Amanda
I'm trying to find the best budget mat to go under a rimless tank I made. It's only a 17 gallon. I have some 5mm cork on hand and I have read that cork can be used for tank mat but I haven't seen anyone do it before. Would this work? Anyone have experience with cork mats? I'm trying to do this tank on a budget so I'd be happy to hear suggestions for other low cost mat options. (I'm not cutting up my yoga mat!) Administrators Cory Posted October 8, 2020 Administrators Share Posted October 8, 2020 I always thought about trying the stuff that looks like construction paper but is foam used in craft projects. It feel so similar to rimless tank mats.
Amanda
Yes! I have been thinking about that too. Joanns sells large sheets of EVA foam in different thicknesses. Joanns plays the coupon game though and I will get that if I can get a 50% off coupon for it. (I sew and have some issues with Joanns pricing scheme). RyanR
What came with my Aqueon 14 gal rimless cube was what seems like just a piece of felt. It's not very thick.
MickS77
You could try finding a large enough mouse pad on Amazon. I feel like that material would work nicely. "Mouse pad material" being Neoprene. Edited October 8, 2020 by MickS77
Daniel
I have used this It can be pretty thin and support the rimless tank just fine.
MattyIce
I use 1 inch poly shield, it’s about 15$ for a 4’ x 8’ sheet. cut it slightly larger and cover the edges with duct tape to look nice
nancyjoshua
I am also using it to.
Jason A.
you could also check out 5 and below if you have one local, it's like a dollar tree store except things are $5 or less and they have yoga mats I think would work well for what you need
Amanda
Followup: I ended up using the thin craft foam. I didn't originally consider that option but Cory thought it would work and it's super cheap, so I gave it a go. The tank had been up for about 4 months. I think this was an OK solution for a small tank on a good surface.
