphins.

Of course I would need to bring that inside my home.

So, cheers to everyone who has the resources and ability to have a dedicated fish room, and here's inspiration for the rest of us😅

Helps if I remember the pictures...😏

This is the first tank I got set up after my son died. I bought it on the way home from his memorial.

I hope to replace the pump some day, for now it's just an open tank.

I'll add more as I am able😋

I think everyone has seen pictures of my spouse's tank.

I set this up back in April with soaking the wood and getting some plants started. Originally tried for a floating island of some of my spouse's favorite blooming flowers, that was an epic failure.

In May, when my MiL passed away, I stocked the tank with her favorite endlers from my female growout tank and from the turtle (Karma) pond.

Apparently, one was pregnant, because I put 6 endlers in, and by the time the lights went out, we had 12. Their antics have been cute enough to win my spouse over to enjoying the fish after 7 years of us having fish in our home together. (Spouse was relieved when my middle moved out and took the snake and the 2 tanks of fish. Fish in an outdoor pond were okay🤷‍♂️)

Tank today, after a little maintenance.

The waterfall:

The pump for the waterfall pulls water through the UGF:

16381331280513315725702738682569.jpg.fbcd1060a681f25ff2f089f1558f2350.jpg

Lots and lots of plants near the waterfall, they love the dirt and mulm under the sand.

I have no clue how many fish are in here, now.

Lots of endlers, 2 nerites, pond snails, bladder snails, Malaysia trumpet snails, at least one bright orangey red ramshorn, and 4 oz of blackworms seeded this tank.

Hope everyone has a delightful week!

@TorreyI bought 2 of those 3 g tanks (aquaponics) at the outset of the pandemic. Had a betta in each and eventually wife wanted nicer tanks if we were going to have them out for all to see and this began MTS!
Your husbands memorial Endler tank is beautiful and what a great way to celebrate a memory.
Thanks for sharing!

(Ignore the white bag in the back, I am seeding filter material for the 4' dining room tank. I meant for this to insert at the bottom 🤔🙄)

1638165850138312367246609276210.jpg.5cffb839487283b22607dc85234b4bc9.jpgSo, I broke down all the 5 gallon repurposed drink dispenser tanks, except for the one that grows snails, scuds and planaria (yes, I grow planaria on purpose for homeschooling groups to use for dissecting).

I cleaned up the Walstad tank, the Zebra danio fry tank (they aren't fry any longer), the turtle pond, and the Q/T tank.

Discovered the blue guppies had more babies in the Q/T tank, and I also noticed what appears to be gill flukes on one of the zebra danio in Q/T, and one guppy is either dealing with constipation (I think that's what Cory said in one of the videos on guppies) due to being pregnant... or she has worms.

Made me grateful for sticking to Q/T protocols. Ordering dewormer on the 1st.

I have pictures of the Walstad, I'll put them in the Walstad thread. Tomorrow I will do another 25% water change for the turtle and for the fry grow out tank, and then 🤞 everyone should be in good shape until I can resume doing water changes.

Sad that I didn't get to start the 4' dining room tank, and also grateful I decided to wait so I can take my time and enjoy what I am doing.

Still looking for a NANF breeder, I haven't heard back from either of the ones I reached out to.  😕

Here's my view from bed, time to crash because almost all the lights just went out.😅

[See image at top, because apparently my phone and I are not speaking the same language today]

Sounds like you’ve been busy! I’ve breed danios (well they breed in my tank) those babies are super tiny. The first time I thought I had something in my tank like a micro worm or something. It took well over a week and I realized those are baby fish! I can’t wait to see the progression of the 4’ tank. Will be interesting to see your seeding and other set up methods.

I was **very** busy, lol.

I am not allowed to lift anything heavier than my cup to drink liquids, and my silverware, for the next 3 weeks😬

While the 4' endler tank has brought my spouse over into actually **enjoying** watching fish, they fed fish tonight for the very first time.

EVER.

So I need the tanks to be stable until I am cleared to at least pick up a gallon of milk.😅

Student phlebotomist kind of messed up my hand, that's probably the worst thing that happened today. Surgery a success, most of my nerves back online, most of my muscles seem to be working properly, and I am home.

All the fish swam to the fronts of their tanks to 'wave' hi, and the endler bachelor tank is giving me jazz hands, lol. So grateful to have such a wonderful community here to touch base with, at the end of the day... especially a day like this.🌿🐟🌿

I had great aspirations, and we all know how *that* road is paved.

I've been interacting with the posts, and then forget to update on my tanks, and then run out of steam and say 'I'll update tomorrow'.

So, it's finally tomorrow 🤣

Left side of spouse's tank, might need a bit of a trim.

Their tank is currently full of hornwort and milfoil, they love all the hiding areas!

After 6 weeks of physical therapy ::drum roll::

I can lift 10 pounds!!!

I have been topping off with ZeroWater filtered water, since I couldn't do water changes, and started doing small water changes 2 weeks ago. Lowering the TDS has almost eliminated my cyanobacteria problem. Fish, snails and PLANTS are doing better. My overall health is improving and I thank PT and finally getting a CPAP for both. Who knew, oxygen helps with healing.😏

My phone died, conveniently my kid set up a home computer for me. I am using an old flip phone for a while, picture quality is questionable, lol. Here's an older (from my first tank cleaning post surgery) picture from the spouse's tank, and a few snail pics because Guppysnail has made a true convert out of me: I really love these guys!!!

January something photo:

T4.jpg.b2d78eba0e67d79e7f60bcfee5c0ac2d.jpg

There's actually way more growth now, lol.

Water tested for some high levels of sulfur, several heavy metals, and a few (known) contaminants from out of the tap. Solution of getting the newer (and improved?) Pur filter made it better, but TDS were still over 250 *after* running through the Pur filter. So, the ZeroWater is paying for itself for tank topoffs. Slowly, the TDS have come down. When I bought the ZeroWater mid February, TDS in this tank was over 700🤯 Now, the TDS are measuring just over 300. Snail growth shows a stress event (thank you @Guppysnail) and apparently this is the growth since I addressed the cyanobacteria and started the new water change /top off regimen on 2022/02/20

Fun to catch up on your healing and renewed ability to do a bit more than top offs. I keep circling around a RODI unit this is not helping. I’ve always had a soft spot for PT after they helped me avoid spinal surgery. Glad your back to having fun again with your tanks!

I can't justify RODI as we live in the desert and "throwing away" the effluent left from RODI in the desert should really be criminal. Especially since we didn't really get snow this year (fire season is... oh dear).

The ZeroWater is an acceptable compromise. It doesn't waste any water, at all. It's a sand and carbon (and something else but my cranial flatulence can't remember) filter that literally captures everything. Goes in the top 258 TDS, comes out the spigot 000 TDS. They even include a TDS meter (which sold for the same cost as the 40 cup filtration unit, so I figured if it didn't work, at least I got a TDS meter out of it, lol) to know when to replace the filter. They recommend replace at 006 TDS, but right now for water changes I am mixing 3:1 ZW to tap, so I'll see if I can stretch the filter a bit longer. The livebearers like harder water. If I decide to try another shrimp colony, I may go with remineralizing ZeroWater in a pico tank for the shrimp to better control parameters. I don't know yet, and at $10/filter I need to see how many gallons of water I get per filter.

My tap water *not* filtered by the Pur first ranges from 302 TDS down to 288 TDS, and the Pur only gets it down to 246 to 258 TDS... so I am really lucky I've been using plants to help with phytoremediation throughout the warmer months. If one of my tnaks was at 700 TDS before I got the ZeroWater, could you imagine what it would have been without phytoremediation???

Due to real world events, and the nature of my "job", I haven't been able to be online as much. Plus, my phone finally became obsolete, lol, so I not longer jump in the forum when I am in the doctor's waiting room. Gotta love that programmed obsolescence!

Will be adding new photos this week-end of the work done with all the "pruning leftovers".... I won't be able to get online tomorrow.

I'm following Cory's examples for taking better care of myself, so that means better sleep hygiene and no electronics at night (when I used to spend the most time on the forum).

I can't believe marks my one year anniversary of being in the Forum. @Cory thank you for promoting it a year ago!!! Do I miss the weekly livestreams?

YES!!!

Do I respect the heck out of Cory for your honesty around both the frustrations *and* the clear explanations around the choices you make and why?

Far more than I want to see livestreams.

The Forum, Nermlandia, and our Nerm Family are important templates that I encourage many of my clients to utilize to help them find their happy. I am hoping this next year will continue to bring positive growth and ever improving examples of how a little nature and building healthy communities can improve the globe... one small community at a time.

Time to catch up:

Video of the Pico Scapes from Scraps Competition on St Nermy's Day

So, here's the Scapes from Scraps tank right now (2022.04.12) without my timey-wimey mistype, lol

20220412_205446.jpg.ac46b13be0cd7f933545ab21422da3b4.jpg

@Streetwise& @Guppysnail I found a cool silver (bladder) snail that I can't get to show up as cool in a photograph as it looks in the tank. I have removed all other bladder snails in hopes of getting more of these silver beauties! the silver snail is in the bachelor tank, next door to the Pico Scapes from Scraps tank.

Here's a view of just the bachelors....

20220412_165342.jpg.22fb7254341b89a523f59af974c58f5a.jpg

There are 8 or 9 bachelors (I put 9 in, but never see all 9 at once. Max I can count is 8 at a time) of my endlers that I am waiting to see how long cool water delays the appearance of their full colors. The oldest male is from August last year, and has had fun time with 9 females to replicate his gorgeous double tail that is now almost 3x the length of his body. So far, all but one female has had babies and they appear to breed true.

833239605_20220412_164305(1).jpg.b8f4805b72839056ac201b61ea8efb27.jpg

20220412_164727.jpg.0da9afbed7f2bb0fad63bcef0574bf14.jpg

My tests on moving "Pebbles" snail eggs (some type/variety of Lymnaea that is exceeding expectations on cleaning abilities and doesn't overpopulate the way the bladders or MTS like to do) indicates fewer eggs will hatch if the egg clutch is moved from one kind of water to another despite the thicker casing. I also seem to need 2 snails, a single snail (after 6 months) still hasn't laid eggs. The endlers will not eat the tougher, chewy/almost rubbery/dry silicone textured egg sacks, so the snails don't seem to lay more than 20 eggs at a time that take a month to hatch at 74 F and over 6 weeks to hatch in cooler waters.

20220412_211352.jpg.f65c1d08db3776113d6dd5d5a51f6bd7.jpg

This clutch is in the 4' paludarium in spouse's room, and is about to hatch after 4.5 weeks.

I finally figured out how to get better pictures of the tank, by covering the paludarium portion with a dark cloth! As long as I take a picture for above the water to show emersed growth, and then cover the top to take pictures of the immersed growth, the images are much more attractive.

Thank you @Cory, @Zenzo, @Candi and the entire ACO crew for my fabulous CARE Package that I have already put to use:

The 4' paludarium has just under 30 gallons of water, and thanks to the Easy Green in my care package, we FINALLY have nitrates!!!!

20220412_203541.jpg.709f8bd2d4c11cb04fbc1da77fdeffb4.jpg

Far left strip reads 25 ppm Nitrates/0 nitrites/ ~75 GH/ ~60 to 80 kH/ and has dropped to 6.8 pH now that I am using ZeroWater for topping off and a blend of ZeroWater and Pur filtered tap water for water changes. Plenty of calcium in the water, and neither the endlers nor the snails are showing any adverse effects, while the plants have totally taken off. I am now removing a 5 gallon bucket of plants every week from the 4' tank alone, and the cyanobacteria has almost been eradicated. Every once in a while I will find a denser mat of plants with a small amount of cyanobacteria, we're talking smaller than a dime. It's a wonderful feeling!

The sound of the waterfall in the back left corner is very soothing, and while it isn't visible from the front of the tank due to the (over) growth, my spouse can watch the water running down the cholla into the tank making a lovely tinkling sound while laying down in bed. So overall success!

20220412_203917.jpg.3a3cc1f0747fc2f74e04bdbb85820f0e.jpg

Close-up, on the extreme diagonal. Very careful photography!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful week!

Special thanks to @Mmiller2001& @Seattle_Aquarist for helping me understand why I was using ferts but not getting my expected results. I'm still showing some new growth with an iron deficiency, so I haven't found my sweet spot... yet. I'm a lot closer than I have ever been in the past, though! Thank you Roy!

Those silver snails are just darling. My gold ones never show up as pretty on camera either. It took almost 8 weeks of isolation for Honey to start making her gold babies. She was just a speck when I isolated her.

Awesome unboxing video. Congratulations 🎉 Those specimen containers are the best I have ever had. Tank looks phenomenal 🥰

To bad pebbles snails don’t reproduce as quickly as bladder snails. She is just so incredible.

Great to see you up and about. It looks like you were having a good day 🤗

After not sleeping well for a while, I finally got 9 hours of sleep last night!!! What a difference that makes, especially with almost 1/3 of the night spent in deep sleep!

Which means... I probably overdid it today, lol.

I didn't water test everyone today, only the 3 tanks I did water changes on.

Patient Spouse™ 4' tank

10% Water change, predominantly from catching and sorting some of the fish (the ones who kindly jumped into the specimen box for me) and removing plants. This tank gave up another 5 gallon bucket of plants, and the turtle already ate most of them.

After water change added 3 squirts of Easy Green

Nitrates ~10 ppm

nitrites and ammonia both 0

GH 300

KH 40

pH ~6.6 (right between color options, so selecting the middle)

These are from last week, actually. When I went in to feed the fish this morning, the entire water surface was covered by plants, so time to prune!

After pics!

I took out 5 gallons worth of plants from the left third of the tank, alone. I took out another 5 gallon bucket from the middle and right 2/3 thirds of the tank. Added the new Co-Op sponge, and discovered the water level is 2" to short for the uplift tube, so wil be ordering a shorter/smaller filter. Until then, I am simply running without the tube. Not as effective, but I'm seeding the sponge filter right now anyway, so🤷🏼‍♂️

The anubias I had put in the tank in January had tripled in size, so I broke it into parts and placed on the logs. Eventually it should grow sufficiently to cover the black plastic canvas in the back left corner that utilizes half the runoff from the waterfall through the lava rock and plants to function as a filter.

Anubias nana only doubled in size, so I didn't separate it, just trimmed off the last of the melt damaged leaves. It did have 3 very healthy new leaves!!!

The java fern 'windelov' was ready to be divided, and gave me 5 *very* healthy pieces! Here are the rest of the  "after" pics:

Spouse told a story for the fish that jumped in the specimen container, and wrote this when I asked if I could have a written word story. I need to just start recording these fabulous stories they make up on the fly, the written versions just don't include as much of the entertaining dialogue!

"A large 4 sided object descends into the water.  Jimmy wriggled his tail offrhythm.  At first, displaying his shimmery scales and whipping tail to a passing female, rudely interrupted by barrier sliding down him.  But, he was so far from the Eastern barrier.  Did it move like the stories his great great great grandpa Spiny told at night before 1st sleep?  Nonsense.  That wasn't real.  Just a story to get the fry to sleep in the plant roots so we could eat the leftover food in the rocks..."

 Pico Scapes from Scraps Tank

First, I discovered that one of Pebbles' offspring is growing faster than their siblings. PT™ has named them "Prince Flappy/Princess Flappy/ Princeling Flappy" (depends on the mood and the moment). Was quite fantastic to see my spouse get so excited about a snail, a year ago I would have said "never gonna happen". I LOVE being wrong!

(You can see baby Flappy above the red plants, almost at the water line. A dark bladder snail is above and to the right, "surface surfing" for plant pieces floating from my trimmings")

Image of the 2 tanks, side by side, after cleanup, trims, and water change. Still figuring out the right proportions of Easy Green for these 2 tiny tanks.

I completely removed the wisteria, as it was not only outgrowing everything else in the tank, it kept sporting blue green algae. I can't lower the lighting, as the AR 'rosaeafolia' is not staying quite as pink as it was under a 10 hour photoperiod 2 weeks ago. Hopefully, removing the watersprite and replacing it with some Cyperus helferi (in between the uplift tube and the rocks) will cover the tube up and outcompete the blue green algae without supporting its (the cyanobacteria) growth.

Nitrates ~5 ppm

Ammonia/nitrites 0/0

GH 75 ppm

KH 80 ppm

6.8 pH

Endler Bachelor Tank

Mostly just did a small water change as I haven't quite perfected the amount of Easy Green to the amount of plants. First, I severely underdosed, and then I overshot the mark a bit. 25% water change brought nitrates back down to acceptable levels, plants look thrilled and red plants are thriving. A few leaves of the A.R. 'rosaeafolia' I had dropped in to float, are growing roots. So this tank is turning out to be a good plant propagation tank.

Nitrates 25 ppm

Nitrites/ammonia 0/0

GH 150 ppm

KH 80 ppm

I added a bit of windelov to the endler tank, and the moss is growing nicely. I need to get a close-up of the moss, as I got it in a  NMAS auction and it wasn't labeled. I glued it onto a few pieces of lava rock, and they have been doing a whole lot of nothing until I switched to the Easy Green from the other fert I had been using since I ran out of Easy Green. I still use the other 1x a week for better iron uptake.

I am really, REALLY happy with how these 2 tanks are shaping up!

Endler Bachelor tank is on the right

Karma (Turtle Pond)

So, I sorted through all the plants I removed from the other tanks. Some went to a friend who is getting started in the hobby, some went in the compost bin, some were rinsed/dipped in H2O2 and moved to other tanks... and some went to Karma's habitat.

All my plants are safe to eat in moderation, which means she pigs out on the first day and then she leaves them alone for a few weeks and focuses on hunting snails, feeder livebearers and worms. Apparently, one ginormous salad a week is plenty!

Karma didn't disappoint. When I returned after dinner to take pictures, the beautiful habitat I had made for her... was pretty much consumed.🤣

I didn't get the pump out to do a water change today, I was running out of steam by now... which means I also didn't test water parameters. This "indoor pond" holds 9.976 gallons, currently has 9 gallons in it. I was finally able to reach far enough to remove the heater that had died (and has been unplugged) since January. I just couldn't stretch far enough to undo all the turtle safety precautions until now.

Karma found the snails hiding in the foliage as well. Lots of nom nom noms going on while the bipeds ate roast beef, salad, naan and olives for dinner.

Water side didn't get torn up as badly as I expected.....

The landside, however?

And she's already gone back under her log to hide.

May everyone enjoy their weekend!

Update time:

The T4' as we call it will be getting Zebra danios in the next month or so, to help with population control of endler fry. That is infinitely easier than trying to catch them and remove them😅

Tank is requiring weekly plant removal now, as we finally eliminated the cyanobacteria and don't want it to come back!!!

The Scapes from Scraps tank finally has inhabitants:

The next-door neighbor tank, "Endler Bachelor Pad" is thriving with side lighting:

In my bedroom tanks and Karma's Turtle pond, all the tanks are off of heaters now! Walstad is halfway done with a rescape, I cleaned out a LOT of hair algae from the blue guppy tank because I had intentionally added some hair algae for the nerites.... then moved the nerites to the T4' tank... and *forgot* to remove the hair algae clump...🤦🏼‍♂️ So... it grew. And grew.... and GREW. Definitely grows faster than the moss balls! I will be redoing the canvas mesh that give the fry a "safe" place to escape the adult guppies in the next few weeks.

Despite temperatures down in the 50's in the pond thanks to the turtle heater going out in January, the "cull" endlers didn't get the memo to slow down on breeding. Only reason I don't have sky high nitrates is because Karma was brumating and stayed out of the pond, allowing the plants to grow even faster than the fish were breeding. Karma woke up today, and ate all the plants that grew on her landside (chia, watersprite, lettuces, kales, radishes, ferns, and some marigolds that survived her last salad rampage). So I planted new seeds around the perimeter of the pond for spring salad for Karma and will be moving plants from the T4' to the Turtle Pond as Karma eats them. LFS is needing to replace some tanks, so I don't currently have a recipient for the 100+ feeder surplus/month my tanks provide.

The blue guppies I picked up at our club meeting last year are obviously an endler hybrid and have a gorgeous "lace" pattern of blues and yellows on the body, and a more endler style tail. Explains their hardiness, these are *not* the super sensitive guppies I tried out a few years ago. The longfin danios they are currently sharing a tank with (downsize results from when I prepped for surgery) are culling the slower swimming fry and influencing the tail shape and colors in just 6 generations. I am looking at the feasibility of outcrossing to a couple of my endler males with double swords to see what I get color morphology and tail shape wise.

Fry grow out tank has 3 floating fry boxes of endler fry waiting to be sexed, plus another 20 danio fry, plus my select male endlers who are already proven breeders with gorgeous BIG black eyes, nice "eye spots', and the double sword I covet.

I started two local NMAS members on amphipods, and the amphipod tank is still recovering. Took the full 24 hours to consume the green beans this week, so won't be doing much with them for another month or two.

Now that the Co-op has its own heater, spouse and I discussed stocking options, and will be making the T4' an "Americas Tank" of cool water species either next fall or spring (depending on when the NANF we are looking at will be available) and the dining room tank will be the warmer fish species of NANF to get the really pretty colors the Patient Spouse™ was asking for and I was concerned wouldn't tolerate our 65 F to 68 F house.

Win-Win-Win

Have a great weekend everyone!

I wonder how it would do secured into a ball form 🧐 Might just start one in Snailtopia and see what I get 😁

Everything is looking so wonderful!  Sounds like everything is settled in just right now.  I love your updates 🤗
