I’m going to dedicate these two 5.5 gal tanks to my Killi annuals project. Looks gross now… just changed lots of water, and “capped” with ActivFlora black substrate. These will settle down, the Java moss will grow, and I’ll add lots of new plants.

Most expensive… I’ll be buying two 5.5 glass lids. Not cheap!

Can you please elaborate? I’ve used polymer, but it warps badly.

Twinwall polycarbonate greenhouse sheeting.  You can get it at big box hardware for about $30.00 or less and have more than enough for several small tanks.  Comes up to 8’ long for a bit more or you can get a 4’ sheet (about 2’ wide if I remember right).  Very light but strong, but thicker than glass.  Easy to cut with a table saw or even circular saw.  Hack saw if you’re good and patient enough.  Use some tape to cover the open ends of the sheets or you can get algae growing inside between the layers.  Has great light transmission (about 85%), better than most standard window glass which is about 80%.  Command hooks work for handles.  Some people are just using tape for hinges.  Somebody posted the other day about using some strips of that new plastic post type Velcro for hinges.  Let me see if I can find those.

Here’s the strips.

That’s helpful. I’ll think about this. I do really like glass lids. They just cost so much…

I've been using scraps of Plaskolite twinwall sheeting for lids on a few of my tanks for the last year or so. Haven't had any warping but they can get some algae in the inside channels if they get wet... hasn't bothered me yet. I like that they float for a bit if I drop them in. I used a knurled thumbscrew from a scrap computer as a handle, just poked a little hole and screwed it in.

I think it's also sold as coroplast but that also comes in materials other than poly which will probably warp.

Caved. Totally caved. Too beautiful to get out of mind. I just ordered three pairs of Nothobranchious rachovii.

Males can look somewhat different, depending on genetics, age, water, etc. I'm going to give these a go and see what happens.

I've definitely dealt with a lot of high-strung aquarists, insisting that the parameters have to be "X" or "Y" and going on and on about their own philosophies.

Enough. I'm going to make my own mistakes, and find my own rhythm with these. Most Killi breeders keep stark, bare tanks. Nonsense. Fish love plants. I'm keeping mine with plants! I'll find ways for them to adapt. I do know that they'll want live foods, so I need to be very attentive to what they actually eat and don't eat.

Wish me good luck, Forum! Shipping alone will be a risk . . .

ORD😍😍😍

Be brave!!!

I think it's awesome, and you will figure out what works for you and your killis. My niece did her internship studying killis (I just found out from my sis, my niece is far too busy these days finishing up school) and she was telling her mom how the room she was in charge of gets the news from where the killis are from and they duplicate the weather.

Reminded my sis and I of before our mom died she got some cacti and subscribed to the Mesa, AZ paper to replicate the environment. I know for the cacti that was very effective.

I don't know if my niece is allowed to discuss specifics of her internship beyond monitoring the news online for a foreign country's weather report.😅

I have a budget HOB that’s to noisy for everyday use but works great as a mulm extractor on my Guppy grow out tank. I’m not going for Dean levels of clean but I like to pull out about 50-75%

I might have to give these a polishing with a HOB stuffed with filter floss.

That’s awesome! Your niece could be an expert consultant on my endeavor.

My niece is a PhD in Mathematics… so over my head… wish she’d study Killis! 😂

If I can talk to her, I'll ask all the questions.

Right now she's trying to graduate, while looking at grad school, in the middle of a pandemic. I'm proud of her for getting this far!

So I am not sure how to fully respond to all of the claims made in this video, but watched it carefully.

I did note the recommendation to try using coconut fiber in place of peat moss. I’ve already got some, so thought I’d try boiling it…

For anyone interested in watching a hot pot boil…

Now I’ll leave it sit awhile… maybe all night (after turning off, of course)…

Alrighty. Well, there’s a delay on my Nothobranchius rachovii order. Long story short… the supplier ran out. So, I’m awaiting their next delivery two weeks out. I’ve made two requests of them whilst my money sits in the ether several extra weeks awaiting fish. We shall see if they treat a first time customer well, thereby encouraging any future orders from me.

Sorry forum. I am going to vent. I do not do this normally. I'm a pretty chill person. Now, I refuse to name this business, as that would violate forum guidelines. Plus I don't want to be "that guy."

But I am going to vent.

This is an actual conversation I just had:

- Monday, you advertised 3x pairs of Nothobranchius rachovii for sale

- I ordered Monday, fish plus shipping, for $99.99

- You Confirmed shipping arrangements with me on Monday, indicating the species Rachovii Killis on the order

- Then you tried calling my shipping receiver instead of me, even though I gave you my personal cell number twice on the invoice you e-mailed back to me

- You checked on the wrong species — Pearl Killifish — and determined that they were unsuitable for sale . . . meaning that if they were, I would have received _the wrong killifish_

- And then, when you checked on the Nothobranchius rachovii that I ordered, you discovered that you were all out.

- So I have a choice: cancel the order, or wait two weeks.

- On the prospect of waiting, I made two requests: (1) instead of sending me three males and three females, can you send me two males with four females?

- You replied “No. If we sell you a trio, another customer will be unable to get their pair.”

(Which I suppose is fair play if you also mess up other customers’ orders, and make them wait for two weeks for their fish, right? I digress...)

- (2) I asked you to inquire about the genetic sourcing for your Killis, because that matters to breeders — just like pedigree papers matter to any animal breeder

- You replied that you cannot because “We receive these fish from a wholesaler, not a hobbyist, so there is no way for us to track down their origins for you.”

(But couldn’t your wholesaler inquire? I ask wholesalers about these things myself regularly.)

- I am disappointed.

- I really want to have a good business relationship here, but this is not going well.

- Is there anything you can do to help?

- You say you could offer me free shipping on _my next order_?

- No. Just no. Please cancel my order right now.

(Never. Doing. Business. With. You. Again. Ever.)
