  1. That's interesting. Fish do have characters. Maybe yours were on the peaceful side, or others' were on the agressive side? I'm totally down to keep them in different tanks, but cichlid behavior worrys me with shrimp and maybe snails. So that might be a pass too Lucky! None of my friends are into fishkeeping. Sounds very nice
  2. Mine can be black/blues too. I don't know really. Idk if they are pure black as juveniles, but mine currently look like the juviniles of black and blues. If both have similar juvenile phase, then I don't know. they currently look like these:
  3. Would they make an okay tank mate in this tank, or would they potentially be bullies with this stocking? Have you ever kept them with shrimp and snails? Amazing looking fish 🙂 Mine are very small yet, like a half size of a honey gourami. I assume around 1 month old or so? All I see, for now, is they sometimes turn around each other in a circle trying to be bossy, and rarely shoo each other away by pecking and following for a short distance.
  4. Yeah, most of the topic is evolving around community tanks. I remember seeing your apistos, and wanted to learn if you have any experiences! Thanks
  5. Do you have any online source that would give in depth detail about spefic apistos? Everything seems to be super generalised. I would love to nerd some and learn more about the ones I like
  6. They are both really beautiful fish! I feel you. I would love to see it working just as it does with bigger cichlids 😞 What apisto was on your mind? Anything you like in particular? They all look amazing 🙂 Also @tolstoy21. Maybe you'd like to share your opinion/experience as well!
  7. Cool! yea I keep my tank around 80-82F. I actually have a 50x50 cube that is quite planted as well. That one has a stocking of red lizard whiptails, otos, pygmy cories, neocaridinas and mystery snails. It is a super chill tank without any centerpiece fish really. Isk to what extend apistos would fit in that peaceful environment, and if they would bother anything there? Also, apistos are never being sold alone here. So always either a 1m:1f, and sometimes 1m:2f. so for 50cube and considering stockings, would apistos be a fit there as a 1m:1f? Or 1m:2f? Especially borelliis or fire reds? Or any other recommendations if these are too agressive? more importantly do they go after shrimp and snails? This is the 50cube tank. I keep this one 25C:
  8. What an experience! Many thanks for sharing it with me. I already have 3 rams in my tank as it is, and I love them. I guess it is the nature of being cichlid in similar sizes? Cause mine don’t care about gourami at all, even when it invades their space, they just let him be, even let him eat their food. I’ve also seen people keeping rams with discus and angels, thought maybe apistos could work too as they are also cichlids. thanks again!
  9. Hey guys, Coming from cichlids are cichlids perspective: Has anyone tried keeping apistos and rams together? In what gallon/liters of a tank with what kind of a setup worked the best for you, if you ever did? My black rams don’t seem to care anyone in the tank, but they barely sometimes show dominance towards each other for a couple minutes and then let it go. I am really enjoying the cichlids lately as I haven’t been keeping them for ages. Would it be okay to keep 3 black rams with 2 apistos 1m:1f) for example? Would they bully each other or just their own species mainly? I really like some apistos, mainly agassizi fire reds and borellii opals specifically. Just in case the species matters. the other tank mates are honey gourami, sterbai corys, rummy noses and one L199 pleco. the tank is 100x40x40cm (160liters/42g) @anewbie maybe you’d like to share your opinion/experience
  10. I’m from Turkey Yeah. Definitely sounds like the best option. I do not worry about it getting cold in dangerous levels as the room temp is minimum 22C at home, but the other way around, it potentially breaking and starting to overheat sounds scary. Another 100W seems to be the way. Thanks for the help.
  11. I like it on tall tanks and when limited as a background plant. Like this scape:
  12. You are lucky! The general problem with this fish is, to my knowledge, they have a gut bacteria that stays alive with their eating. However, as most of them are wildcaught, during the transportation procedures and stuff, they are generally starved, and they don't eat anything for a quite long time, and once they have a chance to eat at the store, they are mostly kept in wayy to many numbers in small tanks so they barely can graze on anything, if the bacteria has already made it to that point. So with the days passing without any feeding, their gut bacteria ends up dying. At that moment, it becomes a ticking bomb. No matter how much it eats from that point, it does not matter. They die. This is what I've read before, but cannot tell how true that is. That's why it is generally recommended to get full belly ones and as fast as they make it into a store, because mostly their starvation keeps continuing and this guarantees that "ticking bomb" situation, sadly. As nature does not offer algae wafers and their natural behavior is based on grazing nonstop, they sometimes hardly even accept any commercial foods or veggies. It is great that yours are accepting the algae wafers. That is a huge surplus in the long term. I am lucky that mine are accepting those too. But In my case, corycats taught them to eat.
  13. That sounds like a Val tank! 🤣
  14. Update: Decided to go with another 100w heather for now. Potentially 200w cooking fish sounds like a horror movie. If I see this 100w not being enough, I may add the current 100w I have and set it on low to asist it reaching okay numbers faster, I thought.
  15. Thank you very much everyone for your help and responses. I will try my best to respond y'all below: Sounds like a plan! If I need to, I will sneak in the 100w I have in the tank. I think this is one of the differences in the hobby we have between countries! I have been fishkeeping for a good 15 years, and even back then I can't recall coming across anyone using undergravels here. I feel like it has never gained reputation here, even during old school times. So It is sort of impossible to find. We literally have any type of filters but this one. I have a USB air pump for my sponge filter. As much as it sounds like achore, When we have electricity cut, I usually bag the HOB media and keep it in the tank while running sponge filter on USB air pump. We keep the home at 22C all the time at lowest, so it does not change in winter. Our winters are not really tough here 200 Seems like a better bet then considering they are both the same price and I already have a 100w on hand if needed. Masterpiece 🤣 Hydrocotyle tripartite ‘Japan’ is one of the few plants that didn't survive in my water. I've found a really beautiful scape with jungle val but it shooting roots constantly seems like something that would annoy me in the future as it will pop up everywhere. So not sure If I want jungle val as much as it looks good. Also my height is only 40cms, so I think it will start outgrowing that height pretty fast and will block lots of light suddenly
  16. Ouch! Good thing you have seperated them then. those long antennas can be really tempting for fish. If their antennas get injured, they can get depressed and die, as their vision is pretty bad in general and their whole action is mostly based on their antennas! Def good thing you have seperated them. I would be suspicious about bettas too. I would suggest to at least observe very closely, bettas have a reputation to show interest in snail antennas or shrimp in general. Just to be cautious! hope your fish friends can make it through the disease asap :(
  17. 🤣 we really should unite the measurements all around the world, it’s 2023! 😄 Yea, def agreed. It is just I am short on money but I can’t risk keeping them as it is, and thought maybe 200w could do the job, and I will have this 100w as a backup on hand in case of emergencies. I constantly keep checking the temp in the tank to make sure nothing is too off until I buy a new one. I always use tetra’s heaters and personally have been very happy with their performance, but I feel like too much turning on and off all the time kinda wore them out, as I keep my tanks without lid and next to an open window all the time. This one is only around a 1 yo and is already off by 1 C (in weird scale: ~2F) 😛 I am very excited as well! Hoping for the best for the fishies. I am sure they will love their bigger home. Especially rams. No matter how small they are, they are having small funny fights😄 maybe to establish dominance? Turnins around each other and stuff. has been ages since I kept cichlids. Missed these type of behavior on fish 😄
  18. Hey guys, hope you are all doing well. As my 29g tank is pretty old, and it's stand is giving me constant anxiety, I've decided to upgrade my tank to a new bigger one. As I already had a stand sitting in basement, I've decided to go with it. The tank will be 100x40x40cm. (39.4x15.7x15.7 inch approximately). 160 Liters (42.2g, you guys have weird measurements. help.) I will try to keep it low budget as much as I can, as I cannot afford too much currently. I just want a better environment for the fish. The stocking is: 9 rummynoses, 5 sterbais, 3 rams, 1 honey gourami, 1 L199, nerites, rabbit snails and a borneo sucker. Planning to add one SAE in the future. This is the stand: I am currently running my 29g with One sponge filter and one HOB with a performance of 550lt/h. I have a 100w heater, we keep our home at 22C all year long, so 100w has been enough in my 125Liters (33g) tank too. However, lately my heater starting being off up to 1 C, so I am planning to get a new one. I keep my tank around 27-28C (80-82F) currently as rams like it hot, and other fish and rabbit snails I keep can go up to these temps with no problem. (Tried catchin borneo sucker 4 times to move it to a cooler tank, Big mission fail, may move him when I take the tank down) Questions: 100w and 200w heaters are the same price. Should I get a 200w one instead for this new tank? Should I put anything below the tank? I use straphor on my others but on this one it would look very ugly I feel. Should I increase my HOB size to something maybe AC50 or AC70? AC70 is 0.5x more expensive as I have to order it from Amazon Germany, so I need to pay stuff for transportation and customs. Would buying a new AC50 would be a worthy upgrade or kinda a waste of money? Is one sponge and current HOB I have would be enough? We as a family had bigger tanks in the past, but they were not in my responsibility, my all tanks were 125 Liters or smaller. So this is the biggest one I will have that belongs to me only. So I am not really experienced with this size, even it is considerably a medium one. thanks for your help in advance. Also in case you'd like to share any scape that you like, it is very much appreciated! I'm looking for some ideas 🙂 @mynameisnobody as I know you like bigger tanks, wanted to tag you 🙂
  19. We indeed have many vegan-friendly "leather" options! 😄 Like apple leather!
  20. I would personally not keep pymgy cories with tiger barbs. Their activity level is nothing to them, I think they may feel insecure between tiger barbs. They are super tiny and sensitive. And in many peoples experience, they are shy, which mine are not really. I have also kept them in a group of 6, and then 16. The increased group size has a huge affect on their behavior. From bigger cories, I currently have sterbais, but I kinda even regret keeping them in my 29g. Taking that tank down soon, ordered a new 160 Liters 100x40x40 tank today. I think they will fit there much better. 29g feels so small for sterbais. At least in my opinion. And they grew up pretty fast, but reached sexual maturity pretty late, took longer than a year, almost 1.5 years. That's the all my experience I can share regarding corys if it is any help Also why you don't wanna keep your new tigers with other ones in a bigger tank? You no longer have the other ones?
  21. I'm down to be wrong and to have everything said to be an assumption. I just hope they can make it into one of those many tanks bigger than 10g before it is almost a year since last august. Took some time to be a grow out tank for 11 barbs, I "assume". Good luck man. Cheers, I tagged you an only ex tiger barb keeper I know of. Too bad I couldn't hide my shocking reaction at that point. ;D You are welcome
