Vaibhav Pandey
I have been racking my brain but can't think of a nano fish i.e. a fish that can live and be bred under 10 gallons and shows parental care in a planted tank Like angelfish and rams fan their young, feed them slime coat move the eggs So I decided to open this question to the community. What do you think? Btw, searching the web didn't help Edited July 18, 2021 by Vaibhav Pandey I stupidly forot to add "in a planted tank"constraint

Bobbie
I’ve heard that it’s possible to breed apistogrammas in a 10g, but they can’t stay at that tank size forever

RogueAquarium
So....Not a fish, but Neo-Cardinia shrimp mothers are pretty parental towards their shrimplets even for a little while after they detach from her tail. I've always found that endearing, cute, and fun to watch.

Its fully my mistake that I forgot to include an essential constraint.............fish that show parental care and can live and breed in less 10 gallon planted tank Sorry for ther error on my part
Vaibhav Pandey
So the final constraints are 1)full life under 10-12 gallons 2) compatible with aquarium- plants 3) should show parental care.i e. Fanning/moving the eggs, feeding slime coat somewhat like rams and angels... Been into the hobby for 2 yrs now but boy have I not been able to figure it out

Epiphyte plants on big pieces of wood and stone should work.

DSH OUTDOORS
You could layer the substrate for stem plants. Start with your preferred soil, cover with pea rock or larger gravel then cover with sand. They will only be able to dig as deep as the pea rock. I would try Val or Java Fern in the harder higher PH water you would need for Shellies.

Pennywort can be a game changer if used correctly
Vaibhav Pandey
updates for new people We are trying to determine what nanofish show parental care and can be kept in a planted, small(under 10 gallons)for their whole life. Untill now we have narrowed it down to shell dwellers i.e. multies, with epiphytes on rocks And tying stem plants on rocks, or having floating stems in the tank. Can we think of any more species of fish who do this? Maybe any zoologists on the fourm can take interest....

I had had multiple generations come and go in a 8 gallon aquarium. They are very hardy, but eat only live foods.
TheNanoAquariumGuy
Would a pair of pygmy sparkling gouramis work? I think I have seen some videos on those on small tanks and making Bubble nest and taking care of their babies for a while. Lots of personality and easier to feed (and obtain) than pygmy sunfish.
Vaibhav Pandey
Well then, I Guess we have reached a conclusion! the fish that can spend their whole lives in under 10 gallons, planted and show parental care are 1)shellies (small lake tanganikan chilids) 2)pygmy sunfish 3)sparkling gourami nature is beautiful and anything is possible. Thank you everyone!!!
