Makes sense.  What do you think ideal would be?  2 females, 3 males or 2 and 2?

I’m really not sure. I’ve only just barely dabbled with Lucania goodei. Somewhere I read that males can be a bit unfriendly towards each other. I’ve also read females sometimes each each other’s eggs.

Here’s two archived articles from American Currents (NANFA)

Interesting articles.  Neat to see there are recognized strains and color varieties from different areas.  Those red anal fin ones!  Wow!

I am rendering _no comments_ on the aquarium size / long-term suitability of this set up. But… oh my… this is what I’m saying: NANF are the equal in beauty for fish anywhere in the world. Stunning display here…

Lepomis megalotis. Longear Sunfish. Probably some color enhancement going on… but still a stunner!

Time for the "O" states. Again, broadly separated regions of the country, these natives are found in small creeks, pools, pond edges, etc. Great beauty is so often hidden right under our noses...

Ohio - Gilt Darter (Percina evades) 2.5-3.5 inches. Listed as Federally endangered in many locales.

Oklahoma - Blackstripe topminnow (Fundulus notatus) avg. 2.5 inches. Common in the aquarium hobby.

Oregon - Redside shiner (Richardsonius balteatus) avg. 2.5 inches. Note: Oregon regulations are very strict.

Oh maybe you can give me there info.

Reach out here. Old website, but serious dealer. Basically has gotten me everything I have ever dreamed of. I was able to catch natives with the proprietor in person last month in North Carolina. Very connected. Has forgotten more than I'll ever learn. Here's an example of some Gilt Darters he dropped me a pin for...

Wow. I stumbled across this thread and some day I will be able to get multiple tanks and I will have a NANF tank. This is absolutely phenomenal. I am so excited by the darters!

Darters are AWESOME! But you need to get that water cold. Aim for 60°-F. My dream species to keep and breed is the Tangerine Darter.

New goal! I will have to do a lot of research! Unfortunately it'll be a good few years before I can likely have a second tank. Are any of these species able to be kept in a community tank, or do they all do better being solo species in a tank? Any good resources to learn? (I'm sure there's a bunch earlier in the thread; I'll have to go back and read carefully).

Yes, Darters can be kept in a NANF community tank. I keep my Banded Darters in a 29 gal aquaponics setup with Rainbow Shiners, several Guppy / Endler hybrids, and _female_ Florida Flagfish. My temperature stays just under 70°-F with window air conditioner set at 65°-F.

I swap out plants sometimes. Since taking this, I’ve added Basil and Mint.
