  1. Same. I prefer my 407s for customization of media and the ability to put what I need in there. My purigen, polyfil and crushed coral (along with more traditional media) are all in the 407. I’d be hard pressed to run all the same media in a HOB. I actually run all kinds of different filters and each serve a purpose. - 55g (“overstocked”/mod-heavily planted) Fluval 407 - 29g (grow out, minimal plants atm) Aquaclear 20 - 20L (two killifish, a few plants) Med ACO sponge filter - 6g cube (CPD, heavily planted paludarium) nano ACO sponge + submersible pump for flow 3g hospital tank - it came with an overflow +submersible pump. I yanked the standard charcoal box filter and added biomedia, sponge and polyfil 3.5g aquaponics system x2 - that’s it’s own bizarre filtration. my point is - you can experiment, “trick out” and change what you are using. There isn’t any one right answer for a certain size aquarium. honestly, the right filter is one that you understand how to use well enough to maintain excellent water parameters for your little glass nature box.
  2. We live in a chloramine using district. I let the tank metabolize it and selected Prime as my water conditioner since it claims to neutralize it. We happen to have one filter on the fridge that can remove and the tap water tests negative immediately after going through the fridge. We’ve tried all kinds of under sink filters and none of them worked. So just fell back to letting the tank metabolize it.
  3. Love these! There on our list for the next tank!
  4. We got ours at warp speed. The tank looks so good!
  5. Beautiful fish! I’m not great at identifying every common species yet - what is he?
  6. My husband and I were just saying this. Glad they are selling well for them. Tell the warehouse employees thank you for us!
  7. Looking at bringing in Turkana Jewel Cichlids. I’m trying to determine if they can be a community fish or not. Google has every answer under the sun, so I’m looking for real world experience. I would love to add them to my showpiece tank in the main part of our house but that tank requires they have roommates (and get along with said room mates). That tank houses rainbow fish, electric blue acara, mollies, swordtails, opaline gourami and snails. Would these cichlids get along with roommates? Or will they beat up everyone and make them all miserable?
  8. I keep: Aquarium salt, Maracyn, Maracyn 2, kanaplex, paracleanse, expel-p & Ich X in my cabinet. Everytime I’ve let something run out, that’s when I need it.
  9. What are your water parameters and your fishes’ health? If both those are spot on, I’d say the sponge filter is working great for you. Stay the course. If you find a great deal on a canister filter and want to try it, give it a go. I personally have canister filters, HOBs, sponge filters and aquaponic submersible pumps with pre-filters in my aquariums, give or take which tank and for what species. All have their pros and cons. I agree with being able to find exact opposite opinions on everything. Go with the filter that you operate well, that takes care of your fish. If that’s a sponge filter, so be it - if that’s a canister - so be it.
  10. From my all of one “clutch” that I have had (so it could be just luck) - they don’t seem to forget that their babies are their babies. Mine did not predate on the babies and they stayed in close quarters for months. I let the parents stay for about 3 months and they left their babies be the whole time. It was quite impressive parenting instincts this species seems to have.
  11. So, so true. I have a few of @Fish Folk ‘s beautiful acaras. They bred within just a few days of landing with me…I’m trying to get said water puppies to a good size to rehome but there are so many and they have a great survival rate 😂. I honestly thought they would eat their first batch of eggs.
  12. Any idea which is which of these electric blue acara? I have a breeding pair so if I can ID one, then I can ID the other (fish 2 is ridiculously shy and hard to photograph).
  13. Any experience or thoughts on how far down one needs to take the water level to prevent jumping on a lidless tank? I would love house my clown killis in a rimless cube (they are breeding pretty well) but I just don’t trust them not to jump. It has a lowered water level (about 6 inches) but I just don’t think that will be enough.
  14. I’m with you. I’ve had this exact thing happen in my tank. I’ve done a round of Maracyn, Maracyn 2 & paracleanse and I’ve still got random deaths happening. It doesn’t make any sense.
  15. Which plants will thrive growing both emersed and immersed (so out of the top of the aquarium)? I would love to plant a few in my rimless tank…but I’m not sure which ones would have good support for height growing from the bottom of a tank to well beyond the water line.
  16. There’s one by me with a big, bold message on their receipt of “no guarantee.” Another is a week. It’s all over the map. I’ve resolved myself that it is money spent either way so that helps.
  17. Update - lost the rainbow shark and 3 more random fish. Right before it passed it developed the first outward sign of anything - a few red areas (beginning ulcers?). I had already been putting Maracyn for a few days with only maybe a touch of slowing to the deaths. So I switched strategies. Because of the speed of the deaths I assume either toxin (I’m doubting as there are 5 other various aquatic tanks in the house using the same water - including two African dwarf frogs that are not bothered) or bacteria. Maracyn wasn’t helping (gram positive) so I added Maracyn 2 for gram negative coverage. So far, this has helped. No deaths yesterday and no deaths so far today. I’m hoping with a full course of both, it will knock out whatever quick bacteria is wiping out the tank.
  18. Technically, yes. I bought a batch of new plants and a few went in every tank around the house about 3 weeks ago. Fish, no.
  19. Over the past week several fish have died in my main tank (I think we are up to 7). They have all been juvenile swordtails of the same spawn (born June 1st) except for one adult guppy. They all just show up dead one by one. No marks, no squabbling, no fungus, no sunken bellies, no growths, no wounds - nothing. The bodies look perfect. They are fine one minute and upside down when I get home from work. I haven’t been able to locate any stray current, the fish are all acting normal except the rainbow shark. It is acting listless and is hiding (very unlike him, he’s usually all over the tank). Appetite is all normal (except rainbow shark). Activity is normal. I have tested and retested the water, switched test kits and haven’t found anything off. I use this water in a 6g and 20g and those fish are fine. pH 7.2 ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate 20-30 (heavily planted tank and dosed to this level with easy green). Any ideas on anything else I can troubleshoot?
  20. I have hitchhiking bladder snails, ramshorns & trumpet snail. I’ve bought nertrite and mystery. there are like 5 species at my house. I honestly don’t get the extreme “pest” status. I don’t mind any of them and let them carry on. I quite enjoy watching the mystery snail.
  21. Ours always ate their molts - so fast too. We’d see, think oh “she molted” and turn around and she had scarfed it.
  22. They can get stuck all kinds of places. You have to weigh the pros and cons of the risks for each thing in your tank. It would be heavily protecting the fry - which might be worth the risk for you.
