  1. Thanks Dawn! I can’t move the filter over, but I can use the media- good plan!
  2. Good to know. I have a canister filter now and my new tank has the filter built in. I could move the ceramic pieces and bio balls over to start it off. You’ve given me some good ideas- thanks!
  3. I’ve had the barbs for about 6 months. After watching more of Cory’s videos I learned a very valuable piece of information. I have never quarantined new fish and treated them before adding them to my tank. I believe I will treat my whole tank. I have her separated and have been treating her but I don’t think it’s dropsy. It appears that her gill plate may be gone or that her gill is so inflamed, that it just looks like it’s gone.
  4. I got my new acrylic tank!! I have my driftwood and plants in my current tank to hopefully move some bacteria over. I was wondering if I should soak some of my substrate in the tank (in a mesh bag) too? How about the rocks I plan to add?
  5. I love this! I got tired of breaking tubes too. Here is my quick fix, but the wood is so much nicer. I hate styrofoam, until I find a use for it🙂
  6. He doesn't bother my other fish at all, doesn't even eat the same food. He just hangs out in his jacuzzi (bubbles), munches his algae wafers and occasionally dislodges a plant. "Coil of rope from the aft side...LOL!!!" unfortunately that's the problem.
  7. I checked with one who couldn't take him. I have one other place I could check with
  8. I hope this is an ok post, I'm not trying to sell or give away, I just need advice on how to go about re-homing one of my pets.😥 7 years ago, I decided to get an aquarium. I had grown up with 10 gallon tanks with guppies and swordtails. I researched tanks and water parameters, but stupidly, NOT the fish. On advice of the store, I got a pleco that would "only grow to 4-5 inches". So now at 9 inches long in a 45 gallon tank, I think he's killing my other fish. He's not eating them, but by the amount of waste he produces. Is there a large fish rescue that anyone is aware of that can help?
  9. Should I treat the whole tank? If so, will 1-2 tbsp be enough for a 45 gallon tank?
  10. I noticed about a few weeks ago that one of Barbs gills looked red. My pH was at 6.3, so I did a 50% water change. My filter was also due to be cleaned so I did that too. She didn’t seem to be improving and now it looks like the redness is on her pectoral fin. She is also pretty bloated looking. I also noticed tonight a bluish spot on top of her back, which I haven’t seen before. I checked the water again tonight, pH is 6.8, nitrates and ammonia are 0. KH 0, GH 180 ( it’s always this high). My pictures keep attaching upside down, and I am trying to attach a video. One of my other barbs looks red gilled too now, but not as bad. Please help!
  11. I do plan to build up toward the back to give the illusion of depth and use driftwood too. But the lower area toward the front will be shorter plants. I don’t have a PAR meter either and don’t plan to buy one any time soon. Thanks for the input, I know fluval is known to have good products.
  12. I am so glad I found this post! This is so helpful seeing how everyone is using the Fluval 3.0 and the app. I am debating on purchasing this light for my new tank.
  13. Does this light (Current Serene)seem sturdy being so high above the tank? It seems like it is reasonably priced for all that it does.
  14. The light I have now sits very close to the glass canopy and algae builds up heavily on the underside of the canopy (inside the tank above the water). I am not sure if it is because it is so close to the tank, but I don't get algae on any other part of the canopy. The Fluval and the Nicrew seem to be ones that sit very close. The Current Serene light looks like it sits higher off the tank but wow, it looks very complex! So does the wattage, NM, K really make much difference? I guess I'm more concerned about putting a lot of money into plants for them to all die because of poor lighting. I would rather invest in a decent light up front. Thanks for everyone's suggestions!
  15. I have a new tank on it's way (55 gallon Acrylic) and I am pretty sure I need new lighting. My current light in my 45 gallon tank is 24W, but I don't have live plants. In my new tank, I am planning on a fully planted aquascape. I am new to plant care so am choosing very easy plant options to start with. I am not sure how much difference the wattage makes - I have read in multiple places and get differing information: 110W, 1W per gal, and 3W per gal. The tank is 36"L X 24" H, it seems that would make a difference as well. I'm also thinking I need one I can put on a timer. Do I need one that slowly increases in brightness and then decreases? There are too many options and I don't know what I "need" vs. "nice to have" for a healthy tank. The more I research, the more "information" there is to sort through! Thanks for any advice!
  16. Hi! I am so glad I found this store and this site! I grew up with aquariums but hadn't had one for many years until I talked my husband into getting one. I have a 45 gallon basic tank with a canister filter and decided to upgrade. I ordered a 55 Gallon all in one acrylic tank that will be here next week ( it took 4 months) I really hope it's worth it. 😬 So, I have lots of questions for all of you super experienced aquarists!
