Atitagain
These are some very interesting fish, the green is really popping! Using the powerhead in a 20G, do they need high circulation/ movement? To mimic streams and rivers? It looks like you have created plenty of resting spots using the bigger stones. The springtime way of going at it adds another level of curiosity. Interesting scape/ environment as well. The stacked rocks and dense group of moss/ plants really creates an amazing natural feel.

Honestly… I’m not sure about what works and what doesn’t yet! Yes, the powerhead is for flow and oxygen. The stones and wood are just kind of however they landed. What I need is black worms! But the last order I made came in half dead, so I’m still angry about that and refuse to order from that seller again.
Fish Folk
Found this nice article from a NANFA publication. Author describes spawning strategies for different darters. Banded Darters spawned successfully in sinking yarn mops, checked daily, that immitated vegetation. Rainbow Darters spawned in glass gravel trays where gravel was sloped from one side to another, alternated each day as eggs were found. In both cases, it seems single pairs produced the spawn in an otherwise empty tank.
Fish Folk
I’ve put together two “sinking” mops to toss in the Banded Darter tank. I’ll try one in front of the Hardscape pile, and one behind… Edited April 19, 2022 by Fish Folk

WhitecloudDynasty
Whenever the candy cane darter come off the endangered list, they'll be first on my list. Until then I'll wait and hope they made a good come back. 2

Johannes
I live in europe more specifically scandinavia and i adore darters and am jealous of everyone who can keep them in the us but yesterday i discovered some darter looking fish, does anyone here know what they are. Pitcures below couldnt get the best pitcures but they have a slight red talfin when viewed from the side and the rest of the body is silver with black spots. 1
Fish Folk
@Johannes assuming you collected these in Scandinavia, could they be juvenile Perca fluviatis? (Eurasian perch)
Johannes
It could be but being that i live in the west of the country and that these fish only live in the east of the country, and the only fish I have seen in this area are trout. In conclusion I will have to wait and see what these grow out to be. Well this turned out into a mixed ramble🤪
Johannes
I think i may have found the fish species it could be phoxinus phoxinus aka european common minnow wich is basically the european cousin of rainbow shiners. These fish where released in the 1950-1980 period. 4
Fish Folk
@Johannes That certainly seems like a very good possibility! The adult males of that species color up dramatically in spawning season. Here are a few photos I found of Phoxinus phoxinus with that similar vertical barring that appears on the sides of yours... In addition, a number of uploads by naturalists and hobbyists combined can be found here on fishbase. Photos from the Phoxinus Genus have been uploaded here on iNaturalist as well. Again, those males in breeding colors are absolutely stunning...

CornAndCrawlers
Johannes, beautiful native fish you caught! Fish Folk, that banded darter is stunning. Will it eat all those blood worms by itself? I'm still trying to figure out these guys eating habits.

They’re a bit shy for me.
Fish Folk
Tonight, I decided to bet out and have a good look at my Banded Darters. Here they are… I put them back immediately afterwards. NOW PLEASE SPAWN!!! 💚
CornAndCrawlers
What's the personality on your banded darters? I've noticed the rainbow darters come to the front of the glass and stare at me when I come down, but this fantail darter runs away and hides, took me forever to get these two fuzzy photos of him. Are banded darters shy or curious?
Fish Folk
@CornAndCrawlers I like your photos! My Banded Darters are fairly shy. But so are my Rainbows. I took this photo of a couple Rainbows earlier today. It's dark in their tank because my secondary LED went out. I'll have a new one in tomorrow.

I've been checking just about every day. I added a bunch of Oak leaves in the banded darter tank. They really seem to like those. Males are very colored up. I also have been corresponding with a NANFA breeder who has documented his breeding processes with Banded Darters before. But nothing yet. Rainbow Darters spawn in gravel. I haven't focussed on breeding them yet.
