@Guppysnailcongrats on the new fish. I absolutely love them. For such a tiny fish they are super personable! I got these in February and I am going to get a floating basket with little holes in it to protect them. I will keep you posted on how that goes. Right now they are breeding in floating water sprite in a planted 40 breeder. Their tank mates are Panda Cory’s, some Bamboo Shrimp, and a mystery snail. Pandas breeding on the bottom and Luminatus breeding on top. They make great tank mates. I am keeping them at 76-77 degrees. So far they eat everything I put in for their small mouths. Crushed Xtreme Krill Flake, Easy Fry, Rapashy, & Frozen Daphina. Good luck and keep me updated. I know your going to love them!

Seachem Potassium melting floating plants?
Kurt Brutting replied to CanadaAmanda's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
Maybe try dosing half of the recommended amount for your aquarium and see if your Frog bit bounces back. One time I stopped dosing Seachems Potassium and my Java Ferns starting to struggle. So I started back up again, but I don’t do the full recommended dosage. I probably dose 80% of what I should for my size aquariums. Even with that amount my Frog bit never really looks 100%, maybe it’s the potassium maybe it’s my super hard water. They grow but they don’t thrive. -
Dwarf Aquarium Lily
Kurt Brutting replied to Nana Finopolis's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
I love this plant! I want to do a scape using just this plant! Red leaves and Lilly pads everywhere. -
Your eco-system is still very young. Time will help and a good maintenance schedule. I like to do 20% water changes every week with new aquariums. Also reducing your light intensity or duration will help. What is your light and light schedule? Having your light on a timer is also super beneficial. If you can add more plants to help suck up all the excess nutrients will also help. Floating plants especially help like water sprite, Amazon Frog-bit, or salvinia.

It’s hard to tell from the pictures but it looks savable. Maybe do some maintenance, manually remove the algae, and, get some floating plants. I swear by floating plants they just don’t like to much flow.

How old is the tank? Is it new? Your water is perfect for Neo’s. Maybe he or she was just old?- 21 replies

Help with suggestions for plants for a newbie
Kurt Brutting replied to Lilred's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
I 2nd @Sleepy Dwarf Sag is great for shorter tanks. I also like floating Water Sprite the roots will drape down and secure into the substrate giving it a nice jungle look. -
Nerite Snails do a good job eating Staghorn algae. Snails and floating plants and my favorite for fighting algae.

Black Spots on Plant Leaves
Kurt Brutting replied to Karen Galley's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
Welcome aboard! I agree with PlaneFishGuy my Java Fern loves extra potassium. The more potassium the happier. I dose Seachem Potassium twice a week and my Easy Green schedule is a little bit each day. So when I do my water change every week my nitrates are up to 25-40 ppm or a little higher. If you start getting algae I would dial back your light schedule. I have mine on for 7 hours a day on Kasa Wi-Fi timers. Good luck! -
Well done, especially after the advice of your LFS. I’ve learned so many lessons the hard way in this hobby from impulsive buying. You did the right thing for you and the fish. Wait for the Bolivian Ram it will be worth it. It’s a way easier fish.

Blue light will help with plant color and photosynthesis, but having it on at night as a night light will definitely grow algae.

I just ordered fish online for the time ever. I purchased 12 Red Neon Blue Eye Rainbows from Dansfish. I am super excited, but nervous. I never received anything alive in the mail before besides snails. @knee let me know how your Pandas arrive from Aqua Huna I might get some.- 281 replies
