It's so true! I've only ever had my current one, but he's hilarious. I like it when he goes exploring into a tight spot, then just slowly swims backwards to get out. Something cool to look for is the way they'll flatten their top fin down when approaching the surface of the water, and tuck their dangly fins upward when near the bottom. Mine has recently developed the personality of a chompy little dog - biting my finger when available. (I usually wear disposable gloves, so he gets no reaction from me besides "nanner nanner.") Dude also delights in sucking snails off the glass and immediately spitting them out hard, in rapid succession. He's a riot.

@OnlyGenusCaps, this would probably be worth talking to an admin about. Maybe one of them could get an official new definition onto Urban Dictionary - or some similar site. It does need to be available to find.

This led me to googling "nerm." Oh my. I had no idea.

Bah, for whatever reason it looks like when I used pictures to this forum it doesn't like it if I used my left hand to snap the photo,
I haven't even succeeded with uploading one upside-down yet. You're way ahead of me.

I'm so happy for you! You absolutely hit the jackpot!

The new one should be fine regarding cycling - since you're moving your bacteria from the 29 into it.
But I sure wouldn't put any fish in the new one until it's been full of water, without leaking, for a minimum of 24 hours. The longer the better. Ya never know.

Pretty tank.

I love that he looks like a happy rabbit!
What are the tiny "whiskers" in front of his eyes?

Lacking experience here, but it sounds like you'd definitely enjoy a severum, and you're not certain you'd enjoy any other specific type of fish. Yeah? If so, I guess a severum would be your safest bet for having a fish you really enjoy.

@CT_I have a ton of excess syringes from a kid who eats via tube. I easily could try that!

@FrankThanks for checking for me. I guess I'll ask Candi if she knows anything about it - just to be safe.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. I seem to remember stories, from the beginning of Covid, where dorm residents had to either rapidly evacuate the buildings, or had calmly left but then weren't allowed back in for a long time. A situation like that could be gut-wrenching regarding the betta. Do take into account that something unusual like that could happen.
That said, not being allowed to have a fish in my dorm was the final straw that had me hunting down an apartment. I could not handle the dorm without a pet. My college wouldn't allow first-year students to not live on campus, so I actually went to a psychologist to get a letter written, giving me permission to live off campus for my mental health. It's kinda hilarious - but not funny at all. If you need your buddy, you need your buddy! Legit.

I wonder if some re-thinking of the plants could be done so the fry wouldn't be *as* able to hide. Or maybe there's a more predatory fish, similar to a betta, that you would enjoy every bit as much. Or perhaps 3 female bettas? I hear tale that can work.

What size is your light?
My 24" - 34", 32 watt light is barely warm to the touch.
Same: 24" - 34". 32 watt. Does your barely warm comment refer to when it's been at full brightness for hours?

I found that "vacumming" with a Liquid dropper like a very small turkey baster is an AMAZING tool.
I actually have a few tiny ones (previously used for human meds) that I could try. I hesitate to stick my hands in the tank for fear of what sorts of residue my skin might be transferring in, but.

Quick question. Is it normal for a Fluval 3.0 to get so hot that it hurts to hold your finger on the power button? (I just noticed this yesterday, after the light had been at full brightness all day. I don't know if it's happening when dimmer.)

@Lifeisgood If I understand you right, it's the same way you start a suction when also using the wide part of the siphon. Right?

Either Friday or Saturday, my partner and I are going to drive around to various Petco's, hunting for a 55 gallon with good seams and silicone. I'm very much afraid it's going to be a lot of work with no success, but because re-siliconing the current 55 would be SO hard, we think it's worth trying to find a new one first. Wish me luck!

I've considered doing the same in a 20. Just my brainstorming here, but I wonder if a male might be less capable of catching fry than a female, just because his longer fins might slow him down.

How do you get the suction started when not using the wide part on the end?

Easiest way to siphon (or otherwise remove) small piles of poo from the bottom of a 5 gallon?
What did you get done today?

Isn't it amazing how some other part of life can be a pain in the... back... but something cool with the tanks still brings joy? I love that about them. I found teeny bits of duckweed today that must've ridden in on other plants I recently bought. It felt as if a living thing appeared magically. Fish tanks are real-life sci-fi. 🙂
I hope your back improves soon.
