    Thank you again for your advice. I won't take up this man on his filter offer. I am hoping the two cultures of bacteria help take off. A different stranger in the neighborhood offered to give me a couple of cories (in a post asking if anyone wanted to share some substrate with me to jump start my cycle), is it too soon for me to accept?

    I have it on an 9 hour schedule, is that too little? I posted on a community forum and someone is now offering to give me a filter cartridge to squeeze into my tank. Would that jump start my cycle even MORE or is that just a waste of time? I appreciate you answering all of my questions haha

    Really?! I tested my water yesterday (5 days after adding the Fritzyme and after having "fed" the bacteria with fish food twice and then the test detected no ammonia, nitrites, or nitrates. I *just* added this used gravel, will testing tomorrow be too soon?

    I have already added Fritzyme 7 to my tank a couple of days ago and also added a little fish food a couple of times. I thought the used substrate with the beneficial bacteria would help jump start my cycle though.

    A stranger was kind enough to give me some used gravel from two of his tanks to jump start the cycle in my tank. Some commenters on another one of my posts said to use substrate from a trusted tank, but since I didn't have animals in the tank anyway, I figure I don't have anything to lose but time if this doesn't work out for some reason. Another commenter on another post of mine was surprised I did not get any snails from the plants I already had. Well, surprise! There probably are live hitchhikers in this gravel. What kind of snails are these? And now that I have this used substrate, what's next for me?

    Listen shrimp are ugly bugs and axolotls are beautiful elegant critically endangered creatures that are able to regenerate limbs and are salamanders that never leave the larval stage. I love them. I even got to visit the one of like two places they are endemic to in mexico (lake xochimilco) and it was very cool/sad to be among a remnant of a precolonial time that is the home of these incredible creatures. Sorry to ramble haha

    Yes I read that about puffers. Of course if you Google "tank mates" and any fish, you will find a blog from someone who claims to know who makes a good tank mates for anything, including pea puffers. I REALLY wanted to get some but upon further reading about them and the whole wanting to kill anyone else with them (and the possibility of their beaks overgrowing and eventually keeping them from being able to eat if they don't have enough hard stuff to chew on), I decided it wasn't for me. A mere beginner.

    What about assassin snails? There's something about a murderous snail that screams "buy me"

    I suppose that's where snail eating fish come into play, right? Obviously my tank is not stocked so if you have any suggestions on who I should be getting to keep my future snail problem in check, I am open to it. I have a 29 gallon tank

    I dont think I have ever even seen a snail in person more than twice in my life. But they don't freak me out like those tiny little shrimp do

    I just have two lil plants that came from petco that sat around for a couple of days before they got planted......so if there were snails perhaps they died. I didn't know I should have expected that kind of hitchhiker. Woops

    Well I will be getting some gravel from an established tank today and I guess I will need to go out and buy myself some snails!

    Thank you. I think a trip to my LFS is in order for some plants. I recently ordered some from Wetplants but they delayed shipment because of fedex delays and I am so anxious to get them. My first two plants were from a chain pet store so they probably had nothing to offer.

    Thank you. It seems like the general consensus is getting ammonium chloride is the way to go. I bought that Fritzyme 7 stuff to add to the tank and their website even says "you don't need to add ammonia, the fish will do that for you!" And it's sometimes hard to disagree with a manufacturer when they are telling you what you want to hear, even if it not best practice. I am glad I came to this forum for help.
