@beastie Yeah I was planning on 2 weeks currently. How long does it usually take to see whether or not something is wrong with the fish?

I have been finding a wide range of times online for quarantining new fish. Everything from 10 days to 2 months. Obviously, the longer you quarantine fish, the more confident you can be that they are okay to introduce to a tank; however, there comes a point when the length of time is just too inconvenient.
How long do you quarantine new fish for? What tips can you give for quarantining? -
@Ken Burke Sorry for the delay. School work had me busy LOL I am not really sure what pleco I will get, probably something small and cheap for my first pleco.

@nabokovfan87 @Pepere @mountaintoppufferkeeper So I have had the 4 scissortail rasboras in the tank for about 5 days now. I have been feeding every day, to encourage ammonia for the bacteria to grow.
I tested ammonia and nitrites today, and they are both at 0.
Should I add a couple more rasboras and maybe a bottom feeder?
Bioload just seems like it might not be challenging the bacteria currently.-

Picked up 4 Scissortail Rasboras (Rasbora trilineata). Just curious what ya'll are feeding them regularly and what treats, if any, do you use for enrichment?

@Guppysnail Ah okay, I saw club soda and read it had extra minerals in it that seltzer didn't have. Didn't know if the extra minerals would be bad or not.

@Ken Burke Looks like the seltzer water is going to be about as much as my plants cost, I am going to try the bleach and if that doesn't work, then I'll just buy more plants 🙂
I can see the reverse respiration being good for more expensive plants, or high quantity of plants though.

@Ken Burke @Guppysnail Scratch that, the walmart near me doesn't have seltzer water, and doesn't know when they are getting it in.
Do you think that the plants would be fine in the 5 gallon bucket over night until I can try another store tomorrow?

@Ken Burke Concerned mostly about snails and algae. Deciding on a salt dip or a bleach dip.

@tolstoy21 which would be safer for Amazon Swords, bleach or salt?

@tolstoy21 Yeah I saw the bleach dip. Also saw a peroxide dip followed by a saltwater dip. I was opting for the later since it seems a bit safer for the plants. The peroxide kills off algae and most parasites, while the salt kills of the rest of the parasites and snail eggs.

I did use a bottle of the Fritzyme 7. 🙂
I suppose I will pick up a few plants and maybe 4-6 nano fish.
How would you disinfect the plants, if you only have the one tank? -

I have been looking online, and have seen 2 main schools of thought on cycling a new tank:
1) Cycle from day one with plants in the tank, and low light.
2) Start the cycle with absolutely nothing living in the, and also no light until ammonia and nitrites are zero (usually 1-2 weeks). Then and a couple plants, use low light, and add a few fish once every 1-2 weeks depending on ammonia and nitrite levels.The second option seems to be the safer option and allows the bacteria to grow gradually with the load in the tank. Thoughts?

@Schuyler I have a Fluval FX4canister filter. I was going to try a second bank but wanted to fit the intake tube for the canister filter so I decided to try and island on the other side LOL
I will most likely fill in the gaps between the rock on the island with 'monte carlo' and the background with a combo of Val and amazon swords. The rest of the plants are undecided lol-

@Stef Yeah that rock was not playing along LOL
I plan to get 10lbs stone in the future to place around the tank as plants grow and I feel like plopping them in LOL
Also going to get some more ghost wood, but about half as thick, to fill out the "root structure" more.
Ended up only using 20lbs of sand though so now I have 60 lbs laying around LOL-

@nabokovfan87 The crevasse in the stone is a cave 🙂 I have actually made a few changes. Once I get it to a point that I am happy with it, I will send some update pics.

New fish quarantine time and tips

@Pepere Yeah I only have 7 scissortail rasboras in my 75 gallon, and a small 10 gallon quarantine tank (With my old betta currently living there). Trying to gauge how quickly or slowly to stock the tank. 🙂
Want to get a bottom feeder or two in the tank soon, so they can clean up leftover food, etc.
