I’m not really enjoying the argument.
question asked: are us sterilizers worth it?
short answer: yes, kinda.UV sterilizers will clean up the water column. Quoating Green Killing Machine, “by killing or inactivating unwanted organisms.” But the Uv light degrades over time, and needs replaced periodically.
I had an issue with green water, bought an undersized sterilizer an put the UV light on a timer. Water cleared up. I recommend them if you have an issue. But if it’s not broken, ....

People do still say it today, but my point was that when people spread that misinformation way back in the early 70s, it was a little more understandable, than it is today with all the sources of information we have now. There is no excuse at all for it now.
Agreed. And the other is one inch per gallon.

Yup, that was mine too. It was the early 70s though, so while it's not an excuse, it was at least a little more understandable.
70s, 80s, again in the 90s. Heard it again not long ago🤨

Thank you
I had gotten word of some hail coming through back in July, ended up using a tent foot print as a temporary tarp to protect it, worked well.
I am not sure what is going to happen with it now that it is indoors, I expect some melt back, but I’m hoping with the light I have it won’t melt back too bad.Is that black magic taro the same as elephant ears we plant in the ground? Did you plant it in soil? How? I need to know!
my wife wants to add one to our tub next spring.

One of the many questions @Cory gets is: How many...
So, in today's inaugural episode of 'Care Forum Investigates', where average fish keepers of average intelligence attempt to solve simple problems, the question is…
How many gallons of water can I put in a 10 gallon tank?
I'm not the only one apparently. According to Google people have asked:
Not having the fancy scientific equipment to answer the question 'How many gallons does a 10 gallon tank hold per hour?', in this episode we will confine ourselves to the 'how many gallons can I put' question.
Equipment used:

Aqueon "10 gallon" aquarium:
United Scientific Large Beaker:

Medelco Small Beaker:
https://www.fishersci.com/shop/products/pyrex-griffin-beakers-15/02540M
The result after adding 37.85 liters of RO/DI tap water 25°C (but with no dechlorinator) is seen below:
The aquarium began to leak at about 9.95 gallons apparently because of the lack of an unbroken seal along the top most part of the rim.
Discussion:
While technically possible to put 10 gallons of water in a 10 gallon aquarium, you may not be able to do so without a substantial leak. It is also possible that if we were to increase the total dissolved solids (TDS) by foregoing reverse osmosis water, that all the little solids in the water would plug the leak along the rim, thus allowing for the full 10 gallons of water.
Next week on 'Care Forum Investigates': How many gallons of water can I put in a 20 gallon aquarium?
Entertaining and educational.

Way to go Cory. Two of my favorite videos.

Ummmm sounds off to me.
i guess using a Britta filter is a less efficient want to remove chlorine. But why?
I’ve use baking soda to raise the ph, but what was her ph.
i really don’t use any fertilizer in my wife’s betta tank, ther is only a handful of them. Hardly a lush jungle.
i’d think twice before trusting her advice. Would want to know a whole lot more....

I guess I’m small time 48, 15 and change, 3. Oh and a 100 gal rubber made stock tank full of platty fish, if that counts

I thought this might be fun to see what people's stats look like. Active tanks only (something, plant, animal, invert, living in it).
226 / 25.4 / 9
Enough tanks that normal people think it's crazy, but few enough that aquarium people know I'm a newbie.
A newbie w/ 9 tanks? They might be right.

I was able to get a spider plant going in my summer tub. Not really an ivy, but does put off shoots.

Thanks. I’ve netted before, but I did not know the water conditions.

This may sound drastic but I usually cut open the bag with the fish and dump fish and water directly into their new home. There is a tiny amount of stress with an abrupt transition, but it is generally less stress than the alternatives because the are going from fouled water in the bag to clean water in the tank in as short of time as possible results in the greatest benefit for the health of the fish.
I’ve heard about people doing that. Do you pour in water and all or net the fish out.
-
Receiving fish from another area of the county. The fish are Apistos shipped in breather bags. I can’t float the bag, but there are ways around that. Big concern is not shocking an already stressed fish.
-
I’m wondering what the best way to transition fish from a high ph (7.8 +) to a lower ph (7.2). I would think acclimating the other way would be easier using R.O. water.

I hate it when I make those kinda mistakes. I enjoy your post, would hate to lose you since you you “came clean” and want to fix it.

Things to think about:
- how much room do you have?
- How much budget?
- what plant interest you
A smaller tank makes lighting it easier, but limits the number and size of plants. A larger deeper tank like means you need to invest in better lighting.
another thought: What about adding plants to your current tank. You get some exposure minimum cost.

it’s like superglue without the mess. UV light hardens it almost instantly.
