  1. ah, okay, thank you, I'm trying to help my snails live their best life 🙂 (and someday shrimp)
  2. Are they of any benefit? If yes do they only help under certain conditions? I'm skeptical since I don't see many mentions of them here
  3. I see tons of guides for temperature pH kh etc. Some are very different. Some are similar to others. What source/website do you trust for such info?
  4. Thanks. Using sponge filters so would have to look into that. I'm planning a significant water change this weekend so I'll get rid of some at least
  5. I added Imagitarium algae reducer to the tank a week ago and a second dose a day later for a HAIRY green hair algae explosion. I had planned to get a few shrimp and a snail, but the algae reducer is not safe for snails so that has been on hold. Do I need to work several water changes before I can think about getting a snail? I regret using the stuff now but boy it was ugly in there. I can find no info online about the duration of the chemical. The label says poly (oxyethelene) (dimethyliminio) ethylene (dimethyliminio) ethylene dichloride (that's a nightmare to type I hope I got it right).
  6. Thanks. I am not breeding Kronos. I thought cancer until it ballooned. Compare to the size it was in October:
  7. Common pleco. Has had a cluster of lumps (same color as skin, black) for close to a year. They grew slowly so I thought cancer, nothing to do about that. Just yesterday in less than a day part of the mass BALLOONED. Mostly clear but at the bottom looks like a speck of blood. Some lumps look bigger than they were a week ago. So maybe a virus, again not much to do except maintain water quality to avoid infection. But could it be something else? He is currently alone in there but a betta was with him until a week ago. If it could be a parasite or something I may need to treat both fish. Help? GH 120 KH 40 Ph 7 NO2 0 NO3 10 Temp 78
  8. Thanks. Ammonia is 0 btw. How long before he regains color on the affected fin?
  9. It's mid-70s. I will see if I still have an ammonia test.
  10. And parameters (soft water here, I'm working on it): GH 60, KH 40, Ph 7, zero nitrites zero nitrates His color other than the affected fin is still gorgeous. Behavior: He was much more sociable a few weeks ago. Some days he's still coming right out for breakfast. Most of the time he stays by the sponge filter or in this little sort of nest he has in the pothos roots. I often feed him in the hole in the top of the floating log and I do see him going in there now and then, he seems to be checking for food. He will only eat pellets and frozen brine shrimp, he gets the latter once a week on Wednesdays. Last Wed. he went after them in his normal (aggressive) way.
  11. I had to coax him out. It's his right fin. Pectoral. No longer fuzzy.
  12. My Betta had a cottony white spot on one fin. One week ago i followed the regimen 1 packet of Maracyn and 1 tsp of Ich-X per 10 gallons of water. The fuzz is gone. But the fin has not regained color. This sounds "cured" to me because the fin has been damaged by the fungus (presumably) but can anyone tell me if this is ok? Should I dose again?
  13. I have tried that. Sometimes he eats them and sometimes he ignores.
  14. I've decided to keep a 5.5 gal tank running permanently to quarantine plants (my pleco is an asshole and eats all my plants so I am replacing them regularly). I'm looking for any suggestions of living things I can keep in there since I have to look at it. I was thinking shrimp but I really like fish. I have a new female betta in there at the moment, but she should be moving to the big tank in another week if she continues to look healthy. She has also taken care of the stowaway snails that came with my red root floaters. What a girl! (And if by the way you can recommend any plants the pleco won't eat, it will be appreciated.)
  15. When you say "some," how many fish are you talking about? As far as a quarantine tank goes, if you're regularly purchasing new fish you might want to set up a 5 gallon and keep it running permanently so it's always ready. I'm keeping one running strictly because I buy a lot of plants and they almost always bring in snails, but I have a new betta girl in there now quarantining, she also is taking care of the snail problem lol.
  16. I don't have any prepared but was wondering for the future. I don't trust that mixing the powders would evenly distribute them, so I did not do that. Thanks.
  17. I don't have a lot of space to quarantine fish. Last time I got a new one I mixed up the med trio, put only the two gallons or so I needed in, and poured the rest down the sink. Has anyone mixed up a full batch and stored some in buckets or jugs for future use? I hate wasting so much of it.
  18. He looks great. Comes to the glass when someone's nearby, exploring his little world. We've started feeding him a pellet or two every day and he hits those as soon as he sees them.
  19. He has been in the med trio concoction for eight days, I did the first water change last night. I'm concerned about the slow changes because I had to add water on day 6 (yes that diluted it slightly) because the nitrite level was 0.5 and it was too early to start water changes. All other levels were fine. I'll just keep watching the levels. What I don't understand (I read the blog first) is if the gradual water changes are necessary as a precaution in case some infection or whatever emerges over the second week or if removing the meds too quickly could harm the fish in some way. Would love to know the answer to that.
  20. Isn't that what I'm supposed to be doing with the daily water changes? I admit I'm not clear on why the water changes are so slow.
  21. I have a new betta in quarantine tank with the med trio. Tomorrow I start water changes. Can/should I also add a carbon filter?
  22. I only have a pleco in the tank, he's still looking fine. I had mollies in there, all healthy, but they wouldn't stop birthing babies so I rehomed them. I read dropsy is caused by a bacteria that's common in tanks but only affects fish if they're stressed or otherwise weakened. I hadn't planned to do anything other than keep it clean. I did thoroughly clean the quarantine tank, though.
  23. I'm so sorry. It sounds like you did everything possible, but he just didn't have the strength.
