Chick-In-Of-TheSea
@sweetpoisonCheck out https://aqadvisor.com/ to double check stocking levels based on your tank size and filtration. It's a pretty handy tool. 🙂 Edited June 8, 2022 by Chick-In-Of-TheSea

But I really want rainbow shiners first. I have a 20 gallon long so probably can’t get any more than 10 right? I’m putting them with Rummynose Tetras if you think that’s a good fit. Because I’m going to get 24 of each and nothing else for a while a long while. My only caution would be temperature. Shiners can go very cold. They can do alright up into the low 70s. But I think Rummynose tend to need warmer tropical temperatures. 1
sweetpoison
Oh that’s horrible news! So You’re saying I should have a tank just for The shiners?

Chick-In-Of-TheSea
You're not "buying another tank", you're "resolving an issue" with different fish temperatures. 😉 1
SandBkeeper
Question: How many tanks do you think one would need if they wanted to breed GBRs? I love them and it would be super cool to breed them in the future.

Plus, parents often eat fry or fight with each other. So my suggestion would be: go for 2x 20-gal long aquariums. You can do a lot with those!

Georgiapeach88
I stumbled upon your journal on accident and I’m in love with all your info and photos. I just got my big German blue boy into my 36g community tank today after qt him. At least I’m pretty sure it’s a boy.. He’s making himself right at home. Need to find him some lady friends as I had gotten several for him and they were sick with something and sadly passed. I’m still learning how to sex them at my lfs as I thought I had multiple females a while back for him and ended up with two being males. That was a fun mess. They played there colors so much like pink bellied females it took me a bit to figure out I had more males than females.🤦♀️. Better pics.. thoughts on sexing this GBR.

SandBkeeper
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought it was females that didn't have solid black spots? If so, isn't that GBR a female not a male? Edited June 25, 2022 by SandBkeeper typos

When I got this one with 3 others I swore I had all females at store and the store I visit had experienced gbr keepers. So we were pretty certain. But man oh man has it been hard to figure out the males from females On 6/25/2022 at 6:35 PM, SandBkeeper said: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought it was females that didn't have solid black spots? But other times I thought male it’s been so hard to determine for me a first time GBR keeper

Here’s a male from the batch of fry that kicked off this journal… Absolutely zero photo editing. Yes, they do get purple fins. So males can or can’t have blue speckles inside black dot I’m so confused 😂🤦♀️

Georgiapeach88
@Fish Folk Any specific advice for picking a juvenile male from my lfs. As they aren’t necessarily as easy to sex. Are they to picky to just pick a male and place him with her to couple up. or are they better to do the group thing and let them pair off

If she’s a bit larger than the male, a pairing might not form.

Yeah that’s gonna be the hard part might have to raise him up a bit separate to get him to size they are usually quarter size at lfs if not smaller.

Fish Folk
Moved young GBRs in with Discus. They grow faster with higher heat and better quality foods. Here’s a few shots… Here’s my last of the original batch that were spawned last summer. Beautiful female… 1
