Fish Folk
Sold a bunch of fish to LFS recently, and got a small handful of Red Dwarf Aquarium Lily bulbs to try out. Never worked with these before, but thought they’d be fun to try. Starting out Ok. Some had broken off the bulbs, others are bulbs just starting to sprout. Looking forward to how this develops. Any tips? Do share!
H.K.Luterman
I ordered a bulb from the Co-Op and it should be arriving today. I've never had one before so I'd love to hear some tips too!
FrozenFins
Awesome @Fish Folk!!! Don't be surprised if those leaves fall off, mine did. It was a solid 2-3 weeks before it started sprouting more leafs. Just be patient with these plants.

Patrick_G
I have Tiger Lotus. It grows like crazy. I’m constantly trimming so it doesn’t shade itself but I love it.

I love it!
ARMYVET
Im not sure if your supposed to bury the whole bulb on those. I think it causes them to rot. I may be wrong but double check!

I may be wrong but double check! Yeah, I was told to put them in 1/2 way -- roots will send down, leaves up, and eventually runner-pads to surface. The ones planted in photos above are actually _not_ bulbs, but entire pad-groups broken off. If they root in the substrate without the bulb, great . . . but maybe they won't, and will just die off. Who knows! There's one bulb with a root sticking up (near the bottom of the photo group). I've decided to just let it go and see whether it figures out which way is up and which is down 😅

I had one do that to me but I just laid in on top of the substrate and so far its doing great. I have an entire tank planted but that bulb is the only one I go looking at on purpose. I named it Fred. ....How ya doing Fred? Nothing today? 🤣

Pizzafan
I’m also really curious how these continue to develop after sprouting - planted this one from petco about a month ago and it grew insanely fast. Planted 2 - one was a dud that didn’t do anything. This pic is from a week ago, it’s already quite a bit bigger does the bulb eventually shrink or does it stay there?

This is a bulb I planted in April. Bulb is still there but the plant is enormous 2
Just Renee
I have noticed that my lily bulb is now attracting a lot of snails and I had some issues at the beginning that led me to believe it's basically half rotten but it did end up growing a plant. The plant now has roots in the substrate but it's still connected to the bulb by like a single strand. Can I safely cut that strand and remove the bulb, because I think it's probably all gross and funky inside?

FrozenFins
@Just Renee I would just leave it and monitor it. In a week you may see some leafs! Or you may be right and it is rotten, time will tell though. Edited June 21, 2021 by James Black
ARMYVET
Eventually the plant will melt back like all bulb plants and go into a dormant phase.....when its dormancy is done the bulb will send out a new plant. The following was taken for a care sheet... Typically, your dwarf lily may go through dormant cycles and lose its leaves. Don’t panic! When in a good growing environment, they’ll grow back in just a few weeks.
ChefConfit
I had a dwarf Lilly that broke off the bulb this past fall. I planted the roots and it thrived until this past weekend when I broke the tank down. I replanted it in my shrimp tank because I got a tiger lotus for my new tank.
