@Chick-In-Of-TheSeait is Psuedomugil Luminatus Red Neon Blue Eye Rainbow Fish.
    They are super fun!

That is a mouthful @Kurt Brutting

Looks like they are a relative of furcatus - both are in Pseudomugil genus.  There is one LFS that is a little further than I usually go that has Pseudomugil Furcatus. I love them 😍, and the Luminatus too! They are on my fish wish list, but I'd want to have a longer/larger tank for them to enjoy first (I'm overstocked in the 29g currently).  What tank size do you have the Luminatus in? Their blue eyes.. ORD! 💙

I see a lot of bypass.

Ugh, yes.  I am struggling with bypass as well.  I will put a new floss pad, and it's great, then by day 3 it's bypassing.  (I keep the coarse & the ceramics in there always - just giving them a tank water rinse weekly).  What I've been doing is turning the floss pad counterclockwise each time (so the top of the floss pad would then be on the left), and that buys me another couple days.  @Bentley Pascoe mentioned bypass as part of the HOB filter sucks video, and I would agree. When you want to do a custom loadout, as most of us do, you welcome bypass.  Boooo...  I still want to try the bumpy sponge too though.  Perhaps I can get some more runtime out of that before bypass rears its ugly head; I just have to find the right porosity or whatnot so I can get some good, reliable flow through it.  For me, bypass is probably more annoying than for some folks, because I do keep a dropped waterline for the mystery snails and hence the splashy noise level ramps up.  It's either than or one of the air pumps walked itself into something and I can literally hear it through the wall. Can't win!  🤣

we do have a "side tank" intended to be there for only plants

"Only plants"... mm hmm... sure.  We will see about that!  😉

I imagine when it's over 2 months on the plant order and no progress I will just request a refund

Maybe this is a sign.  Probably getting fishes is faster than these plants.  Just sayin.

Also your sword plants are looking so epic.

Again trying to get Spike to eat is a struggle.

I'm very happy!  I dropped Repashy in today, and Spike went right over to it and began eating it!  Hooray!

I could not tell if he had any of the zucchini yesterday or not. I pulled out what was left at the end of the day.

Do they ever leave things for you?

No they haven’t but sometimes we can have a back and forth conversation. We always call pss pss pss followed by 3 tongue clicks. Whether it is my husband or me feeding, we always do that. And they will reply to us. Then we feed peanuts in the shell. Given the choice of peanuts, they always want the ones in the shell. They like puzzles, I think? They will eat bird seed if there are no peanuts, but aren’t really that crazy about it.

That’s really something how they follow your cars! I didn’t realize they do that.

I was skeptical about it when my husband told me, but hiccup crow has a very specific language. He started calling about 2.5 hrs into my shift (!!)

  5. Our “hiccup crow” that we feed in our backyard followed me 19 miles to work! Turn the volume up and you will see why he is hiccup crow. And he is soaking wet in the rain!

A few months ago another crow followed my husband to work, about the same distance.

  6. Given the CHOICE of Repashy & zucchini, Snoopy chooses zucchini.

(I had to resecure the plant weight. The first time she pulled the zucchini right out and took it halfway across the tank swimming backwards) 🤣😍

  7. Black discoloration on fish could be ammonia burn. Ammonia can occur when medicating, as some medications disrupt the nitrogen cycle. Do you regularly test for ammonia? Of the “big 3” (ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate) ammonia is the most toxic. If you test with strips, the ammonia test would be on its own separate strip; it is not part of the multi-test strips.

  8. I believe that pitting of the shell is generally caused by water that is too soft. Snails need pH of 7+ as well. Crayfish empire has good quality snail foods. You can get a bunch of free samples and just pay the shipping.

Also @BAT don’t you have a lot of snails that you had hatched out? I believe I remember @Guppysnail stating that when there are a bunch of snails in a tank the calcium depletes rather quickly, and so you may need to add a liquid calcium to the tank to keep up.

  9. Again trying to get Spike to eat is a struggle. He did eat a small flake or two, then for some reason ignored the rest. I tried some vibra bites again but no go. He will sift sand around food but not actually taste the food. I thought, maybe he needs really soft food?

I put a Snello pellet in there. A Snello pellet will expand and then fall apart into a little pile of dust. So, he cruised past it like 8 times, but kept stopping to look at it. Each time it would be a little fluffier. Then, he tasted it. And then he would do a lap around the tank and sift sand here and there. Then return and have another taste of the Snello. And again. Progress!!!  And then a tetra came to investigate and Spike defended the food and ran the tetra off. Awesome. That’s just what Snoopy would do. Also tonight I noticed he swam mid level in the tank a few times, which is nice. He’s becoming more comfortable.

He does accept white light more now but swims more dart-y and his breathing quickens when that is on.  So I only do that briefly to check coloration and health of the fish.

Spike (right) with green Snello dust pile (left). He’s now staying closer to it.

  10. The new ram has been named. He is Spike!

In the cartoon, Spike is one (of 3) brothers of Snoopy’s.

Here’s a little clip from I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown. Spike brings his BFF to visit Snoopy.

More than one person suggested Woodstock, but we already have a Woodstock!

  11. @Fish Folk It's been awhile, but this thread needs a well-deserved bump.  Also I wanted to add I found a nifty thingy (haven't tried it yet).  It's a 2 stage brine shrimp net and you use both nets at the same time.  The first (top) net catches egg shells but allows the shrimp to fall through.  The second net will hold the shrimps and then you can use the medicine syringe/airline hose dealio on the shrimps that are sitting in that net. Or what I do is turn the net inside out and lower it into a cup of tank water.

    image.png.ee53bff8d6a8a7f90e9db3f669e85a61.png

So you can harvest the hatch, and then when you are ready to dump out your hatchery, you can use the net system to organize the harvest and then transfer to your freezing trays.  Prevents some of the harvest from going down the drain (I only usually harvest at 48 and 72 hours, then I start to see die-off so I freeze the rest.)

  12. Check this out. I refer to this quite a bit.  https://www.aquariumcoop.com/blogs/aquarium/aquarium-salt-for-sick-fish

Do not use "marine" or "reef" salt, nor table salt (has anti-caking agents) - look for "aquarium salt".

This is the stuff if you're going with API brand.

    image.png.bdeb6881193a906b433cdbc1ebc5ba18.png

I like fritz better because it is smaller granules and dissolves better, but I used API for many years prior to finding Fritz.  You'll want to dilute the salt w/ tank water before adding to the tank.

    Welcome to the forum!

How are the embers surviving QT?

Doing very well!  Today was their first water change. They had paracleanse first dose and now a two week rest, with some carbon. They eat well and are coloring up, and they don’t seem to mind the white light anymore. I only use the light briefly once or twice a day to check symptoms (none so far!)  A bit dusty here from siphoning. I put some catappa tea in the water too; and a leaf.

Do you dilute it for cleaning larger things (ie: pond pump w/ 1/2" long (Python-type) hose?

i used to read lots of aquarium books. Some of them addressed breeding this fish, i believe some of them suggested that as a fry this is a photosensitive species. Maybe try limiting or cutting off light for your next batch?

I recall a member video by co op and they were saying that the fry are tricky to sustain because they are not going to eat commercial foods; you have to have infusoria available like all the time until they get big enough to eat the baby brine shrimps.
