  1. @xXInkedPhoenixX I think why some people think cats are hard to train is because many people treat them like dogs and they aren't! I have trained all my cats to do tricks and such. I have also learned that it's important when you say no to also say yes just like your kitchen example! "No you can't be on the counter but yes you can sit on the pot holder." I fell hard in love with this kitten from day one when she fell asleep all night on my shoulder. I've always wanted a ragdoll but never wanted to buy one so when I found a half-raggie litter that was needing homes I had to have her! The fish have been a good learning for boundaries for her too. It's been great.
  2. She definitely keeps me on my toes! I've had cats before but always adopted them as adults and this is my first kitten. It's a different experience than I expected, surprisingly less work than I expected, but im loving it. She likes to help with all the fish duties. Always there when I feed or do water changes. She's gotten to a point where she knows where the line is and i don't have to hold her back for the safety of the fish.
  3. I know this is a common issue or source of entertainment for those with both pets. My 7 month old half-ragdoll kitten has a water obsession so there doesn't even need to be fish in the tank. Recently I was setting up a new tank and discovered she even loves them before ANYTHING is in the tank. Here's a picture of that along with others of her with tanks. Anyone else have fun or maybe scary stories with cats and tanks? Any pics?
  4. My PH has been steady at 8.2 which is what my tap is. I have been told a steady PH is better than chasing a PH. I am currently keeping 6 glo tetras and 3 guppies (eventually 3 become more) in a 29 gallon and considering adding panda corys. PH wise would it make sense to add driftwood to help lower the PH? Aesthetics aside would it help my tank? If so, should I trust buying driftwood on Amazon? What should I look for or avoid when looking for some that is safe for my tank?
  5. Yeah almost immediately after posting I thought exactly what you said. It's probably best for me to start cheap and colony breed. If I wanna get more into it I can later but one step at a time. I think you solidified it for me that it's probably the best step lol
  6. Hey all, I'm wanting to dive into the world of guppy breeding but wanting as much information as possible before I do so. I have done a TON of research so far but I know questions always come up. I know guppies are probably one of the easiest species to breed, but I'm hoping to make, what for me, is a large investment. I'm low income so doing fish as a hobby is kinda difficult funds wise for fish that cost $3 but I'm hoping to invest in some more expensive fish for breeding purposes. For the record, I do have a couple of sources to home fry. I guess the first thing I would like to know is if you even recommend me diving into buying a fancy trio or practicing on some cheap ones from my LFS. I see benefits both ways. The one concern I have for practicing on cheap ones is I would feel bad rehoming them once I decide to make the switch. Either way I'm finding I feel uneasy about pinning down a sure plan for the method I will do this. At first I thought about just letting them do their thing their own way, but I would like more control. I don't want a huge operation with a huge amount of tanks and getting into making my own strains or anything like that. Just breed some for my own enjoyment and a small side hussle. Currently I have 29, 10, and 5 gallon tanks as long as a breeder box I just ordered. I regularly check fb marketplace for possible good deals on tanks but I have limited space and funds. I guess ultimately what I would like is someone to bounce questions off regularly to guide me a little. At least in the beginning. Maybe I'm over thinking this. Maybe I'm under thinking it. Idk. But I wanna do it right. What would you recommend I do going forward? Start cheap or dive right in? How would you organize breeding and fry with the resources I have? Would you do it at all with the resources I have? I'm new to the forums but I think i saw a place for private messages. Anyone willing to help guide me a bit feel free to private message me.
  7. After I get my 29 gallon situated I plan on working on my 10. Heavily considering panda Corys with a betta. Aqadvisor says I could even add neon tetras to that but I'm wary of the betta getting upset with too many roommates.
  8. First of all I have to say that I have posted a couple of times here, I'm so happy my friend suggested this forum! After experiencing Facebook groups, it's a relief to have a place to bounce off ideas and get suggestions without unneeded drama! Now for the next step in my learning! 1 month into this hobby and I've already gone from a 5 to a 10 to now a 29 gallon! Watch for me world, soon imma have a 300! Ok maybe not cause I'm in an apartment but aaaaanyway. I'm not much of an aquascaper as you can see but here's my start. Goals for this tank is for glow tetras and a breeding trio of guppies therefore a growing guppy population. I know the tetras will eat fry, but that will help with population control! I don't have plans for live plants other than that I currently have 2.5 (half because some broke off) marimo moss balls. Considering doing floating plants or possibly others in the future but I'm not completely convinced. So....questions are: 1. Should I add more substrate? I have another 10 pound bag. 20 pounds is in there currently. I'm undecided if it needs more or if I should just use that bag in my 10 gallon. 2. I know the aquascaping isn't amazing but is it passable? Does it fit my goals for the fish? I do have some more colorful fake plants in the 10 I can add. I literally just threw this together to have a place to start. 3. How heavily should I consider more plants than easy moss balls? The moss balls did help A TON in the 10 gallon, and I have more on the way, but I know they will have less effect in a 29. Plus I know floating plants would help fry hide. 4. I've checked and double and tripled checked my plan for the fish makes sense but it never hurts to get more opinions. My LFS will take overflow fry so I'm not concerned about being over run, but is it too much for a beginner to jump into breeding? I'm told guppy breeding is cake and I have a 5 gallon if needed for raising fry. 5. I haven't yet set up the filter and heater. I noticed the heater looks a lot smaller than the one I've been using for my 10. It's 100 watts. Is that enough? I have multiple HOB filters was was thinking about running 2 together. However I don't think there is enough space on the hood. Is it worth it to drill an opening in the hood to fit 2? 6. Anything else I didn't think of, feel free to add! I know this is a step by step process and everything doesn't come at once. It's good to have some heads up on the processes. Again, I'm so I love with this forum! You guys are the best! I love constantly improving my knowledge and skills!
  9. I did find someone to sell me a used stand designed for a 29 because trying either of these furniture items makes me nervous. It looks ugly but I figure it's probably safer. If it was a 20 or less I might not worry as much.
  10. I have been doing a fish-in cycle for 3 weeks now. Just now I noticed one of the 2 HOB filters I have running (aqua-tech 10-20) has water falling out the wrong side. I also noticed the out has much less flow than usual. I even usually attach a cut water bottle to the end. This is my first 3 weeks ever with fish. I assume I need to clean the filter cartridge and that is causing a backup of water. What worries me is losing much needed bacteria during a fish-in cycle. Sorry the pics might not help the best. I tried to attach a video but couldn't. Is that what's wrong with the filter? What's my best course of action?
  11. Hey, so I'm very new to fish. I just got a new 29 gallon aquarium. I realized the table I was originally going to put it on will not hold it. I am considering other pieces of furniture but it has me nervous now. Do I need to purchase a stand made for the tank or will a piece of furniture work? Any advice as to what to look for in said furniture? I have included a pic of 2 pieces of furniture I currently have and am considering. One is currently holding my 5 gallon. Excuse the mess around them lol. I have seen other options on marketplace but I want to make sure it's going to work. Ty
  12. Ty! Now I just need to find a self-help forum for my new aquarium addiction haha
  13. Cory cats is exactly what I was thinking of adding to them if the guppies didn't work out. Seems your friend and I have things in common lol. Ty so much. That helps a ton!!
  14. I am very new to keeping fish. I was originally lead astray by some bad advice and have been working to solve the problems that arose because of it. For the past 3 weeks I have been doing a fish-in cycle with a 10-gallon tank and a fishless with a 5-gallon. I just today obtained a 29-gallon tank. The plan was to fishless cycle the 29 while continuing to fish-in cycle the 10. Once the 29 was finished cycling I was going to put the fish currently occupying the 10 into the 29 and add to it. The problem comes in that I recently discovered that although I was originally told the fish I currently have are compatible, I am not finding conflicting info as to if this is true or not. I currently have 3 glo tetras (black skirt tetras) and 1 male guppy. The original plan was to increase those numbers to 6 tetras and 4-5 male guppies. I am now reading that the tetras can nip at the male guppies and possibly kill them making them incompatible. However, I have also read that if you keep the tetras in a large enough school (6+) that this will not happen. I'm so confused as to if I should continue with my plan or scrap it and find a different solution. It's especially frustrating considering I already have some of the fish. It is interesting to note I have not seen ANY fin nipping from the tetras. I dont wanna fool myself to think that that could be because they are young and small though. If I had to decide between the 2 species I would probably pick guppies, however that runs the added issue that I have more of the tetras currently. Questions then are: 1. Are these fish compatible? 2. If not, how would you suggest going from here? Current tanks available are 29, 10, and 5.
