So 1 tablespoon in a 10 gal tank? Not sure that’s enough salt to impact the plants. At least by itself. On the other hand, not sure it did all that much for the bacteria. Recommend reading blog below.

If you watch, like and comment on the videos they are sending out packages to lucky winners. But doesn’t sound like it’s that.

Didn’t @Cory talk about this in a video not too long ago. Bought 2 batches of 600 rummy nose tetras for the 800 gal. First batch did well, and lost a bunch in the next.

Did u watch the Sunday video?

@ange I live in Shreveport, so likely same weather. I closed up the tub this week because the platty fish started eating significantly less. The plants my be ok, but suspect their growth has slowed.

2 rainbow sharks and 2 angles in a 29 gal tank seams crowded, especially if the angles spawn. I would think about rehoming the sharks ab one angle, then you ha e enough room for a school of tetras. I have 3 panda Corydoras in a 10 gal. Every 2 or 3 months I need to cart 5 or 10 baby pandas to the LFS, so it’s not really the number but the aesthetics. 2 of everything might look a bit thin.

Somewhere you have some sneaky MTSes getting up to mischief while you sleep. You will never see eggs as they are live bearing (ouch).
Now that, I did not know

Trumpets? If so I really love them.

Wow. Really well put together.

I’m with @Streetwise. Low cost, easy to maintain. Only is if you want to use charcoal or other chemical media....

A couple of sponge filters, usb air pumps, easy green and root tabs, med trio and a few more things.
I hit my goal of 1 year no smoking on Sept 9th and this is my reward.
Way to go! Hardest thing I ever did was breaking that habit.

@Kelly what did you use for an ammonia source? Without fish or another source you can’t start the cycle. I’m not an expert on fishless cycling a tank, but the end result is nitrate in the water regardless.
if u just add the betta with one or two live plants and watch the water quality carefully, you should be ok. Just wait until you are seeing nitrates before, slowly, adding any more fish. The live plants will bring in a tiny amount of good bacteria, use the ammonia and nitrate for food, and bettas love hiding in them. The betta will naturally add ammonia, but should not flood the tank too quickly.
or you could add fish food and wait.

AqAdvisor for whatever reason doesn't work on certain connections. The website works on my phone but not my PC. Most people who I've talked to dislike the website overall because it makes too many assumptions about the fish and doesn't allow you to account for things like plants.
Personally when I'm researching stocking I use websites like SeriouslyFish to do research, although some people on there can be pretty insistent that commonly suggested tank sizes (ex: 20H for a single angelfish) is too small.
I think the hobby is really about getting as many opinions from as many sources as problem and then drawing your own conclusion. The best we can do as hobbyists is provide an appropriate environment and then monitor our pets to ensure that they're doing well rather than chasing numbers (be it stocking/parameters) that X website says will work for the fish that we want.
Agreed for the most part. I like the site as a starting point. And I like that looks at other things like temperature etc, and compatibility. But not a substitute for self education and good judgement.

It took me to a dead url.
Huh. I did a google search using “aquarium stocking calculator “. First entry is AqAdvisor. I’m using an iPad, so not sure if it is doing something odd.

BTW the green killing machine 3 watt is only $40 or so.

All this discussion seems very academic 😛
What are some good options for those of us running hang-on-back filters? I suppose I could get a powerhead and an inline UV unit and add it that way, but I already dislike the amount of gear hanging inside, off-of, and around my aquarium. I'd prefer to keep things more hidden and tidy if reasonably (read: affordably) possible.
I use a green killing machine rated for 20 gallons in my 38 gal. It’s hidden driftwood, so not really visible. But hiding equipment is easiest at aquarium setup. On the other hand I think a few HOB manufacturers have uv options.

Here is the stocking calculator I mentioned this morning. As near as I can tell, it is fairly comprehensive, and does not require personal info to use. I like it, but only as a tool when combined with good judgement.
so what do you think about it? If you put in the info for your tanks, what does it say? -

I’ve seen this written here several times, and this thread is the first indication I’ve ever had that the inch per gallon thing is poor advice. So now I have to ask - what’s correct? Or, what’s wrong with the inch/gallon thing that I’ve heard so much about?
Complicated answer. Start with a 10 inch Oscar in a 10 gal tank. As fish get larger, they need more room, and more water/filtration to handle the waste.
next is territory. You might be under the 1” per gal, if your angle fish stakes out territory in middle of the tank, everyone else gets stuck in the corners. This creates stress for all the Fish in the tank.
Im sure there is more on the why, so expect other will chime in.
The right answer is even more complicated. I found a “stocking calculator “ online that accounts for all the factors like size, filtration, territory temp etc. I will look for it later today.

Works for algae in the water column. Not sure about parasites, if they pass through the uv light it should help.

My pandas love tetra shrimp wafers. We feed it daily and the fish are spawning regularly.
