  1. You can treat any plant with reverse respiration and make them snail free.
  2. I have had tons of different species of gourami and the type I've found with the most personality is thick-lipped (often labeled "red honey gourami"). I just lost my favorite one ever a few days ago. He would regularly greet me, follow me, and do little dances. He was special. I've had 7 different thick-lipped and he was the most special of all of them but they were all more interesting personality wise than any other gourami I've had. In a 75 you could easily get 5-6 or even more because they don't get too big. Another idea is a pearl gourami. In my experience they were really shy and hid all of the time but I've heard others have a different experience.
  3. They will breed and lay eggs and the eggs occasionally even hatch but the larvae will not survive in freshwater. Free fish food though!! I kind of had fun watching the eggs turn darker then black then my guppies one day would be swarming around the egg in a feeding frenzy. The larvae are too small for us to see but I could tell what was going on lol.
  4. My favorite fish, Fred, died 2 days ago so I went to my LFS and got his replacement. A young thicklipped gourami. No name yet. He has to earn a name!!
  5. Tbh this seems like 2 different directions at the same time. White clouds like colder temps. Hillstreams and panda cories can go colder or warmer. Furcata however like it warmer. Then with cherry shrimp I don't think they will survive in that tank at all. Personally, I think you have 2 decisions to make: 1. Either furcata or white clouds but not both. This will dircate which temp you go with the tank. 2. A different cleaner. What temp you pick can help with this decision a bit. I would suggest either a snail (mystery + nerite is a good combo or there are many other options) or amano shrimp since they get larger. I had a pretty similar tank to what you've described in the past and tbh still have it pretty similar. I had furcata, thick-lipped gourami, panda cories, hillstream loaches, 2 otos, mystery and nerite snails. Currently that stocking is slightly different and is luminatus, thick-lipped gourami, panda cories, hillstream loaches, otos and amano shrimp.
  6. Trios are great for most species. I was confusing it with a conversation about all male guppies. I'm sorry haha.
  7. Oh, I'll be honest, I got confused with a different post. You are right. I'm dumb.
  8. 3 males is the worst number you can have in terms of aggression because 2 of them end up ganging up on 1. 5 is really the minimum number for dealing with aggression in guppies. 3 females would mean fry since they hold sperm. I'm not saying it would never work as anything is possible but when talking about the most likely scenario.
  9. This may have won me over! What I am going to miss the most about Fred is his personality. He was so interactive!!
  10. I'll be honest I don't know a lot about kribs so im reading some articles now. One concern about fish that enjoy caves is how often I will see them. Do they hide a lot? Oh I responded the same time as you. Maybe someone else can answer that.
  11. That's a good point about water hardness. I forgot that's why I had never gotten one in the past. I've had pearl gouramis in the past, I forgot to add that to the list, but I ended up rehoming them because I didn't feel the tank was large enough for them. I hadn't thought of kribs. Maybe I'll look into that more.
  12. Awhile back i made a post where I made a back story for my thick-lipped gourami pair. Sally died awhile ago. Fred died today. I already miss him. I have had 16 individual gourami and 5 different thick-lipped gourami and he is by far my favorite I've had. He was so interactive. I'm not sure exactly how he died but I have a few things I suspect. It was very sudden and unexpected. Now I'm considering what, if anything, to replace him with. The tank is already very full I will admit but I do like the idea of a centerpiece fish. I love gourami and thick-lipped is my favorite of all gourami but I'm also considering trying something new. I'd like some suggestions. 29-gallon: panda cories, 10 green neon tetras, 8 pseudomugil luminatus, 2 honey gourami (considering moving or rehoming if needed). Water is 7.6 PH, 14 GH Things I have had in the past so wouldn't be new: female betta, male betta, honey gourami, thick-lipped gourami, dwarf gourami, sparkling gourami Would a ram maybe work? Would apistos be too aggressive? I've never had any cichlid ever period.
  13. That reminded me of another i suggest often for small tanks because they aren't very active. Ember tetras. They are super pretty too.
  14. I do not suggest guppies in a 5 gallon at all. They are highly active fish and therefore need space to move around. They also reproduce very quickly if you get any females. If you get males you have to deal with setting up the tank properly to avoid aggression or they will kill each other. One of the things required to deal with aggression is space. Chili rasbora are a fish you could have multiple of in this tank though. Shrimp or snails are always a solid option as well. I found this video and it has some really amazing suggestions:
  15. During those 2 weeks before you added fish, what did you do with the tank? Was it set up? Did you add fish food or ammonia? Do you know the exact readings the fish store got when they tested it? I'll be honest, I'm very skeptical of trusting any fish store that tells someone their water levels are fine. Some employees know what they are doing but most do not. Have you read up about the nitrogen cycle? I know there is a ton to learn all at once but this is the most important topic and is the center of all of fish keeping. In case you haven't, here is a video to get you started:
  16. To get some tannins out I suggest first doing a water change and then running some activated carbon in your filter. It's most likely that if the ammonia had been going down that it is still down but I can understand the desire to confirm this.
  17. Almost all snails will eat algae wafers. It's just a majority of nerites do not. Algae wafers are a good option for other species of snails though.
  18. As long as it's the GEL kind then yes gorilla glue is safe long term. I made one awhile back. I doubt I can find it but I'll look and take a pic if I do find it.
  19. Crab cuisine is my go-to for any snail other than nerites. You can make a platform the mystery snails can get to but the fish can't out of a cheap soap dish and a suction cup using gorilla glue gel. I used to do that for mine. Or you can also try feeding at night when the mystery snails are looking to graze although that method doesn't always work either. Yeah cholla technically isn't a wood but the inside of a cactus so it doesn't have all the same properties as wood does. They typically come in small rounds.
  20. Picky snails is specific to nerites since they are all wild ccaught. It's a common problem although not all have this issue. The water movement from the HOB should be enough yes however sometimes things get in the way. If the water level is low, that reduces the effectiveness of the HOB filter and surface movement. They literally eat the driftwood. cholla is their favorite. Not all nerites accept algae wafers infact most do not and those who don't will eat driftwood. Also cholla wood does not turn your water brown or take up much space.
  21. Mystery snails also love duckweed. It's one of the plants they will eat before it dies including hornwort and java fern. I will say though, since they can't swim in the middle and rely on sucking in the duckweed near the edges, I would never rely on mystery snails to help anyone get rid of duckweed. I have heard of people drying it out and feeding it to their mystery snails though. I tried it once and I made a mess lol.
  22. Hey! Welcome to the forums! First of all, I highly doubt the wonder shells are the cause of your issues here. It's impossible to overdose on the wonder shells. If there is enough calcium in the water, they just dissolve slower or not at all. Secondly, yes, it's correct that mystery snails at the top is a sign of low oxygen. It could also he a sign of another water quality issue. Mystery snails have both gills and lungs. When they are unable to get oxygen from the water, they will go to the waterline and get some from the air above the water. What kind of filter(s) are you running? How long until they have been cleaned? Do you run an air stone? In regards to the nerite snail, I doubt it died of old age. Nerites can easily live over 5 years. There are 2 other more likely possibilities: All nerite snails are wild caught. They are found in brackish water and not bred in captivity like mystery snails. Because of this, often some do not adjust to captive life and don't make it. I have had over 25 different species of nerites and almost all are pretty iffy for the first month or 2. After that they seem to be in the clear. The 2nd possible issue is food. Like you said, feeding nerites can be difficult. Some will accept commercial foods and veggies but not many. Often what ends up happening is they do such a good job cleaning the algae for you that there is none left for then to eat. In these cases I suggest people supply them with driftwood. Cholla wood seems to be a favorite of theirs but you can try others as well.
  23. I know every setup is different. In my cory breeding I basically have 3 tanks. One is adults or any younger keepers and where I pull the eggs from. Another is where they hatch and grow a bit. Then I graduate them to a juvenile tank. Is it strange I often get the graduation song in my head while moving them from the fry to the juvenile tanks?
  24. I got this cabomba in the mail about 3 days ago. I saw no roots so I started floating it in a tank that is currently struggling with high nitrates. The tank has not been getting liquid fert since battling the nitrate for now. The ends are looking to be rotting and the stems are breaking. Am I doing it wrong?
