This is my view from my favorite chair.
Angels to the left of me, nanos to the right, here I am, stuck in the middle with you. [Nod to the Beatles for the catchy hook.]
My sort of Yin and Yang style 100 G tanks with black stand, trim, darker wood, and light sand vs. brown stand, trim, light wood and black sand. They’re not as opposite as ideal for a Yin Yang, but they didn’t start out planned that way so it’s as close as I can get with them.
The only art I made is the watercolor swallowtail butterfly. To the left of the butterfly is all from friends or family, to the right side is all professional photos I won at silent auction at vet conferences where the proceeds from the auction go toward exotic animal medicine research groups that improve our knowledge about how to care for and treat exotic pets or zoo animals. Properly conducted research on animals isn’t always bad. Oops, when did I climb on that soapbox? Stepping down, now.
Is this inspirational or aspirational? Either way, so jealous

Do you think you’ll need the coral for Discus? How low does your PH get without any additives?
My ph runs very low. I was adding to mostly to build some stability in that department. But I’m not fully committed yet.

75 g are a great size. Happy you were patient and got what you wanted. Cannot wait to follow this build journey!!
Don’t really have a solid discus in mind. I know I want all the same color, pigeon blood or turquoise Likely. The plan is to get the tank running, then after it’s good and broke-in get the discus.

Gratz. Def a exciting time when new tanks are in the house.
U ain’t kidding. Trying to enjoy the ride, and savor the time. Gonna be a very long time b4 I can get another tank.

That’s why I skipped the 55 in favor of the 75. I could have settled so many times, but I’m sure glad I’m I waited.

Hank and Lucy with a small spawn
LUCY with some wigglers
I have two males that fire up red over the gold at spawning. Which I had the skilz to get them past the wiggling stage….

@PineSong 3/4 of the reason he’s still in the box. Growing fast.

I can get spawns fairly regular, but can’t get past the wiggler stage. I’ve pulled the eggs, left them alone, nuttin’. They spawned again today, so maybe this time.

nice. it going to need bigger wood!
I’ve got 3 more pieces to stick in it. 4 if you count my mossy log.
I think I’ve under estimated my substrate needs though. I have about 1/3 bag of eco complete that I was planning on capping with 5 or 6 lbs of crushed coral and the gravel from the old tank. Collecting thoughts:
should I get another bag of eco-complete or gravel?
my water has high gh, but little to no kh. Since I’m working into discus, is this too much coral?

After two years of plotting, planning, saving my pennys, and fast talking my wife, I have my 75G tank! Over the next week I’ll paint the back, and get ready to retire my 20g long. I also need to rearrange the “fish room” so I can move it in.
One step closer to getting my discus!

Wow, @Ken Burke, I can't believe your gladiolus are already blooming. Mine are just about 7" tall right now.
Yup, and we’ve been swimming for a month or so. Summer comes early in Louisiana.

Just added maracyn and paracleanse, but the salt is already making a difference

my wife’s betta is about 4 years old, so older than the “internet’s” opinion regarding lifespan.
his chest and belly are swollen, with a reddish tint, and he is not eating.
The other fish are acting fine, but include most of my red sailfin corys.best pictures available, sorry

Out of everything there, the only concern I'd have for you is substrate. I've had Discus spawn in the past in tanks with black painted glass backs and bottoms without too much of an issue with them feeding from the parents slime coat. Bare bottom would be the best recommendation I have for you, or a pseudo bare bottom.
Per talking with a few breeders over the years, knew a German Diplomat who was big into Discus, and his success stemmed from a simple tank with a dusting of sand at the bottom. He claimed the key food for him to get good spawns was a constant fresh supply of blackworms. The purpose of the dusting of sand was because of a presentation he sat in done by Hans (from Discus Hans) who mentioned that he had noticed during some collecting trips and documented footage of wild Discus that they blew water towards sandy substrates to find small inverts for food. According to this guy, when he went with a sand dusting and started feeding blackworms, he would see his Discus blowing on the substrate to blow the sand away from the blackworms before eating them. Per taking the recommendation of blackworms from him, I actually went from having a healthy Discus tank to having pairs setup shop in the tank and start to spawn. This was also in a display, so like your current setup I was breaking the 'rules' of having substrate.
YMMV when it comes to substrate vs. bare bottom vs. the pseudo bare bottom, so be sure to take notes on what you see so you know what works best for you, your Discus and your workflow of maintaining their tank. I will always advocate keeping breeding tanks simple, so bare bottom or pseudo bare bottom would be my recommendation. That said, you might have success with your setup. Just because one method works for most, doesn't mean it works for all. It's about finding what works for you 🙂
Good luck with the pair! I'll be keeping an eye on this thread for sure! Plus, I call dibs on some local Discus 😁
Get in line buddy. 😋

Failures are just figuring out how not to do it. Therefore failure = success. (If squint and the light hits it just right).
man, I know a lot of ways not to do things

I don’t use bag, so my mind just didn’t go dat way.
I use a reusable storage Twist n lock container by Ziplock. no rubber bands, easy to fill, and reusable.

🤣 Bagging as in taking them to the store in bags. I remove all plants and hardscape so they were all visible at once. This is half the tank the other side has just as many 😲
What a difference one letter makes🥺

@Tihshho excellent analysis! Much appreciated. I have credit from a wholesaler to get the Saffrons, so I am not worried about getting them. My thing with the Discus is . . . the pair currently breeding are so small, yet they're going to town. The others I have are absolutely gigantic in comparison. I just have to believe there is a pair in there.
My actual fear is that the silicone to the 29 gal is black, and would distract baby discus from eating slime coat off parents 🤣
Still on the fence here. I'd like to succeed with discus just once, and then cross that of my bucket list. But if it's a huge bother, and will take forever for a pair to really settle in, I'm probably too impatient.
The Saffrons are so special . . . I've been utterly obsessed with them for over a year now. But I know that If I go down that rabbit hole, I'll be dedicated to them with no plans to get out. Kind of a one-way.
U always need an exit strategy. I think u should breed the discus and send a few my way……

i myself wouldnt bother in a single species tank. even in my community tank, if i let them have a place to breed, i get over run with baby pleco's in a hurry.
You ain’t kidding! I had 3 or 4, maybe more, spawns b4 I figured out that I needed to shut down the cycle. Took 6 months to sell ‘‘em all.
It was fun, so many water changes🙃

Depending on available tank space, separating the boys might be in order. They can breed prolifically.

@Guppysnail would luv to try the super reds. No room just now.

Nice. Be aware, water sprite grows fast, so a little goes a long way. Hardest part about it imo is learning that it’s ok to toss it into the compost bin.
