yannachka
last saturday i redid a tank that had leaches that came in on some plants. ive had 2 of them sitting in a tub of water straight from the tap (no dechlorinator). our water is very hard and mineral rich here so i wanted to see what effects this would have on the leaches. its now thursday and they are still going strong. not sure what this proves besides them being unnecessarily hardy but i’ll see how long it takes for them to finally kick the dust. there are some pond snails in the tub that are still going strong too which is interesting.
Daniel
I get leeches in with my blackworms and seemingly tap water just seem to make leeches even stronger!
yannachka
i clearly don’t know how to spell leeches... but yes, they aren’t really slowing down, i’ll see how long they last in here.
KBOzzie59
Leeches... The cockroach of aquatics!
yannachka
it’s still going strong. put it in a smaller container with a 100% fresh water change of straight tap water a couple days ago and that wasn’t enough to even phase it. Streetwise
I think watching Stand By Me left me creeped out by leeches. I remember catching some turtles as a kid and picking off leeches around their necks and legs. This made me think of other kid worries, and I had to go find this John Mulaney quote: "I was a very nervous kid, I was anxious all the time when I was younger, but what's nice is that some of the things I was anxious about don't bother me at all anymore. Like, uh, I always thought that quicksand was going to be a much bigger problem than it turned out to be. Because if you watch cartoons, quicksand is like the third biggest thing you have to worry about in adult life behind real sticks of dynamite and giant anvils falling on you from the sky. I used to sit around and think about what to do about quicksand." Edited September 29, 2020 by Streetwise
Ben Ellison
You could do a experiment and see if any of normal meds seem or what salt levels kill them.
yannachka
@Ben Ellison that’s a good idea. im going to see if any others are in the substrate and may experiment on them.

Daniel
That's got to be it. I know the blackworms are grown in outdoor ponds.
Struggle
We’ve had them come in on plants as well and my wife severely dislikes them. Fortunately for me I don’t mind them too much and take great pleasure in watching my wife get all worked up and hunt them down when she sees one! Ben Ellison
I have never disinfected plants but this making me feel thats a bad idea. However, I can't buy direct from a farm so it might be much risk at all.
