Fish Folk
My favorite cold water fish. Easy to feed. Easy to breed. As beautiful as they come. Here’s 60 seconds looking at my Notropis Chrosomus (rainbow shiners). Set up a well-planted cold water (room temp) tank ya NERMs! You’ll love these… 6

The only fish I like as much are my German Blue Rams…. And yes, my Discus… But it’s a close beauty-stand-off with these U.S. Native Shiners! When the Rainbows spawn, they go insane with colors. Males turn hot pink+their sky blue…

Isaac M
Beautiful @Fish Folk, I have a school in my 55 gallon but they have yet to color up, they have grown a lot bigger though than when I got them a few months ago. How long does it take for them to show their color?

Isaac M
@Fish Folk I see, mine I would guess are less than a year old still, I got them in August and they were small as shown in this picture: I guess I will just wait and see haha
Fish Folk
@Isaac M I think they just need some time. I’m seeing hints… My young are still colorless…
Isaac M
I apologize, that was a picture from back when I bought them. It is tough for me to get a picture due to all the shade but here is a small video, there are some in there that I did not record that definitely have a lot of gold or jewels as you called it on top. Thank you for taking the time though to show me what to look for in terms of their coloration! 1
Beardedbillygoat1975
ORD they are lovely and every time you post them @Fish Folki end up going down a rabbit hole seeing which native I should consider! I’ve been considering them for my 50 g trough pond for summer but I think their high temp may just not be high enough. The hottest day here last summer in a pond was 85-87. I was looking at the red belly dace since they are from the south and quite hot conditions. Any suggestions?

He breeds them outside in N.C. I’d like to hear how warm vs. cool his water gets.
WhitecloudDynasty
Mine will spawn from 50-85 degrees base on the condition of the females. Males are always ready to go. Any suggestions? Even if it gets to the high 80s, run air, not a sponge filter but an air stone. The higher temperature don't normally kill the fish, it's the lack of DO.

With that size they should show some blue flaking by now unless they are all female or the red line On 1/11/2022 at 2:11 PM, Fish Folk said: My favorite cold water fish. Easy to feed. Easy to breed. Isaac M
@WhitecloudDynasty what do you mean the red line? And yeah I would have thought that they should be showing some color, its a school of 15+ so I hope there would be at least one male in there haha I got mine from dansfish

This is what I used to think _all fired up ones_ were -- a separate subspecies / color morph. So I see there is a definitely unique color group. Are these in the photos males that are in spawning dress?
