mynameisnobody
Hey everybody, does anyone know what this stuff is? I’ve seen it growing for about a couple of weeks, but now it’s starting to creep me out. I’ve kept some serious tarantulas, yet whatever this is has me wanting to cut that piece of wood off and out. Any ideas?
Fish Folk
Well, the darker fuzzy stuff is beard algae. I'm not sure what those white-tipped things are. Watch to see if it grows across surfaces. See if there are vine-like runners.
Guppysnail
I have no clue what it is but I actually think it is pretty 🤣 @Biotope Biologist?
Biotope Biologist
I haven’t seen anything like that before kinda looks like that wood is coming back to life 1
Whitecloud09
Yeah that is weird! What kind of fish of those @Biotope Biologist? If I may ask?
mynameisnobody
@Biotope Biologist hahahaha so my spider wood is actually zombie wood. I initially thought it was just black beard algae, but now it’s takin on a cordyceps form. I’m going to leave it be and see what happens.

Or are you asking about the rainbowfish that want their picture taken desperately in the foreground of @mynameisnobody’s shots?
mynameisnobody
After some digging, it appears to be black pellia. I am definitely not set on this, but it’s the closest I’ve gotten to describing it. Apparently it’s a very rare occurrence which occurs with deeply tannic wood. One of the rare instances, I’m glad I didn’t boil the wood. Here’s a side photo but my photo skills are terrible. It seems like it’s beginsgroing white, but soon becomes very dark.

Gannon
The almost look like giant rhoicosphenia diatoms lol. Certainly not though.
mynameisnobody
And it grows, pretty quickly and is spreading throughout the same piece of wood. It looks like black coral. Just as a size reference, that’s a 4” rainbow and way in the background are 5” Denison barbs. First time, I wanted the fish to dive bomb the photo for size reference, but apparently they had an etiquette class earlier today.

They almost look like some form of polyp or coral. Do they react to being touched?
mynameisnobody
@Schuyler I found a spot online that described it. If I can find it again, I will attach it here.
Tony s
you know, it is kind of cool looking. you could let it grow out and see. unless its toxic
mynameisnobody
@Tony s agreed. It freaked me out at first, but curiosity has the best of me. I want to see how big it will get, it’s got plenty of room to grow, whatever it is. The fish and plants seem unphased by it.
