Hello fishkeepers, I need some help diagnosing a problem with a Rainbow fish (see photos for clarification). One day I noticed that it had a scratch on his side from roughly his dorsal fin to his mid-section. I originally though he scratched it on a decoration or something. I kept and eye on it for about a week, but it wasn't getting any better, so I put it in a hospital tank where it's been for a couple weeks now. It is currently going through a treatment of ParaCleanse and Maracyn, but it doesn't appear to be getting any better. In fact, I've noticed that one gill is now visibly redder than the other. It is still eating and haven't noticed any other changes with it's behavior. He's still eating well and it doesn't seem to be bother by it. Any ideas what this could be and how to treat it? Hello all, I'm in the process of setting up a 20 gallon tank for shell dwellers (multis) and saw two products at my LFS; Cichlid Lake Salt and Tanganyika Buffer. I recently read the the Co-op's article on shell dwellers and it mentions using Wonder shells or Equilibrium to raise GH, but doesn't mention these two products. I'm also using CaribSea's African Cichlid Mix as a substrate. My questions for those of you who care for African Cichlids are: do you use these two products? Any reviews? Are they really necessary? Hey everyone, I recently noticed that one of my columbian red/blue tetras has black spots sprinkled over its body (see pics). It also appears to have a growth on its eye, too. I've been doing some research and according to aquariumscience.org, Black spot disease is typically caused by the larvae of parasitic digenetic flukes of the genus Neascus (Cercaria and Metacercaria). It is called diplopstomiasis. The larval flukes burrow into the skin of a fish, causing the formation of a cyst. The term “Black Spot” refers to the formation of black pigmented patches in the muscle and skin around which the parasite lives. Infested fish exhibit black, slightly raised nodules in the skin which are often less than 1 mm in diameter (the size of a grain of salt). Again, according to aquariumscience.org, Black spot is cured by Praziquantel but treatment really isn’t necessary. The disease tends to be self limiting and typically will just go away on its own with time. Anyone ever deal with Black spot? Does this look like black spot and if so, did you let it run it's course or did you treat it? I've already quarantined the fish in a hospital tank, so I'm gonna give it a go with some PraziPro. Any advice about the Black spot or his eye is welcome. Thanks!

Hello everyone. I have two large Amazon Swords (see pics) that have holes in the leaves. I can't tell if it's a nutrient deficiency or if something in the tank is eating them. I use root tabs and liquid ferts, so I don't think it's a nutrient deficiency. The fish I have in the tank that could potentially be eating them are a single Bristle-nosed Pleco, a couple Panda Garras and a couple of Buenos Aires Tetras. I didn't think that the Bristle nose would eat a healthy sword, especially if it has plenty of drift wood to munch on. I know that the B.A. Tetras will sometimes eat plants, but I've never seen them do it and I keep them well fed. As far as the Panda Garras go, I didn't think they ate live plants, either. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I have three 10 gallon tanks I use for either hospital tanks or QT. I don't have anything in them, no plants, no fish, no substrate. Okay, there is a lava rock in one of them. I use a sponge filter in each. Can someone please tell me what that brown stuff is that collects at the bottom? I vac it out and fill with fresh water, but it comes back in about a day. What is it and is there a way to prevent it? Thanks, Jay

@Brandy No, the school in the 45 gallon is completely different batch from the two batches in the 90 gallon. I just must have gotten a couple bad batches. Oh well, the show must go on. Thanks for the advice.

For the most part, I bought them in two batches. They all went through a quarantine period in a separate QT tank and were all treated with the Aquarium Coop med trio. I'd guess I've had them all for about two months now.

S.O.S.! Over the last week my Neon Tetras have been dying off steadily and I can't figure out why. I started with a nice school of about 25 and now I'm down to the last three or four. They're in a 90 gallon planted tank with all community fish, mostly tetras, livebearers, corys, etc. My water parameters have been pretty steady at: PH = 7.9 (I know this is a bit high as they like more acidic water, but see the kicker below) Nitrates = between ~5 ppm Nitrite = 0 Ammonia = 0 Hardness = 140-160 (Moderate Hardness) KH/Buffer = 55-70 (on the low side, but I don't have big swings in PH) Water Temperature 77-78F Here's the kicker! I have a 45 gallon, planted, community tank with pretty much the same water parameters and my Neons are thriving in there. I just can't figure it out. They look healthy, too. No visible signs of disease or fungus or parasites. So frustrating. Any help is appreciated. Oh, and yes, I do regular water changes and use Prime to dechlorinate.

How do you spec an air pump? I just took advantage of Petco's dollar per gallon sale today and bought three more tanks, a 20L and two 10s. I plan to run sponge filters in these three new tanks and in a 10 I already have, but want to run them all on a single air pump. What size air pump would I need? Thanks!

Update: she passed. She was definitely preggo. I gave her a little squeeze after death and at least 19 dead fry popped out. Thanks for the responses. Poor little girl. RIP.

Is this poor girl having a difficult pregnancy or is something eating her from the inside? She's been plump for a while and the other fish have been chasing her, so I put her in the quarantine tank so nothing could bother her. All water parameters are good and stable.

The only other thing I can think of is too much light? I have a 90g tank with a Stingray 2 LED. The light is on a timer from 11 am to 9 pm. I don't have a par meter so I have no idea if they are getting too much light and getting "burnt" out.

About six or seven weeks. I thought it might be melt, but my swords have already melted and have come back. I thought that ferns weren't supposed to melt as bad as swords, so I didn't think is was melt. I'll give it more time to see if they bounce back. Thanks for the reply.

Can anyone diagnose this issue? I have some Windelov Java Ferns that don't seem to be doing well (see pics). The leaves have black blotches (not spots, but large blotches). I use Easy Green and recently started using Easy Iron, too. I dose in accordance with Aquarium Coop recommendations. I've even started to add a little bit more, just in case. My research tells me that it's a potassium deficiency, but wouldn't they get enough from the two ferts I'm already using or should I supplement with something like Flourish Potassium? Both plants in the pictures are attached to driftwood and not planted in the substrate. Thanks!

Quick question regarding a quarantine tank and the med-trio. I have a batch of fish ready to go into their permanent tank (QT period is over) and a new batch fresh from the LFS ready to go into the QT tank. Can I put the new fish in the QT tank (along with a new dose of the med trio) or should I do a complete water change first, then add new meds, then add the fish? Thanks,

I have a Platinum Guppy that I though was dying for the past few days. I put it back in the hospital/quarantine tank with the Aquarium Coop med trio. It's been lying on the bottom of the tank or stuck in a plant for a few days now. I just put food in the tank to feed all the fish in there and it "came alive," darted to the top of the tank to get some food, and then sank to the bottom again. Now it's back in the plant again, just lying still. Is this indicative of a swim bladder problem? I'm lost as to what to do. Thanks.
