I’ve decided to order some Nothobranchius rachovii eggs. They’ll probably just have been harvested. So… I’ll have to wait perhaps 3-5 months to try hatching them out. But here’s an adult male this strain is from…

Worth the wait, I’d say!

Meanwhile, I’ve got that lead on the N. guentheri…

So we’ll try it all!

That was the most entertaining rant I've had the pleasure of reading in a while!  Thank you for that.  I needed that today.  I too try to recognize when something I am dealing with has objectively gotten so bad it crosses the line into farcical.  Your vendor probably lives that way daily!  🤣

Probably better off getting eggs to hatch yourself or the fish from a hobbyist anyways. I was lucky enough to get a pair of N. rachovii at a local club auction last fall, and unfortunately my female passed a month or so after getting them, then I had a dummy moment and left the lid open on the tank after feeding and came down the next day to feed and do chores and I had a crispy male. Thankfully, I saved the info from the bag and have contacted the breeder and he is sending me some eggs this spring.

Sorry forum. I am going to vent. I do not do this normally. I'm a pretty chill person. Now, I refuse to name this business, as that would violate forum guidelines. Plus I don't want to be "that guy."

But I am going to vent.

This is an actual conversation I just had:

- Monday, you advertised 3x pairs of Nothobranchius rachovii for sale

- I ordered Monday, fish plus shipping, for $99.99

- You Confirmed shipping arrangements with me on Monday, indicating the species Rachovii Killis on the order

- Then you tried calling my shipping receiver instead of me, even though I gave you my personal cell number twice on the invoice you e-mailed back to me

- You checked on the wrong species — Pearl Killifish — and determined that they were unsuitable for sale . . . meaning that if they were, I would have received _the wrong killifish_

- And then, when you checked on the Nothobranchius rachovii that I ordered, you discovered that you were all out.

- So I have a choice: cancel the order, or wait two weeks.

- On the prospect of waiting, I made two requests: (1) instead of sending me three males and three females, can you send me two males with four females?

- You replied “No. If we sell you a trio, another customer will be unable to get their pair.”

(Which I suppose is fair play if you also mess up other customers’ orders, and make them wait for two weeks for their fish, right? I digress...)

- (2) I asked you to inquire about the genetic sourcing for your Killis, because that matters to breeders — just like pedigree papers matter to any animal breeder

- You replied that you cannot because “We receive these fish from a wholesaler, not a hobbyist, so there is no way for us to track down their origins for you.”

(But couldn’t your wholesaler inquire? I ask wholesalers about these things myself regularly.)

- I am disappointed.

- I really want to have a good business relationship here, but this is not going well.

- Is there anything you can do to help?

- You say you could offer me free shipping on _my next order_?

- No. Just no. Please cancel my order right now.

(Never. Doing. Business. With. You. Again. Ever.)

If they are getting wholesale, there is a very low chance that they are getting exactly pairs or that exactly pairs are surviving considering a 10-20% loss is pretty much considered standard after any shipping.  I call BS and I’m glad you aren’t going to be giving them any business.

I am very glad you’re going for both species!  I so hoped you would!  I’m also very impressed by the pics.  Stunning colors!

Well! Exciting week. Got Blue Nothos eggs by mail. Will need to wait 4-5 months before hatching them out.

But I also exchanged some F. Scheeli for a trio of Nothobranchius guentheri, the Redtail Notho. These Killis are so tiny — head-to-tail, no longer than my thumb nail is wide.

This is an “aquarium strain” — meaning, hopefully, they’ll do well here given proper TLC.

Introducing…

Pretty little things!  Are they already at full color?

Well, I think they will grow a bit larger. I'd say no. The male definitely should develop much more color. I'd venture to guess they can grow twice this size. But it's my first time working with them, so I really don't know!

Well I wish you luck on breeding the Notho's. I am currently keeping F. Gardneri Makurdi. Once I move into a house, I plan on increasing my collection of killies.

Thanks! I’ll share my failings and successes here, for sure. Always learning.

Surprise find today in the N. Guentheri breeding tank. There were a few fry. Can’t be Nothos — their eggs require a drying period. I assess these are F. Scheeli fry hatched out from the substrate, since this was previously a F. Scheeli breeding tank. Really freaked me out at first!

Caught my Nothobranchius guentheri spawning this morning. The breeder I got them from said “They spawn in the morning. Then all the rest of the day, the male just harasses the females.” I’ll be changing out the dish later today. It’s been a few weeks. This context is coconut fiber… probably not ideal. I’ll be using proper peat moss next.

  • 5 weeks later...

Exciting day!! I’ve found Nothobranchius guentheri eggs a-plenty in my coconut fiber media.

short story long…

(1) My 10 gal breeding tank cracked, flooding my fishroom 🥴

(2) I pulled the spawning container, poured excess water off top, and poured out into a container with paper towels under and on top to absorb moisture…

(3) Today, i checked the media, and behold!

(4) Now I let it air dry some more, then carefully label a zip lock bag (species / date bagged / 8-weeks when they can be hatched out)

(5) I place this inside a small styro in a warm upstairs room of my house (bathroom back shelf)

Can’t wait til June!!!
