Hobbit
Bummer about the shrimp! It’s tough—sometimes they just don’t do well. I’ve never gotten a shrimp colony going from the shrimp at my LFS. I had a nice little colony in my 55g when I first set it up as a dirted tank, before all its problems, but I can’t remember where I got those shrimp. I haven’t had success since then. I wonder if most of the hardness in my tanks is coming from magnesium and not calcium—perhaps that’s part of the problem. Oh, random thought—if a shrimp momma passes away before her babies are ready, can you put them in an egg tumbler and get them to hatch? 🤔
Streetwise
@Hobbit, I read a recent random Reddit post where someone saved shrimp eggs postmortem.

But I did go ahead and buy some more Bloody Marys, this time from a different seller. Hopefully these guys will do better! I'll update this thread when they arrive.
Torrey
I'm so sorry for your loss, it's really frustrating. My colony had been solid, up until I got sick with covid in March 2020. I wasn't able to do the weekly small water changes, and I am pretty sure the hornwort outcompeted the shrimp for calcium. I'm waiting for my health to stabilize before I try again.

H.K.Luterman
It's official! the 20 long is no longer an invertebrate only tank: we now have backbones! Added this morning are a trio of gold cobra endler/guppy hybrids! (the lights are currently off to let them settle in) And a new batch of bloody mary neos are drip acclimating. 5

FrozenFins
Those are gourgoues @H.K.Luterman. I need to stop looking at this forum so often. H.K.Luterman
Finally got an Inkbird on this tank! I also upped the air just to get a better temperature consistency from water flow, so I'm sure more green tribbles will be growing soon. Took this pic the other night before stealing some val to put into another tank. This is how it looks now. I noticed the endler/guppies (endlies?) like to hang out in the open spots, so I cleared a bit in the front. Also gives the mystery snails a path. I love how the val grew around the driftwood here. And I thought the way this mystery snail was napping was cute, with its feelers all spiraled. It was rudely awoken by that ramshorn a few moments later.

H.K.Luterman
An update! BABIES. So many babies and even more on the way. The two boys from the first batch are reaching maturity and gaining their colors, and so are also being just as pesky as the adult male. Their colors aren't the same as the adult, but maybe it just takes time for them to develop. Anyways, I took some video of the poor heavily pregnant females being harassed. The tank is doing well. I see a shrimp now and then but they haven't started breeding. Edited April 3, 2022 by H.K.Luterman
