Story behind your pfp

The endler guy

Mine is a culvert, with a tree growing around it, in a creek on our property where our home's water source comes from. The reservoir is right above this culvert. It's just a neat feature on the property. It's probably been supplying the home with water since the 1940's. Currently, the cold water into the kitchen comes straight from here, no filtration. There's sediment in that water 😅 Probably other stuff too. I fill my tanks with that water. I figure it's "alive".

Really nice ship! Nice picture too….I have a cousin in the English counterpart.

My profile pic is the best pic I could get of one of my first guppies (took forever to get them still!). One day I’ll change it to something a bit more advanced, but for now it’s guppies all the way.

Probably the only clear photos of guppies are anything like endlers (but endlers are FAR superior!)

My pfp (avatar?) is an image taken of Earth in 2006 from the Cassini space probe as it orbited Saturn.  It was means to emulate the original image of Earth taken from Voyager in 1990 termed "Pale Blue Dot".  The image is evocative for me of the immense isolation in which we find ourselves as a a species.  It also serves as a reminder that all of our squabbles, our infighting, the lines we draw between each other, mean nothing to the universe.  They are the minuscule concerns of the inhabitants of a fleck of rock rotating through a vast space.  The original image inspired these words from the late, great Carl Sagan:

"From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it's different. Consider again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

"The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

"Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

"The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

"It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."

My banner is less grandiose.  It is a kangaroo lounging on a beach outside of Esperance, Western Australia.  Just a funny picture of a part of the world I loved when I visited.

Great justification. My kid sister who read this over my shoulder (passionate about space) had an interesting reaction: “What does delusion mean?”.

Thank you very much @OnlyGenusCaps…you’ve got me thinking.

My PFP is of a viperfish on a trash can. Dried in the sun perfectly, but the eye stayed intact. I took this picture in an undisclosed location and for the sake of privacy, during my free time.

I have always had a [deep :)] appreciation for the deep sea and so when I finally got to experience it, I made sure to at least capture some memories.

My banner is of mushrooms growing through trichoderma(?) mold amongst a bed of moss. Something beautiful I saw just off trail that likely could only form with intense humidity of a waterfall spray. Reminds me if you take time to stop and look around you, it's often the small things that are the most beautiful.

I’m not sure if acquire is the right term, but for the sake of secrecy, let’s say I stumbled upon said trash can which just so happened to have a viperfish on it 😋

I really don’t enjoy being cryptic but some things I signed demand it…. Oh who am I kidding, I kind of enjoy being cryptic.
