Chick-In-Of-TheSea
Today my quarantine gang has moved into paradise 🙂 They are enjoying a gentle sunrise there. I added black neons since my one lone wolf lost his buds to ick a few months ago. I also introduced a Bolivian ram which has an adorable personality. The usual gang are pristella tetras, a mystery snail named York (she's the "Big Apple"), and a zebra nerite snail named Hampshire. 29 gallons For plants we’ve got Java fern, Java moss, and micro sword. Chick-In-Of-TheSea
Hey guys! Today I’m setting up a new 10 gallon for baby snails! I am doing the grunt work… adding sand! Stay tuned for how I do it! @sweetpoison Edited June 16, 2022 by Chick-In-Of-TheSea
Chick-In-Of-TheSea
Materials. apple juice bottle with “handle” funnel pool filter sand Also- not pictured- a bucket I fill the bottle about this much, add tap water. Cap it. Invert the bottle a lot so sand filters through the water like an hour glass. Also I turn the bottle on its side and rotate it “rotisserie style” Do this like a million times. Here’s a photo after every rinse. Edited July 26, 2022 by Chick-In-Of-TheSea
Chick-In-Of-TheSea
Well I’m a dummy. I started with a cloudy bottle. It was scratched up from last sand project. So I pour into glass. I am not looking for absolute clarity. Just looking to see if the dust settles to bottom quickly. Oh! Important! Anyone who attempts this, don’t pour any water from this project into your drain! You guys know, but just sayin. (That’s what the bucket is for. I pour the bottle water out into the bucket, then take the bucket outside later to dump it.) I dechlorinated the aquarium water. Probably not necessary. Added sand to aquarium. Slowly immersed bottle. Let tank water flow in to put pressure on the sand. Slowly tipped out. But then wait? What about planting plants & stuff? No problem. Here’s a little test showing result. Edited June 15, 2022 by Chick-In-Of-TheSea

Chick-In-Of-TheSea
Now that I have nice clear water, I wrecked it by squishing an old pre filter sponge into it and adding a cruddy sponge filter. That should clear up quickly. Also added baby java fern and driftwood. The rock and the old sponge don’t stay. They are just there for now to weigh down the driftwood and provide bacteria. Added the light for the Java fern and dosed with Easy Green. More plants on the way. Edited June 16, 2022 by Chick-In-Of-TheSea

Chick-In-Of-TheSea
I changed water on the big tank today and all that water went into this tank. Also did filter maintenance and squeezed out all the media into this tank too. Ew! Haha Also the plants came today so I scaped it. I also got some bonus plants in my shipment! I’m told they might be salvia minima. 2

Chick-In-Of-TheSea
Thanks @TeeJay. I’m pretty much doing the same as you. Adding “juice” to get things started. Tank has a lot of detritus right now. I did clean the sponge filter in a ziplock full of tank water today (it was really clogged) but left all the other mulm in there. I added Fritz Zyme today also and ghost fed. The snails need to grow some more before they can move in because I can’t trust them with the gaps in the lid where the heater cord and tubing come through. I get a different headcount each day. 34,32,24,27. So I don’t know how many snails I actually have, but the next clutch is starting to show some activity, and I’m guessing there are about 80-100 expected from that one. TeeJay
Yes today is tank cleaning day after I get back from church with my girls. So I want to get more of the gunk that's no good sucked out of the tank. Found a turkey baster works wonders lol.

I use one daily to clean uneaten food out of my snail breeder box. It’s safer than an irrigation syringe because there are no moving parts, in case I do suck up a baby snail. I need to get a better one though. This one is from Dollar Tree and stuff wants to fall back out of it so I always have to put my finger on the end. I would like to get one of those no-drip turkey basters
