This morning, after a “fasting day” I’ve checked in on the Ram pair. They’re looking good.

I’ve turned down the flow on the HOB to encourage more searching out a suitable spawning location in the tank.

It may be that they will need a more closed-off / isolated spot — such as a small terra cotta pot might offer.

It’s time for a huge feast of baby brine shrimp. I hatch these out daily in our little fishroom. I’ve made a small bbs hatchery black-box with a small LED on constantly inside.

The hatch is looking good.

So here goes . . . an overfeeding!

Complain away internet. Overfeed + Over-waterchange = spawning. Clean water is key, but so is roe and milt development. You shouldn’t, in general, overfeed your fish. But when stimulating breeding, it is important that they’re full while also in clean environment.

Once mature and comfortable, Rams can spawn every few weeks.

One last touch... cranking up temperature a few degrees from 80° F to ca. 83° F.

They are a gorgeous pair. Congrats on spawn and wigglers. I will be following clot as my mom and I are thinking of getting GBR for our 36g bowfront after we redo somethings. Currently it’s a corydora haven.

Awesome! One day I will be up for making it to your fish club!

The next trip I plan to make to PVAS will probably be March 5th. Dr. Ted Coletti is the guest presenter -- outdoor tubbing! I am so excited to learn from him. You do not have to be a member to attend.

I’d say these fry are now at or past the beauty of their parents. Here’s a shot of a male and female from the Discus tank this morning.

Several notes: the female has a darker spot than others. Also, the overall coloration renders these Rams a bit like healthy Bolivians. Diet and lighting are more at cause than anything else.

They look amazing!

Ive heard variations and not sure when it comes to breeding especially GBR. Do/ will you introduce a male/ female from a different breeder into the mix? Does it matter if the fry reproduce together? Or would this be the place to introduce new lines?

I would have to believe adding new lines would be best option but how to keep a new trait? I’m gonna do some research on all this and I would very much appreciate your opinion.

I think most fish are good for a few generations of inbreeding without developing too many problems. The parents of these (now adult) first batch of fry from last summer were _not_ siblings, so these tiny fry are 2x generations in. I could probably go another without too many problems. I think with livebearers at least, you can go 5x deep before crossing out. Other breeders may well be more strict.

Personally, I'll let these grow and see what they look like. If they're fine, I'll buy new Rams to cross with them.
