A little early to be throwing in the towel, isn't it?!

Plants are looking healthy, that's half the battle. I think replacing one of the reds with either a bright yellow or orange plant could be nice, like didiplis diandra or ammania pedicellata.

I like that you have lots of different "shapes" in your planting. It really leads the eye around the scape. Can't wait to see it grown in more!

Way early! Just venting my frustration. I think I’m taking the Furcata out. Got my hands on Sesifloria and some 52b and a few others. The only orange I have is Miro and I’ll check out your recommendation. Curious, is Rotala Orange Juice actually orange?

Nice! Is that myrio roraima? I think it was cropped out of the photo so I missed it. That's a good orange plant. Golden myrio is great too, and a little less aggressive.

Sessiflora is a bit of a weed, but 53b is great for dutch tanks. Nice slow, even growth. I've never grown rotala orange juice but I find regular rotundifolia often turns a nice orange.

It’s in the holding tank. Should I swap it with the Furcata?

Feeling a bit of confidence now with the scape. I’m feeling my style/ interpretation of Dutch coming together. Novice interpretation that is! Still some clutter from substitute plants but I’m liking things so far. I pulled the Lobilia, and going with the trusty Serphyllum as the street.

That's a awesome rig!

Pardon my naivete, but is there room for a CO2 container under there, too?

Unfortunately, no. A big oversight on my part. I will be running the CO2 tank and ATO on the side. I’ll DIY something to make it look pretty 😆

What do you charge your local fish store for the plants you give them?

I've usually worked out a couple bucks a piece for 3-5 leaf anubias. Usually I throw them into an old pot with Rockwool and bring them in that way. Same deal with crypts and swords.

For stem plants, I usually do a bundle of 3 6" stems for a dollar.

Been a while since I've taken any to the store, but it always worked out well - inevitably, I'd spend whatever I "made" while I was there, and most of the trimmings were going into the garbage anyway. Best thing I did was package the plants before bringing them in - putting them in pots, bundling stems, labeling everything... I don't think any store wants to take the time to sort through a bucket.

I forgot to mention I’m currently testing the soon to be first commercially available Yugang reactor. Aqua Rocks Colorado has been working on this and sent me a prototype to try. I’m a bit side tracked while in Ohio for my daughter’s graduation, but will be home today to resume testing.

I did have a few hours to try before leaving and was able to get a 1.3pH drop within 39 minutes of use. I ordered a few parts so I could further optimize around this tanks’ configuration. Here’s a few photos.

I’ll be home later today and resume testing. I will report more information shortly.

Hey man,

Newbie question if I may... When you switched over to BDBS a few months ago, did your tank go through a diatom phase as the sub matured?

Yes! I've read about this tank. Absolutely beautiful, possibly my favourite tank at the moment.

Cheers

If I remember, ever so slightly. It went away real quick.

Thanks man.

I'm curious, because I recently went to an inert substrate, and experiencing some diatoms. I know it's not an exciting topic to discuss, but what are the key factors when changing sub?

If I remember correctly, you left some sand in the tank for biological purposes? I guess that would help avoid some diatoms, along with using RO, which may also help?

Cheers

Ah, hey Joel! Yes, I left just a little bit, but not enough to ever be noticed when the substrate gets mixed around with planting and gravel vacuuming.

Every time I’ve swapped, I will go through the usual algae phases but it’s much much shorter time wise. The filter media and the plants seemed to handle any spikes fine.  However, one swap to Landen did spike ammonia like you would expect it to, but also for a shorter time.

With the inert swaps, I just monitor for any funny business but keep up my same old routine. That 6 to 8 month period where the tank is maturing will still be an issue while the bacteria colonize.

Pulled the Trip wall out. The core reason was it was taking up too much space. I was running into just a background and foreground look in the tank. I also did a big and needed trim with a few adjustments.
