DIY mats for rimless tanks

I'm trying to find the best budget mat to go under a rimless tank I made. It's only a 17 gallon.

I have some 5mm cork on hand and I have read that cork can be used for tank mat but I haven't seen anyone do it before. Would this work? Anyone have experience with cork mats?

I'm trying to do this tank on a budget so I'd be happy to hear suggestions for other low cost mat options. (I'm not cutting up my yoga mat!)

Yes! I have been thinking about that too. Joanns sells large sheets of EVA foam in different thicknesses. Joanns plays the coupon game though and I will get that if I can get a 50% off coupon for it. (I sew and have some issues with Joanns pricing scheme).

Followup: I ended up using the thin craft foam. I didn't originally consider that option but Cory thought it would work and it's super cheap, so I gave it a go. The tank had been up for about 4 months. I think this was an OK solution for a small tank on a good surface.
